This is a ********** joke. I got my watch and made the assumption it was charged at least 50%, so I try to power it on and nothing happens. SO I plug it on and see the apple logo fade in and out, left it for around 20 minutes and afterwards still the same. So I went to support chat and they gave me a list of things to try and nothing. So now they tell me I have a faulty battery and I have to take it in for repair. This is just incredible, don't these things go through testing? Now I have to take it in for repair on the first ********** day of release.

Unfortunately, in the consumer electronics industry it is pretty standard to have a 1-2% DOA (Dead On Arrival) failure rate.

Yes I understand that aspect but shouldn't these things be tested before to make they do stuff like power on?

I'd be surprised if every Watch didn't go through testing enough to ensure it powers on (and that every subsystem is functioning).

But that might not catch, e.g., a weak solder somewhere, which broke during transport.

Not sure where you're basing your information. Apple always has replacement units on hand for defective units, even when sold out. Now this is true for iPhones, but I find it VERY hard to believe that they wouldn't have any watches on hand. That would be very un-Apple.

From an Apple Store manager. He said all stores are required to ship out for repairs during the initial launch.

Believe me, a lot of this launch hasn't been what even Apple had in mind originally.

They don't individually test every single unit that goes out. They test batches for quality control. There is a rate of failure for every single product that's ever been made. The world is an imperfect place. Apple didn't do this just to specifically piss you off on launch day.

I agree. I sympathise with the OP and I wouldn't want to wish this upon anyone. That said they have manufactured 2 million plus watches and there is no practical way of testing each and everyone. Like with any electronic device there is always a chance some will be dead on arrival and need fixing or replacing.
