I think John Lewis UK sold most of the apple watches!

extra 2nd year gaurantee free and a super discount before Christmas I think they totally sold out.

Apple did not discount the watch. Some retailers did. Apple's prices are still the same as day one. It's leading the industry
You can't seriously think this sale was not sponsored by the manufacturer. When the xbox was sold for $350 or the PS4 for $300, there's MS and Sony behind the move.

In this case, the $100 is definitely not on the retailers.

I tend to agree. I'm used to Steve Jobs standing up in front of a huge audience during a keynote address boasting about how many millions of iPhones they sold. It would warm the cockles of my heart if Cook stands up during the March keynote with a similar announcement for the first year of Watch sales, and stats about dusting the rest of the industry, just before he announces the Watch 2, and the continuation of select 1st Gen Watch models at a lower price.

But the secrecy is damning. By all indications, the Watch has been very successful -- far more successful than all of the competition put together it would appear. So hopefully, they're just waiting for a full year of sales to knock everyone's socks off.

I think it's crazy to give detailed sales figures if you dont have to. Especially for new products. Especially when there is a chance that new entrants can take the information and scupper your long term sales. If Apple were a private company you'd hear next to nothing. The only reason you hear anything is because it's a public company.

If samsung new their exact sales and the price breakdown they could change their production costs and take advantage. They would also know how much they should be producing, thus reducing costs. There is so much information you can gain especially from a fledgling business like this. No way would I want anyone to know. Even if the figures were amazing. Too early.

Right, but how often do you see retailers offering $100 (~25%) off a brand new Apple product? Never in my memory.
Brand new? The watch was 8 months old at Christmas! I've seen lots more Apple watches than Android Wear units so it is selling well. While I do have one and it's not a must have like the phone, it is an awesome accessory. IMHO it's $100 too expensive from Apple though. The $100 sales at BB/Target/Wherever are more in line with the value.

I really want to know how many get returned after purchase.

Why would that matter, and why would how many sold matter?

The only thing people care about after buying something is that it sells well enough to be supported. The only other watch that has that distinction is the Pebble. All the other watches are wasted money as the manufacturer stops supporting them about 3 months after they go on sale, and there's no software for them.

The Apple Watch is a huge success among watches, and it's a fact. And that's all that matters to a watch owner.

Based on a calendar, yes. But from a practical perspective many of us who preordered in the first moments of availability didn't receive our AW until a month later. Those who ordered hours after preorders began waited even two months. It wasn't until August they were even available in B&M Apple Stores and BB, and October for Target.

So while the watch may have existed for 8 months when $100 was lopped off, from an actual availability standpoint, the AW was less than half of that old. It was a quite stunning price drop for a new, no where near being EOLed, Apple product. The only question is was the discount baked into Apple's pricing from the start or was is by desperation. That point is unknown.

Because a product's return rate is a measure of its future success. Normal return rate avg on electronics is 15%.

The nonsense about return rates compared to other products is just silly. The AW is as much a fashion product as a technology product. I returned the first one I got because I decided I wanted the SS vs. the Sport. So if I was your case study, I'd be showing a 50% return rate when I love the AW. There is no dispute that the AW has outsold all its competitors combined, much like the initial iPhone came in the first year and kind of established legitimacy to a market that had been floundering with only techies for many years.

Now to my comment about the news... I think its kind of interesting that if you look at Apple's "other" category, if spun off it would be a greater than $10B company.

I was part of those statistics. I got my Apple Watch from Best Buy with the $100 off. I don't think the Apple Watch is quite where it needs to be for the price, and believe the next version will be a major improvement... but the $100 off made it worth it to me.

Curious to hear from previous Apple TV users as to why they bought the new one? For my uses there's nothing different. I literally spent $150 so I could have the HGTV and Food Network Apps haha.

Retailers heavily discount every single Samsung product ever made and usually within weeks of selling. They even offer buy one get one free. It doesn't tell you much.

Apple is not Samsung. Apple has traditionally never discounted products. Only 10% at Christmas.

The original iPhone dropped by 25% after only 3 months. Took 2+ years to sell as many phones as the watch did in 8 months. It means nothing - especially when the profit margin on the Apple Watch was 400%.

You "think" it has done very badly? lol

The original iPhone. It went down only because people were outraged and it was not subsidized like all other phones at the time. Apple phones are not subsidized that much (discounted). When phones are discounted (like T-Mobile $100 off at Christmas), they make up for it in service fees. Watches don't have the luxury.

Estimated by analysts to have sold 12mm Apple Watches since April and several billion in profits to Apple. Took the IPhone two years to sell that many iPhones and it was blasted as a flop and failure by everyone. Way too soon to write off the Apple Watch.

Well, that was the original phone. Now everyone and their mother uses Apple products. So you'd expect better sales with as many phones and Apple products used.

Doesn't really matter to correct him. He only likes posts that are negative towards Apple products. Go check the other Apple reporting news item here. He likes every single post that bashed Apple. He even likes the posts that mock people who buy the Apple Watch. he has a long history of bashing Apple and likes any post that is negative towards Apple.

And some people like to be positive about all Apple news. Let him mock people who buy the watch.F Fine. Some people like it some don't, and some stop using it.

And yet, you couldn't stop Apple from boasting about their sales figures when the iPhone launched. A much riskier proposition for the company than the watch. And yet somehow with all that information out there for their competitors, the iPhone went on to become an unrivaled success. It's amazing how nothing you've stated applied to the iPhone, yet it's vital to the success of the watch?

apple seems to me a company that likes to gloat about it's sales numbers. That's what the first half of all keynotes seem to be about, no?

It is noteworthy that it is not overly difficult for Apple Watch to see record quarterly sales at this point in time.

To say that the Apple Watch set record quarterly sales means precisely nothing.

There were no sales a year ago. It's hardly surprising that their best sales would be at Christmas. We also know that the watch was hugely discounted, an unprecedented move from Apple. We have also had no sales figures from Tim Cook since the watch was launched in April 2015.

All this suggests that the iWatch has been disappointing at a minimum. I think it has done very badly, and that its future is bleak. Goodwill to all who have bought it, but the Apple Watch is a mistake.
1/0 = "Fantastic Growth!!!", even better is 6.5M/0!

:D

I know that we disagree on the merits of the :apple: Watch, but math is hard to disagree on. BTW, 6.5M is a made up number by me. I am being optimistic.

I am not a fan, whatsoever, of the new Apply TV remote. Scrolling and selecting is very difficult at times. Will there ever be support to use our iPhones to control our Apple TV??

I'd rather the Swatch Sistem51 than the Apple Watch. The Swatch will last a decade while the Apple Watch will be in a landfill by year six.
IMO these aren't even comparable products.
[doublepost=1453939659][/doublepost]
Please do. This is my year to upgrade to the iPhone 7, and anyone holding off for whatever reason increases the chances that I can get my new phone on day 1.
This logic only applies to those on the same carrier as you, and even then it's questionable. We ordered our phones with Tmobile three days after launch and they were FedEx to our door for launch day arrival. Gone are the days of huge shortages.
