They were criticized for having a clunky interface (Android Wear is plainly crap), being mostly geeky and butt ugly and big as houses. Search the threads. I never saw anyone criticized their battery time (except maybe for the Moto360 which originally had a bad battery time). You're memory is selective.

POST 15
"1 day battery life, are they freaking serious? This is not a smart phone; it is a watch, and I don't want to be plugging it in every 24 hrs!

Massive fail, as usual wait for the real McCoy from Apple. This is a prime example of why Samsung copy, their original ideas suck!"

POST 18
"Fail on so many levels... 300 and yet another device you have to charge EVERY day? No thanks!!"

POST 32
"One day battery life? No thanks.

I won't get something like this until we are talking 2~4 weeks battery life."

POST 37
"A watch thats got "up to one day of battery life"?! What a joke..."

POST 38
"Trust Samsung to rush out another half-baked product just because they think that's what Apple is doing whilst putting no thought or effort into design or functional. Laggy and basically no battery life?"

POST 43
"Too pricey, bulky, laggy and crap battery life... total concept fail."

POST 45
"Seriously, this is why we don't have a smart watch/wearables device from Apple yet. They would never release one that got a day (or less) battery life"

POST 59
"1 week battery life would be ideal at this point, but 1 day is just pathetic.

Would Samsung really sell such a product to their own friends and family, and feel good about it?"

POST 70
"I thought it looked pretty sweet, until I saw the 1 day of battery and price"

there were 32 pages, so i guess you selectively missed them although the last post is telling of what people thought and what they would say when Apple came in more expensive and with the same battery life

"Of course you know what the responses to those will be after the release. We've already heard them..

1. The Apple watch is a fashion statement. It's a luxury watch. People pay premiums for fashion. $350 is not expensive.... etc

2. What's the big deal? I charge my phone every night. Non-issue.

3. Apple's solution is elegant. Once you've used it - you can't imagine how you have lived without it.

...and so on.."

Again, i have no gripe i just think Apple have rushed this to satisfy shareholders, and it would be be bad form but i think they will release a better version later on in Q4, this is what i was trying to point out

What good are more features if the watch battery won't support you using them all day?

Exactly how many days you had thoroughly tested the Apple watch ?
Lol, you are so focused on bashing Apple you didn't realize you are speaking about something that doesn't even exist yet.

----------

Aside from the size, I'm not seeing any similarities. I mean, they're both smart phones... but, duh.

True, and the biggest difference is ..... sales numbers :D

I hope the Apple Watch 2 will have a movement charging battery... And why not solar too ?

How much of a charge do you really think you're going to get from any mechanism tiny enough to fit in that watch and charge based on motion? And solar? Again, how much charge are you going to get from tiny panels that fit on it? I've got solar lights outside that see direct sun for hours and barely pull in enough charge to light a 4-watt LED for six hours.

Solar charging works fine on regular watches. I have no idea how much benefit it would be to a smart watch.

How much do you use your current watch daily? Personally, I glance at my watch for about 2 seconds maybe 100 times a day. That's literally 3.33 miutes of use a day. Lets throw in Ntofications. Assuming we glance at half but don't respond (emails or reminders which takes about 5 seconds. That's under 5 minutes of usage. Lets say the other 50 are messages and we respond...about 15 seconds? That's well under 25 minutes of usage. All in all, that comes to about 25 minutes of usage a day. Triple or quadruple that amount for the people sho think they are important, and you still got under 2 hours of ussage...for a watch that can handle 5 hours of heavy usage.

Apple never inteded for anyone to sit and stare at the damn thing every second of every hour. It's designed for quick momentary interactions rather than extended experiences like a smartphone or and ipad. notification>response. bam. done. not like how you interact with a smartphone or other mobile device.

Your attemp to spin this as anything but that just makes you seem dramatic.

Well said! It baffles me how people who use a traditional watch that only tell time on their wrists and have been living with that for years now all of a sudden want a watch to play with all day and complain about battery life. They have got to be kidding me!

Solar charging works fine on regular watches. I have no idea how much benefit it would be to a smart watch.

It could obviously add some charge, but nowhere near enough to power a miniature computer. I have a portable battery pack that can charge an iPhone and that can be charged by the sun. When my power went out last month, I was able to charge my phone with it after having charged it fully via an outlet. But letting it charge with sunlight for a whole day, it went up maybe 1 or 2 percent before running out.

