to be honest I didn't like the first gen apple watch not because it isn't practical no it had many things to do I loved ! but the reason why I didn't like it because it was to slooooooooooow the app would would take forever to work and the for me broke the watch , but after the 3.0 update for the Apple Watch it was waaaaaaay better I didn't wanted to upgrade it for the second gen , then my apple watch broke so I had to buy the new one , its faster brighter and the battery life it much much better than the first gen and now I use it even more .
I can't live with out it I wear it every day even when I'm sleep and can't wait for the third gen .

I have Series 0, and it's incredibly slow – to the point that it's usually faster to pull my phone out. Did you notice a big speed change with Series 2 that made it more useable?

I think the consensus is Watch OS 3 has actually increased the battery life and performance considerably with the first Generation Watch. Third party applications can be an issue at times. Try a re-pair and determine if this makes any improvements.

Wow so unexpected to read how everyone loves their Apple Watch !

It's the best ever! Oh joy!

Why is there no mention that the wearable market is declining?

The watch is great for casual workouts.

Imagine how well an iPhone independent edition would do!
I wouldn't imagine it would do well. Siri is not really consistent or smart enough to text for you and making a call from the Watch is ridiculous. Beam me up Scotty

Scribble takes for ever if you want to respond with substance to anyone via text.

Revenue drop 8% (and where is the profit # on that revenue?). There was basically a fire sale on this thing over Christmas.

At least we do not need to keep hearing this thing called a luxury watch. Basically a gadget watch made in Taiwan that can be bought on sale at Walmart. Good luck wearing that with a suit.

Actually, it's interesting that the analyst assumes these are mainly Series 2 watches being sold - I'd like to see the Series 1 versus Series 2 sales quantified.

The few people I know who bought an Apple Watch - including myself - bought the Series 1. With the same internals as the Series 2 and a (slightly) sub-$300 price point, it seems like a compelling device.

"Demand for Apple's new Watch Series 2 as a holiday-season gift in Western markets was surprisingly strong and it enabled Apple to clear a large backlog of smartwatch inventory during the quarter,"

Because Apple lowered the price. They should drop it even further.

$299 for AW2 and $199 for AW1.

I think Apple may have sold twice as much if the initial price in 2014 would have been $299.

Go for market share, not outlandish profits, and you get more and happier customers, and more money in the long run.

I could have sworn I read that Garmin had a bigger share the other day. No matter, I still prefer my Fenix 3 over any watch from Apple.

I paid $800 for my Series 0 (42mm stainless steel with millines band) so it will take something spectacular for me to consider upgrading.

It's a fair comment and I'm surprised it wasn't picked up in the article, especially as the estimates for the first year's sales only covered an eight month period in limited markets and 2016 was for a full year with much wider distribution.

Yes that's true, but many people also were waiting in 2016 for the new watch to come out. If you look at sales for Q1-Q3 2016, they were tiny. Given that Series 1/2 didn't start shipping until September (and the Nike+ not until late October), the 15% drop isn't as meaningful as it seems. Let's compare the first full year of Series 0 sales to the first full year of Series 1/2 sales before any conclusions are made.

So this study we find credible?

"It is important to acknowledge that these are estimated figures, and that shipments do not necessarily reflect sales"

And as we all know Apple likes to do a little accounting sleight-of-hand so they'll consider them sold regardless if that is true or not.

battery life and speed is a good upgrade from series 1...glad i upgraded. doubt will need to upgrade every year though now

My own stock check in the Seattle area showed that the AW2 was totally gone after xmas, and there was huge stock of AW 1s. YMMV.

Apple is not known for stuffing the channel, if that's what you're implying. They had an extremely hard time keeping Apple Watch in stock during the entire Holiday season, basically selling every watch they made.

I haven't seen any mention about the channel inventory for the Watch at all. I would suspect that Apple would try to keep 5 to 7 weeks of inventory like they do for their other products. As long as the inventory is the same at the end of the quarters, then they haven't stuffed the channel. Wait until the mid-April conference call to claim channel stuffing.

My wife and I have a Series 2 and we haven't had any problems with lag. I didn't have a Series 0 though, so I can't directly compare. However, for most of the things that I do with the watch it is decently responsive and definitely not frustrating.

