My prediction is they'll keep it until they make the case thinner than the connectors. Think Lightning port on iPhone and USB-C on MacBook. However, when the time comes they most certainly won't care about pissed off customers. They care more about making things thinner.
I don't know about that. If the watch became thinner than could accommodate the current watch connector the Digital Crown would be far too small. These Apple Watch bands will be around for awhile.

the watch is double the thickness of the groove the band slips into, it seems they have ways to go before it's an issue

True about the leather bands as they can only last so long and will eventually need to be replaced, but the steel bands have better longevity.

Maybe the SS band will look good but I have mush less faith in the Space Black looking good for a couple of years.

Does not matter to me as I will likely replace my leather loop as it shows wear. SO far it still looks like new

If you own many bands and swap them regularly, then none will wear that fast. That is when band ownership can become a significant throw-away expense. If you own one or two bands, then they will probably look a bit worn after a couple years and be ready to go with the old watch.

I decided to hold off buying any more bands, as much as I like the idea, because I really do not want to throw that much money down the drain.

I think they can shave off quite a bit before it's considered too small to be useable.
Nah, it's an appropriate size the way it is. With my regular watches, small crowns are a pain, and I'm glad that I don't have to use them very often. Apple's is just big enough to scroll easily and allow a nice button press.

I'm looking to splurge on the Link bracelet and would love a definitive answer from Apple on this. Annoying if the mechanisms change late next year...

In the watch world the apple watch would barely be considered a medium size watch

I hope apple doesn't think "thinner is better" for this device, but as long as Jony Ive is around he's going to want it paper thin

They'll have to keep at least 3 parameters exactly the same: width of the channel and the curvatures of the ends in horizontal and vertical directions (aside from the channel profile, of course). This would pretty much limit the iWatch v.2 case to the same boring used bar of soap shape.

That's a good point. I'd think if they keep the same 38mm and 42mm sizes, they can still fit but perhaps not optimically. Much like the new smartcover on the older iPad.

Anyway, as I said in a very similar thread just a day or two ago:

I doubt [the Apple Watch's form factor] will change.

(A) There is no technical reason to change. No charging circuit, no data throughput, no other standard with which to maintain compatibility.

(B) Jony and Marc have already talked about how much they enjoy their traditional watches. Sure, they took the opportunity to change the worst aspect of regular watches — changing bands — but they also understand the permanence of quality timepieces.

I don't even expect the Watch to see a major update for quite a while. Apple's risk here is in sticking with the same form factor for longer than people are accustomed to seeing. We — that is, everyone on the planet outside of the Ive-Cook inner circle — won't know Apple's plans until the next upgrade announcement. I wouldn't get myself worked up about something that nobody knows.

I'm just looking for general opinion and guesswork.

The current Watch will no doubt be around until next September before its replaced in my opinion so an extra couple of bands just now isn't an issue.

I'd just really rather if I'm going to spend the money then they can be used on a future model. There's no way I'll be just surviving with 1 black sports band until a new Watch is released.

I seriously doubt they would change how the band channel and adapter works. I also would be surprised if the watch will get any thinner right now. If you look at the side with the crown and buttons on it, there's not much room to downsize the crown which making it's diameter smaller would make it more difficult for people to use IMO. Can't see them redesigning or eliminating the crown either. So if that side view doesn't change, then why change the band mechanism. My guess would be possibly some upgraded components unique to the new watch version but sure all those could fit inside the current case. I'm also not seeing major complaints from users or potential users that the watch is too big or thick, especially given the sizes of the competition.

I have a good collection of bands so far, 2 Apple ones and the rest bought and put on adapters. So I don't have any worries.

The digital crown was implemented as an obvious solution to the fingers blocking the small screen. A potential solution to re-designing the crown to accommodate the thinner case is to incorporate a touchscreen scrolling tick in the currently non-responsive strip of space on the far side of the Watch screen and have a smaller crown function as just a button. On the other hand, they may want to make the screen edge-to-edge and get rid of the black border. I don't know. Just throwing ideas out there.

On a related topic, they can easily ditch the iconic home button on the iPhone once they make the entire screen TouchID-capable, while incorporating Force Touch.

I think they will be interchangeable with the next gen but no further. iPhones too have the same upgrade cycle with the S versions. Mostly it goes something like this: Apple comes up with something new > everybody gets mad because they can't use older cables and stuff any longer > people accept that it's better this way > everybody calms down again. They did this with Flash, with CD players, with the newer Lightning cables and they too will do it with future bands for the Apple Watch. It's a company and a company wants to make profit. If they can sell more of any type of product just by slightly changing the next version they will. They'd be stupid if they wouldn't.

Hopefully the space black would hold up better than even regular SS since that is the point of it having the coating, durability. Who knows though, time will tell. :)
