A similar thing happened to me ... I fell while walking the dog, realized that my watch wanted to call 911, and manged to cancel it. However, I was not ok, right after canceling, I passed out on the side of the street until I was found by a neighbor a bit later. I knew I was a bit dizzy, but I thought I was fine ... should have listened to the watch. Had a badly broken nose, so not too crazy, but still neighbor called 911, and I spend the night in the hospital, where they fixed me until I could have surgery.
So the watch would have done nothing extra to help you. Your nose was broken by the fall and you were found by the neighbour. Same end result.

This really sad story should be acknowledged as well. This Chicago Police Officer's apple watch called for help after she succumbed to her wound's.

Another PSA for people that like riding bikes -- don't have your phone in your jersey pocket with the screen on your sweaty back. I have literally butt dialed family members while on rides on two separate occasions.
It can happen on your arm too, if you run in rain with a long sleeved running jacket or just if you sweat too much in your long sleeves running gear.
I always lock my watch (water lock) if i know that it is a risk at my run.

I can vouch for this feature as well. Last year me and my sister bought a Series 7 for our mother, who unfortunately wasn’t doing well and would sometimes briefly lose consciousness and fall. The Watch detected pretty much every single fall, but fortunately there was always someone around to provide assistance, so calling the emergency services was not needed.
Thank you Apple.

Holy Moly! Were you riding a motorcycle by chance?
No, I was walking home. I used to walk a lot, would do between seven and ten miles a day. I'd been out to see a friend, I was walking home and the next thing I knew, I was heading towards a very nasty face-plant. Having been back to where it happened, there's a pothole and I think I must have tripped on that.

When they were deciding whether I needed surgery or not, I was x-rayed and then had an MRI. The consultant stopped counting at eight breaks and described it as a complete mush.

I was lying by the side of the road for about twenty minutes before some kind passers by stopped to help me. It was actually an off-duty police officer who was passing and saw me there and stopped. They called it in and a few minutes later a real police car tuned up and they took me home.

If I'd not cancelled the fall alert, the emergency services would have been called, an ambulance would have turned up and taken me straight to hospital rather than being delivered home. My wife opened the door to find me supported by a couple of plods with a broken shoulder, blood all over my face and a badly lacerated tongue. It was quite a shock.

I don't walk much now. It's totally destroyed my confidence.

I'm glad you're okay. That's terrifying.
Thanks. My shoulder has been screwed back together but I have limited movement and very little strength in either arm because my rotator cuffs are both torn to the extent that they'll never heal naturally without surgery.

It could have been a lot worse though.

I don't dispute that the fall detection on the iWatch has the potential to save lives, but do we actually know that both of these people would have died were it not for the fall detection? The headline seems misleading.

There's no way to know if a single incident would result in death, until it does. Did you want them to do randomized controlled trials of leaving old men on trails with blood clots, some with an Apple Watch and some without?

Total BS headlines. But....the focus is on the Kingdom of Cook so totally expected.

Probably a question that's been asked an answered, but why do you people who hate Apple and Apple products hang out on a MacRumors page? These aren't even informed opinions, they are just vitriol.

It detected when I fell once. I managed to cancel it because I thought I was OK.

I wasn't OK, I was absolutely knackered. I couldn't get up. I'd smashed my shoulder and ended up laying at the side of the road waiting for someone to stop and help.

If you don't have fall detection enabled, please do so. It's really important.

This is how my shoulder is now (x-ray in spoiler tags).

If you ever fall and it goes off, properly evaluate yourself before cancelling it.
I assume you might have been in shock? But you couldn’t use your watch or even Siri to dial emergency?
