Eventually our kids aren’t even going to know how to pay with cash or plastic lol

There's no reason to think that the concept of money won't completely change over another one or two hundred years. It's obvious it means something very different already but our caveman brains are having issues breaking away from 'money means so much thing...' but WHAT is money at this point? Monetary values, indeed the very definition of money will have to completely change in coming years. Think of us in 800Ad in the middle of what would soon be Europe and trying to grasp what 'economy' and 'money' looks like now. Everything changes.

I want to know more specifically about kid mode. I have a 12 year old child without an iPhone who wants to buy an Apple Watch. Neither of us are interested in the cellular version due to monthly service fees. The way I read it, is that if she buys an Apple Watch SE GPS and I have an iPhone X running iOS 14, we can run kid mode. I hope this is accurate and I’ll be curious to learn more.

yes that’s how family mode works as I understood it from the event video.

More on that though - Not sure you are thinking about the GPS tracking, but it just hit me that this could work without cellular for tracking a kid if it worked the same way as Airtags will work. All without need for cellular on the kids watch. Not quite as good as with cellular, but the logic of it makes some sense.

"Thanks Mom! Great doing business with you."
Is that how we raise children now? 🤔
Sounds like something my eleven year old nephew would say to his mom. He’s smart, fun, funny and well adjusted. A joy to be around. I’ll take thankful and clever/amusing over entitled, spoiled brat any day of the week 🤷‍♂️

I just plain and simple dislike the unnecessary child focus here. I don’t want my kids to have visible things that they potentially get robbed for. Apple thinks we all live in a fairytale...

Besides: watches and kids are a combo that make little sense. I have a 10 year and a 12 year old kid, and both have had smaller watches that have been long forgotten. In general, I see barely any kids wearing wristwatches, for obvious reasons of higher damage and loosing potential, but even more since kids plainly prefer not to have bulky stuf around their tiny wrists. The Apple watch gadget may well be more diverse in functionality, but it’s iPhones that serve their needs plenty well.

The people who come up with these use cases either don't have children at all or have so high disposable incomes that they treat an Apple Watch as a 20€ plastic/rubber Swatch.
By the time kids are able to realistically carry a Watch like this they will want and have a smartphone.
What Apple should do and the tech foundation is somewhat similar is prepare to sell the Apple Swatch as a standalone device.

I don't know, there is obviously a risk getting robbed for your watch, but it's not like the thief can actually use or sell the watch. Even if they force the child for the pin code, they can erase the watch but it will still be locked to your phone.

I can see this being useful especially for older kids around 14-16 onwards.

You guys do know this is *Family* setup, right? It’s not for only kids.

(...) without needing to worry about cash that can be easily lost or stolen (...)
Punks will just steal the watch itself.
Source: I come from a very troubled South American country, while living there got assaulted at two instances for my phone, crappy ones.... if theft is such an issue at a location, I wouldn’t give a watch to my kids if I had one.

Heck, criminals (they don’t care about age there) will be happy to know that there will be a new influx of new watches for easy picking.

And what kind of people only have watches (of the Apple kind) and no smartphones to pair them to?

That is just mind blowing, give a 10 or 20 euro bill, not safe, forget it, carry a several hundread euro device, ok, wonderful.

Yep Apple's advertising is so "aspirational" that it's beyond parody. I loved the "help with your tennis strokes" as well - yep that's exactly what I do after a hard day of downsizing the proles, is use my Apple kit to help my serve before I go back to my $10m house and perfect family...

This is bad for bullies...
How are they going to beat up now kids for their "lunch" money?
Are they expected to drag the child to the POS or steal their Apple Watch and torture the child to give up the Apple Watch PIN?

I do believe after listening to the replay of the event that the AW needs to be cellular version and have a carrier plan. I can’t see it not working with our a connection while out and about. Understand they focused on kids but having an older parent, it would give them something better then some of the other devices out there on the market for a piece of reassurance.

Personally I envision this as a step to something that could be bigger. I wonder for those who love their Apple Watch and being in the Apple Ecosystem but are tempted by some of the new Samsung phones (Note 20 Ultra, Fold 2, Z Flip etc) if this gives them the opportunity to use a Apple Watch and a Android phone.

Understand the AW needs to be setup with an iPhone but you could do that with your account I would think and then go out and about.

I have a Z Fold 2 being delivered today early and a Series 4 AW with a cell plan already. I think I will have to play around here later tonight.

Doh, plenty of senior people do. My mother still rocks cheap Nokia phone.
Well, so does my 94 old grandpa. Of course some people exist. The question is how many and what use case to build around it.
In fact I think it would make a lot more sense to purpose this for older people than kids.
I still believe what would really print money for Apple is a standalone Apple Watch. They have the opportunity to corner this as they did with the iPad.

It made sense for both. I have part of my relatives that wants to know AT ALL TIME where their kids are. This is perfect for them. Robbing? They wouldn’t worry about that.

Previously, Apple Cash was limited to 18 years or older. NFC payment (Apple Pay) is a lot more prevalent these days, at least in the US. Thanks to COVD-19, many retailers do not accept cash these days. So Apple Cash Family is a welcome and timely addition.

This article and Apple do not confirm whether Apple Cash Family is limited to Apple Watch only. I presume it would work on kid's iPhone as well?

I hope Apple is also working on Apple Card Family.
this.

$20?!!! Wow! I‘m a Millennial and I used to only get a dollar for doing my chores as my weekly allowance.

That’s way beyond the rate of inflation!!
You must have been wealthy! ;) I didn't get an allowance or money for doing chores (I'm not a millennial though). Chores were part of being a family and working together.

Apple’s ultimate endgame is to have the Apple Watch become the primary device for communication. It removes all the negative aspects of owning a phone (privacy, data mining, distractions of social media and games) and distills it into a neat device that is always there with you.

This is the next step in their plan: a generation growing up wondering why they’d even need a phone at all.

And while Android faffs around with more screens and breakable bends, Apple will have stolen the future right from under Google.

Thing is, I don't remember we were taught that way even though we are smart, fun and funny. 🤣
That sounded a little disrespectful to mama.

You did chores to be part of a family? I had to do chores if I wanted to be.

"...set up an Apple Watch for another family member, managing access to various features and capabilities and receiving reports on activity..."

big brother - family style
