Encryption backdoors have nothing to do with The Left. They’re the kind of thing that the elite oligarchs want, just like age verification. They push both sides to pass them
This is interesting. In the U.S., I think both sides tend toward such authoritarian intrusion. I'm not convinced it's the elite oligarchs alone pushing this. Let me share a theory I got from someone else. His theory was a major underlying motive for the progressive authoritarian power of various entities is...convenience.
Yeah, convenience. Not some sinister, Machiavellian motive. Simple convenience. Most people for most of their adult lives have jobs with responsibilities which are at times burdensome to carry out. The more power you have, the more effectively, efficiently and easily you can get your work done.
So, hypothetically if you're a police detective and get easy access on-demand wire tapping that requires no warrant and answerable to no one for probable cause, and this extends to both phone, e-mail and texting, and you can use A.I. to scan people's e-mail at your discretion, etc., that could help you do your job. Which may include busting child porn and human trafficking rings, stopping large quantities of illegal drugs from entering the country, etc.
If you have those capabilities and work in Homeland Security, it might tip you off about an upcoming terrorist attack (and more of us would rather avoid a Sept. 11th attack repeat).
Now throw in some 'crusader' types with causes, and the mindset that we've '
got to do something about this.' That's the hook to justify whatever they do. This works for either side in the U.S., and I suspect Canada also? Think about what 'this' might be to people. Some examples from American politics:
1.) Child porn and human trafficking.
2.) Reducing gun violence.
3.) Determining if inter-office electronic communications support covert activities harmful to society (e.g.: is a Meta social media platform increasing depression and self-harm in teen girls), or discriminatory actions targeting special interest groups (e.g.: maybe anti-conservative sentiment on liberal campuses, or 'hate speech,' etc.).
4.) Identify women ordering abortion pills from legal states into illegal ones.
5.) Drug smuggling.
6.) Tracking down illegal immigrants.
7.) Oh, great day, how did I forget this one...National Security!
Hopefully my mix includes items that would entice the Left, Right and both.
I don't dispute that there are companies who monetize personal data and would like to have more of it. I'm just saying a lot more is driving this push for a surveillance state than that. I agree at least in the U.S. it's 'bi-partisan.'
Now here's the hard question. Some of those agendas make some sense. How much surveillance state are we willing to put up with to, oh, say, cut child porn by 30%, intercept a couple of big narcotics imports, etc.? Because George Orwell's novel 1984 was a warning!
