This is so much potential, just need Apple Cash in the UK, oh and more Cellular available for Apple Watch plans. 🙄

"...set up an Apple Watch for another family member, managing access to various features and capabilities and receiving reports on activity..."

big brother - family style
You know what is funny about this comment? I got beat up here on MR for asking about parental controls for an iPod touch eons ago.

gasp, I wanted to limit my 10 years and younger kids access to the internet, to YouTube and so on. Mostly by people without kids who thought my kids should have free access to it all - it hadn’t “hurt” them after all....

Enter today a very controversial film that depicts just the scenario those non-parents suggested. And the message that we should be policing our kids online a a bit more so that they can be “kids”

Stop. Judging. Parental. Choices.

When you have kids you get to make these decisions, but no one should be beating up anyone. Support the parents, it’s a hard job.

Oh and you can support them without agreeing with them.

I have to say:

Thanks Mom!
Great doing business with you. 🙌

is an interesting response to chores LOL

not a feature I need (or even available in canada) but I’m sure helpful for many

I am interested in the ability to add a child's apple watch to my own account, It will come really handy as it will allow my child to have a active communication device in school and while out and about with location but without the distraction of a smartphone. Too many parents these days hand their kids smartphones without much control and the kids do what ever.

Family Setup offers other helpful tools for parents and kids, with Schooltime and Downtime features that offer controls over when and what kids can do with their Apple Watch, kid-focused Activity rings, and more.

Based on how my teenager's Screentime and Downtime works, it'll allow unlimited access to my bank account. Pass.

do not pay your kids for doing stuff they should be doing either way.
not sure if getting parental advice from macrumors is the best choice.

regardless, this is a really cool feature and i'm picturing a bunch of scenarios in my childhood where this would be so helpful

I'm really hoping Apple Cash will work on kid's phones as well. Mine has a hand me down because she needs it for medical reasons, and it would be really great if I could give her some emergency spending money directly on her phone. Plenty of times (pre pandemic) she had time between school and practice that she and her classmates would go grab something to eat, and having Apple Cash would have been much better for her than having to carry cash.

I just plain and simple dislike the unnecessary child focus here. I don’t want my kids to have visible things that they potentially get robbed for. Apple thinks we all live in a fairytale...

Besides: watches and kids are a combo that make little sense. I have a 10 year and a 12 year old kid, and both have had smaller watches that have been long forgotten. In general, I see barely any kids wearing wristwatches, for obvious reasons of higher damage and loosing potential, but even more since kids plainly prefer not to have bulky stuf around their tiny wrists. The Apple watch gadget may well be more diverse in functionality, but it’s iPhones that serve their needs plenty well.
That and I don't even see why a kid needs a smartphone. Maybe a cheap phone to call home.
The iPhone 3G came out while I was in middle school, and I never cared for an iPhone until near the end of high school when I was a bit more independent, e.g. driving a car. What was I going to use it for, playing video games between classes?

Trying to setup Apple Cash Family for my 2 teenage boys and on my end as I go thru the motions it tells me that Apple Cash is already setup for them. Yet when I go to their phone Apple Cash is not enabled. If I try to enable it on their phones it erros saying it can’t be setup. Tried having one of them log out of iCloud and back in but that did not help. Anyone have any ideas?

I get the notification in Wallet touting this feature, but whenever I click "Start now", I get this error message

"Not supported. The feature you selected is not supported."

Anyone running into an error message like this? I tried restarting my phone to no avail.

I ran into that earlier but one of my members still hadn’t upgraded to ios14. Once I got that phone upgraded then I was able to proceed further but now my 2 boys I’m not able to enable it saying that they already have it enabled (which they don’t) and when I try to enable it on their phones it gives an error.

It makes some sense to me in a place like NYC where people are heavily dependent on public transportation and that public transportation supports NFC. You give kids a digital allowance, and it lets them pay money on a subway trip to visit friends, buy stuff at the bodega, at the NFC enabled vending machine, or in-app purchases without giving your kids access to your credit card. Otherwise, maybe just the in-app purchases aspect makes more sense.

This is bad for bullies...
How are they going to beat up now kids for their "lunch" money?
Are they expected to drag the child to the POS or steal their Apple Watch and torture the child to give up the Apple Watch PIN?
Don’t underestimate bullies. My bullies would have just forced you to buy them their lunch or something and that’s how they’d get “paid” instead.

It will work on their iPhone provided they have iOS 14 installed. They can also add a regular debit card to Apple Pay as well. Current makes a full on kids debit card controlled by the parents that can be added to Apple Pay.