This is a device that meant to be worn all day, so it's going to be a challenge to keep battery life up. You can charge any portable device in your car or sitting on a desk. On a wrist, even inductive charging doesn't work. My guess is there's plenty of R&D going into figuring this out. I would say the most likely path would be turning body heat into electricity since that could also work kind of like solar. But that's probably a loooong way away.

5 hours of direct use. Which means even if you stare at your wrist for 6 full minutes every time you interact with the watch, it will survive for 50 interactions.....
...
That's the thing: will the health and fitness watch app running in the background count as 'heavy use'.

...

How did you get from "mixed heavy use" to "direct use?" Wishful thinking?

"Mixed heavy use" gets you 5 hours. Regular use gets you a day max, according to the reports.

Some of the Android Wear devices claim more than double this battery life.

My question is, again, what does the iWatch offers that those AW devices don't and why should we expect it to sell better, or be more useful?

I actually don't even know if interested in the Apple Watch. I'm just curious now.
But regarding your post I can say that a little search about most vocal complainers here would show that they would have complained even if the battery life under heavy usage had been 10 hours. Trust me.

I'm waiting for feedback from someone that really used it for a week.

Yes, and a Nokia from 2000 could outlast an iPhone from 2014.

Apple Watch is a great smartwatch if you look at feature by feature comparisons. Like with iPhone, though, people take different elements from different competitors products and assume Apple has to beat all of them: no other company has this pressure.

Even if you argue that, say, the Moto 360 is better than Apple Watch, that's still the product of two companies' efforts.

To directly answer your question, however:

Apple's talent for ensuring their devices penetrate popular culture will be why the watch sells more than any Android wear competitor.

This, plus the fashion element. No one else has produced a watch that has made the fashion watch companies announce they're developing smart watches.

If smartwatches have value, people might need to own one to discover this value. If anyone can convince people to try a product its Apple.

Wow this is crazy! I can't believe those apple sheep completely flip flopped! I mean I know I know it's not the same people who said they were not ok with it who are saying they are ok with it, but apple users all share one brain so the opinion of one must be the opinion of all!

No wonder you don't understand it is not called the iWatch it's an Apple watch lol! What makes apple products sell is it's deliverance of beautiful and extremely elegant, easy to use software to the end user. Apple continues to do this over and over again, apple devices are easy to use, apple devices are beautiful to use, apple makes devices you want to use. Android devices does a whole lot of things but nothing I'd say exceptionally well. Apple devices might not do as many things compared to it's rivals but it does many things well. It's what makes people want to use iPhone and other apple products and keep them coming back for more.

Try to actually make a bit of sense when you speak.

Apple sheep or not, fashion victims or not, geek sheek or not Apple know how to market a product. This thing is gonna outsell the entire smart watch industry so far in its opening week or so - I wish I had more total failures like Apple do :) I do love this forum though , people get so precious and wound up about the tiniest first world problems.

this is just apples PR-language for: our watch doesnt last longer than other smartwatches.

*flies away*

I think that's a given. There will be long lines and short supply as usual. I don't know about long term success, but initially it will be demand, and you can bet the farm that it will sell out and be months before you can walk in the store and buy one. Apple has marketed this carefully as it is untested waters and they will do whatever is necessary to make it a success.

Mixed use? Ambiguous much? ;)

What does that really mean anyways?

Telling time vs checking notifications, etc.

SO TRUE ON SO MANY LEVELS. The amount of complainers on here is moronic. This is just the preface of all the threads that will pop up once the watch is released. If the battery life doesn't do it for you.. don't buy it. Plain and simple.

an apple watch that only tells time--apparently close to the truth. oh, it will also show notifications and read your pulse. and thats about it, no matter how magical thinking goes on here

And your point? It will tell time, display notifications and read your pulse. Those are facts, as you stated. No ones stating it will bring world peace or anything "magical". It's an iPhone companion device, not a personal computer. I think that's pretty clear.

Will you be tapping on your wrist for more than 5 hours each day?

He'll easy to spot... He will be the guy that takes 10 minutes to cross the crosswalk, because he's looking at his watch the whole way.
I half jest... Because it's getting crazy here days how much people walk around in public with their eyes glued to their phones... Adding watches to the mix ain't goi g to help :(

People have been hit by cars while glued to their phones walking around oblivious to their surroundings.
