Just another sign that Apple is losing it's edge. When people start hacking your devices for greater customization, you know you're in trouble. This Apple stock bubble isn't even close to getting rock bottom yet. Based on some charts and graphics I recently mocked up, i'm looking for Apple shares to reach $70 this time next year.

That's not a valid excuse.

That's like saying Apple shouldn't allow custom wallpapers on the next iPhone because it will make the product look bad on people trying to buy it.

Of course it's a valid excuse. Apple doesn't add just anything users clamor for; if it makes sense to their long-term strategy (and establishing their brand is very important to them), they will do it. Also, they designed their watch faces to conserve battery life (that OLED screen draws energy in the different way than standard displays, hence the amount of black on most of Apple's faces). They'd get blamed for low battery life if they let people throw up crazy animated faces on there. It doesn't make strategic sense for them to open up the kimono right now.

People have been hacking Apple products for greater customization forever...jailbreak for example. This is nothing new at all. So I think Apple doesn't need to worry just based on this new development alone.

Chill. The watch is only 4 months old. Who's to say Apple will never allow 3rd party watch faces? They haven't said anything about it one way or the other. For all we know they're coming but other things have taken priority.

Apple will likely allow third party watch faces sooner or later, if for no other reason than it'd be another revenue stream for Apple.

And exactly because of that, it's a good bet that Apple will not allow any master watchface "player" apps that allow people to share their own custom faces outside of the App Store.

A real pity. One of the things that's nice about Android Wear watches are the thousands of faces that people share freely. E.g. at http://facerepo.com/app/search/results?sortOrder=downloaded-most&page=1

Very funny. I just drew a pie chart that shows AAPL doubling in the next six months. And the best part is that I drew the chart on the face of an Apple Watch!

Kind of love the omgonoz face. Almost enough to tempt me to finally jump on the apple watch wagon.

Isn't the reason obvious from this article? ...because people will make watch faces that look like the one in the video. Not saying it isn't funny, but you can't believe that apple want something they spent so much time and effort marketing as a high fashion device being seen like that video (which also highlights how small the screen is compared to the watch face).

As an owner of an apple watch, I'm also not interested in custom faces. Custom complications, some additional "sensible" faces, more customisation options (eg colors) is far more important to me. This is also consistent with most other apple watch owners I know.

I disagree. I look at it the same way it took forever to finally change the wallpaper to something you liked on iOS. Apple, I love them; but damn.. Control. Freaks.

I want a better user interface, there is a lot of hardware support

- touch screen
- force touch
- motion sensors
- microphone
- digital crown
- home button
- side button

But Apple is not using it efficiently.

One of the best use cases for AW is to change music without the need to take out your phone. What if I with one tap in a corner, a button press, hand shake or whatever bring up a list of my song and select/scroll with the the digital crown, similar to an iPod. Or if I could switch app with the side button, similar to cmd/alt-tab.

One swipe up gets you to the Music glance where you can modify the music playing on your iPhone.

Double clicking the Crown does exactly what alt-tab does: switches back and forth between two apps.

i think you're right about this. WatchOS 2.0 is probably what they really wanted to put out at the beginning but didn't have time to perfect it. Custom faces was probably originally a "2.0" idea.
Watch OS 3.0 at best would be what they really want to put out. 2.0 is still pretty limited for developers. The product was not ready for release.

the developer blew it. he could have done up a compelling watch face that will make Apple rethink its stand on 3rd party watch faces. instead, what we saw is...:(

severe curation on their part
that requires pristine curation.

I don't think it's a curation thing

"the utmost highest level of curation"

No offence meant, but please is it really necessary to use of the word "curation" for just everything that is simply a product offering? I haven't read nor seen anyone use it at this rate before Apple used it for its marketing interests.

Curation is what art galleries and museums do.
Yes, it is not just limited to the elite, but we are talking about watch faces here...

I am sure limiting the watch faces can hardly be called curation.
It is just a limitation and regulation on their part.

It has nothing to do with curation.
These are design choices to serve the product or brand.

This video is pretty much the best view of what Apple tries to prevent by controlling the watch faces... It's shockingly ugly and makes the watch look like a ridiculous toy instead of a premium product

Believe most of us were voicing our thoughts about Apple's actions if they ever let developers build Apple Watch faces and allow them on the store. I definitely stand by my use of curation there. I find it tough to see Apple letting any developer create watch faces without Apple's own vote on it.

Not allowing developer watch faces right now is not curation, you're right.
