However, the moment my health data, or any of my data, is shared with Google is the day I throw my Fitbit into the trash.

Careful, you’re going to start getting ads for exercise equipment and deodorant, because they’re going to see that you’ve become very sedate & stinky.

Google today announced it plans to release its own "Made by Google" wearables following its $2.1 billion acquisition of fitness tracker maker Fitbit. The deal is expected to close in 2020 pending regulatory approvals.Fitbit confirmed that it will continue to support both Android and iOS, and that Fitbit health data will not be used for Google ads.

I have no idea what to think about this . My Fitbit is a superb device but is directly involved in my health measurement. We have seen a lot of promises from Google after acquisitions that they would not change anything but broke it very often. Now that it involves my personal health data, I think I have to ditch my precious and beloved watch. Sorry Fitbit, I love(d) you to death but I won't let Google measure that 👻!

"...and that Fitbit health data will not be used for Google ads"

The fact they even have to announce that really shows how vast Google's data tracking is. Whether it's to be believed is a different story entirely.

I don't believe it, I just deleted my FitBit account.

Something else to end up in the Google graveyard...

Some good stuff in the hardware there... Nexus for one. And people moan about Apple stuff not getting any love!

I am no fan of Apple Watch because it doesn't even last 24 hours, which is pathetic. I like my Fitbit - it needs charging only after several days. However, the moment my health data, or any of my data, is shared with Google is the day I throw my Fitbit into the trash. Moreover I can just see it now - you tap your Fitbit for your pulse and it displays an ad. F*** you, Google. 🤬

Also, where is the Justice Department's antitrust investigation of this takeover?
The Fitbit doesn't do anything near the Apple Watch, so comparing battery lives is completely silly.

I’m not sure this is going to give Apple Watch any real competition. As is, the AW3 is a Fitbit killer. Google will probably finish the kill in a couple years and sell the brand name to a Chinese company for a few million ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess they realized fitbit’s big play of a $10/month subscription service, launched in September, wasn’t going to bring enough “transformation to its business model”. Not a surprise, is it?

Apple is changing their business strategy away from making profit from selling hardware. All companies want as much data as they can get their hands on. One would have to be extremely naive to think otherwise. Privacy is just an illusion not matter what you use. It's funny how some of you criticize Tim China for his stance on different things yet believe that he will guard all your personal information no matter what. You can't get to 1 trillion if you are stupid. Or nice. These people are ruthless. All of them.
Apple sells hardware. Now they are selling services to cover the slowing hardware sales.

Apple doesn’t sell ads as their primary method of profit. Google does.

The data Apple does collect is used to make their products better. Google collects data to sell advertisements.

Google is not the same as Apple.

Have worn a FitBit for seven years - night and day. After watching the data spread and dilution of my once loved Nest products, there's not a chance in hell that I'm letting Google near that amount of private life data about me in a FitBit acquisition. Hello there new Apple Watch... but gosh I wish it monitored sleep.

Apple Watch day 0 user here.

Is there currently an easy way for FitBit users to request / delete their data (ie before Google get their hands on it)?

And, is there any way for such users to move their health data to Apple iOS/watchOS?

So if you have an iPhone, the natural choice would be the Apple Watch, and it’s grown exponentially, and its marketing is just about everywhere. But I think what really helped Apples success with the watch, is now they sell the Apple Watch through carriers and retailers versus just Apple alone. Fitbit has been around a long time, but it’s mainly just used as a ‘fitness tracker’ aspect, where the Apple Watch is really a ‘computer’ on its own that can do so much more.

But the future for the Apple Watch isn’t necessarily just all these side capabilities, it’s the health features Apple keeps implementing. Sleep tracking is the next feature to be introduced next year.

Well Justice is a little preoccupied at the moment, not that they would care about this anyway.

If T-mo can buy Sprint, I can’t imagine they’d object to this.

Competition? LOL
Google had a head start on wearables, yet they failed. Google has zero vision in wearables. They cannot even decide what UI they want on WearOS.

The competitions are Samsung (minor) and Xiaomi (upcoming) with their own interpretations as Google is not doing anything useful in wearables other than tricking some watch brands to use WearOS.

I went through 5 Fitbit HD Charges in a little over a year due to the watches literally falling apart. On some the band just broke where it connects to the watch, on others the screen fell off so I made the switch to Apple Watch and have not looked back.

Any company with the slogan "Do No Evil" which is scary enough to have to say in the first place that removes said slogan in the darkness of night is a company I do not trust.
Rather than just ditch the “Do no evil” mission statement, they could have come clean and changed it to “We are evil”. But I guess they didn’t want to get into a trademark dispute with facebook :p

Soon to be seen (despite the denials):

Temp is 43F: Tap here to buy a jacket
You have 900 steps today: Tap here to order a pizza
It’s 12:20pm: Tap here to buy {personalized ad}
On Alarms: Tap here to buy snooze feature

Not to mention, ‘Tizen’ that’s run on some of the galaxy watches, it is absolutely garbage. Choppy with a poor U.I.

There are apps that can sync your data out of fitbit. They can usually get day-level data, but the minute-by-minute stuff is usually via approved partners only, and it's unclear who actually is part of that program.

We stopped being Fitbit customers when the devices failed on two fronts - connectivity and durability.
Now we are using wrist devices that cost under $30.

I use AutoSleep app to monitor my sleep on AW.

Which isn't anywhere as near as accurate as what Fitbit did. I tried again this week and it said I had 9:30 hours of sleep on Wednesday night. It was actually 6:58 according to my withing sleep.

I have no luck with any of the sleep apps for apple watch being accurte.

Hang in there, native sleep tracking for the Apple Watch is coming in 2020. Don’t worry, it will debunk pretty much anything else that you’re using for sleep tracking once it’s here. 😁

Now they are selling services to cover the slowing hardware sales.
And data will help them provide better services. Also they will share this data with third party partners (like movie studios that make content for ATV+ or game developers that make content for Apple Arcade). Like Google collects data to help advertisers target you with better ads and boost sales of certain products.

If you don't think that Apple will grab all the data they can and use it to make as much money off you as they can (just like Google) that's ok. Meanwhile China is allowing Apple to make all their hardware over there and sell some of it to Chinese consumers without snooping at the data collected from those devices because Apple won't let them. The country that completely pulled off from TV the most popular sport enjoyed by it's citizens because of a single tweet from a coach kneels in front of Apple's might. The one step procedure to avoid the surveillance of the Chinese government over there is to buy an iPhone.