Also, it seems to actually have about 2 days of battery life; for example, I've been wearing mine now since 7am and I'm at 67% battery.
[doublepost=1485997721][/doublepost]Wife and I are very pleased with the watch overall. I think she'd be happier if the battery life was one week. I charge at night (and I wouldn't want to sleep with the watch on anyways) so battery life is not a big deal for me.

Some dumb things don't work..for example you can use the "find my friends" app to find friends but you can't ask Siri on your watch (I'm guessing they'll fix that sooner than later).

When I'm in my car sometimes it's easier for me to control the music from my watch (like selecting a playlist) instead of using the head unit or phone. Maybe if I had a CarPlay head unit that wouldn't be the case but for now it's convenient to have the watch.

I also like knowing when messages come in without having to grab my phone.

Surprising enough, my wife and I use the watch to find our phones fairly often as well.

My personal preference about future versions: I'd prefer a thinner watch just because I like the thinner look. I know some people like bulky watches but I'm not one of them. Knowing how Apple is, I suspect that future versions will be thinner.

Also, I know some people with the Fitbit "blaze" watch and I think it is super ugly and cheap looking. I can't believe so many people have it...it's really not that much cheaper than the Apple Watch. One thing I have noticed is that people that wear the Fitbit generally don't have much style/fashion and are cheap so I guess it all makes sense.

I'm still on the fence. If the 42mm series 2 SS wasn't $900 (cdn), the decision would be much easier.

According to that data Apple shipped 2m less AW in 2016 (11.6m v 13.6m in 2015) approx 15%drop! Going the wrong way Tim!
It doesn't take a genius to see what has happened here. For once, in particular during Q2 and Q3 (calendar) 2016, the Apple Watch Series 0 (aka original Apple Watch) was over a year old, that alone explains some decline in sales. But more important was probably another overlying trend, in that the excitement of the launch of the original Apple Watch was cooling off. The original excitement carried sales well into the holiday quarter of 2015. But the slowness of in particular third-party apps killed a lot the enthusiasm, as did the some less well-thought out aspect of the UI (eg, the 'Friends' button). Normally, you want a new product to keep growing beyond the first 9 to 12 months as word of mouth spreads and new uses are established. With the Apple Watch, that didn't happen which indicates that is was oversold originally.

However, watchOS 3 and the release of the Series 1 and Series 2 (both with a dual-core instead of the single-core of the Series 0) very significantly improved the speed of using the watch, in particular third-party apps and also improved battery life very noticeably, equally changes to the UI also represented a clear improvement. In a sense, watchOS 3 (plus the speed of the dual-core S2 processor) relaunched the Apple Watch. It is fair to say that Apple Watch was struggling somewhat for the first three quarters of 2016. But it makes a lot of sense to treat watchOS 3 and the S2 processor as starting a new period, which so far has changed things for the better.

So in total Apple has sold over 25 million watches. Pretty impressive. Cracks me up how some people call it a flop.

Every thread on MR has some calling it a failure and demanding Apple discontinue it. Seems they don't see that Apple has dominated this market and sold millions of devices.

They also don't see that getting someone to buy and love an Apple Watch then ties them to the iPhone. You aren't going to switch to a Samsung phone if you love your Apple Watch because you'd have to get rid of the watch too. It's a really smart move by Apple and benefits them on many levels.

Glad to see smart watches doing so well. I find them indispensable on most days. Yet somehow I still managed to misplace my Apple Watch series 0 Stainless model after my last unexpected out of town trip and ensuing holiday chaos. And trust me, I miss it.

So I've been wearing my Gear S2 watches until I get a chance to sort through and find my Apple Watch. I got a black Gear S2 with a leather band for Christmas. It's really nice.

Apple and Samsung have both done a great job with their smart watches. I do think Apple watches are more comfortable but that's just for me and my tiny wrist.

I think it would work out nicely someday for Apple to add LTE capability to their larger model. It can be quite a nice convenience if you forget your phone. My black Gear S2 doesn't have phone capability but the one I got for free from an AT&T promotion does and it got me out of a couple of jams out in the yard when I left my phone indoors.
