Target currently offers the 38mm Milanese Loop is on sale for $549, and then buy a $340 Hermes band, saving themselves $361 over the $1250 Hermes price. So depending on the deal being offered on any given day at any given retailer ...

Now I understand you get a great deal of pleasure out of your Hermes edition, but honestly, is the Hermes face worth $340 to you?
I was comparing MSRP. Specials are another story. Also, the $340 is for the Single Tour. The Double Tour is $490. The Single Tour packaged set sells for $1100. $1100-$340=$760 vs. $549 for the lowest priced Apple Watch Stainless Steel, which results in a difference of $211.

If I were buying a new watch today I'd think about it. That's why I'm partially surprised that Apple and Hermes didn't price the band $200 higher. Maybe they are planning to update the price of the Single Tour packaged set to $950 either in 2 weeks when the bands go on sale, or when the new Apple Watch is released (remember it does have an extra year of warranty, so $950 would be enough to eliminate most of the "arbitrage").

I hadn't noticed.
Kinda hard to miss -- no traditional watch face that is the shape of the device -- just circles in a square. For myself, I mostly use the 'Modular' face, but occasionally it would be nice to switch to a traditional one better suited to the Apple Watch shape, like the face exclusive to the Hermès variant... Thanks though for stopping by

Oh sorry, you're right. I mistakenly though the Apple site listed the watches from single Tour to cuff, but they start with the Double Tour. And yes, if I were a woman, I'd opt for the Double Tour anyway because that's the iconic Hermes band. So now looking at that band, you're right, $211 is a bit less of a problem, but still a pricey difference for what amounts to a watch face. Not to mention in the Target deal you're also getting a second extremely nice band.

I'd still like to know why there were no new co-branding partnerships at the 1 year mark, as speculated, especially since they didn't announce these bands. I wonder if Hermes has an exclusive window with Apple. Might there be a Hermes Watch 2? Or will that deal come to an end with the next gen watch, or renewed? Perhaps with the ability to add additional partners at that point -- almost like ATT had the iPhone exclusively until the iPhone 4.

Why some colors only in one size? Talking about diversity...
Without being explicit, the "women's" colors are available in only 38mm. Unisex colors are available in both sizes. The Cuff is aimed at men, and so is 42mm only.

Well, at least Apple hopes someone will buy them. Certainly, if nothing else, it helps continue the AW fashion narrative. My guess is the markup on these is so eye-popping huge, and production relatively low, it's not a big $ gamble on Apple's part. Even if they are slow sellers it's "cheap" eye candy PR if they are conspiculosly showcased in Hermes stores.

A friend of mine worked in a jewelry store in college, and she was just blown totally away by the 'margins'. It wasn't 300% either. Some items is was 1,500%, and others even higher. I bought wedding rings at the local Service Merchandise, feeling that at least the markup wasn't in the stratosphere. They've lasted quite a long time too.

And on crazy margins: Cables at Worst Try had ~500% markups at one point based on our cost and what they sold for there, and we weren't getting the best prices from the distributors either. Printer cartridges too. SKY HIGH..

I appreciate such a sobering warning. Although neither of us gained anything monetarily from our families, I definitely credit them with moving out west to where the opportunities were easier to find, and the two of us pretty much earned this lifestyle together. But things can change in an instant!

Well, the MacBook hardware in general is superior in build quality to a lot of the competition. But just to 'look cool'... hahaha.

I was hoping that you wouldn't take my comment as a slight.

The industry is built on people trying to 'look cool': I 'had to have' an Izod polo shirt in school. HAD TO HAVE IT DAMMIT!!! It lasted about a month, until the dad, in his second foray into domestic duties, threw everything in the washer, on HOT(!), and my brothers red crayon melted and stained everything in the load. It's moments like that that show the value of 'things'...

I have been tempted to go Buddhist, but I can't give up my 'stuff' Like the time I tried to go strict vegan, and started dreaming about Italian salami. I just couldn't live with myself, waking up starving every morning, knowing that overly processed porcine flesh were the only thing that could satiate that longing...

Cheers...

Yep  I stopped at Mickey:D. Cheers...

Ostrich and exclusivity. I get it. Too exclusive for me. I don't want to cry when it gets scratched. The way my luck works, that would happen within the first few days...

The leather bands are supposed to show wear and tear, and develop patina over time. That's one complaint I had about the original Apple Classic Leather band. It was too "perfect" after a few months of use. My Fauve Barenia band is noticeably darker now than what it was brand new.

Hermes and Apple. 2 companies getting away with exorbitant prices.
$340 is a steal for an Hermès band.

I already think regular Apple Watch bands are to expensive, but why in the world are these so expensive. I can get the same stuff off Amazon for $50.
You are ignorant if you think some $50 knockoff can lay a candle to the Hermès.

Maybe. But no small piece of leather is worth that much money. People accuse Apple of having enormous profit margins. But it's really the clothing and accessory companies that should be complained about.

I don't care how good the quality is, I would never pay that much for a watch band. I can barely stomach the $50 for a sport band.

I guess you don't pay a $5000 for watch either?

Nope but I know a couple people at the office who would. Its funny I buy a new iPhone once a year and they give me **** but then they have watches on that cost thousands of dollars and all they do is tell they time and maybe have the date. But yeah guess I'm just poor.

I think the word is 'practical'...

I have a 3,000 dollar watch. Never wear it anymore. Tried to sell it. Figured it was worth at least in the neighborhood of 1,500. Nope. More like 500-650! That is the LAST expensive watch I ever buy. Waste of money.

One 'young person' once told me that I 'looked old'. I asked how old they thought I was, and they looked at my wrist, and said that since I wore a watch 'still' (eyes roll), I HAD to be as old as their dad. Damn... Their dad is in his 60's! That hurt... They did say I was 'cooler than my dad', but the damage was done... :(o_O

How do you feel about engagement/wedding rings?

Look I know where your going with this, I don't care what people like to spend their money on its fine. That said I don't see MYSELF buying a $340 watch band, doesn't mean other people can't or shouldn't. Heck I have light bulbs that cost 60 bucks each and people think thats crazy, SO who's to judge? You get one life and you can't take your money with you (although you could leave it for your kids if your into that sort of thing) so do what makes you happy, doesn't mean anyone needs to approve it.

SO who's to judge?

Oh I wasn't judging, and I understand you weren't judging either, you were just pointing out that those people were kind of hypocritical for saying something about you while having a similar position on a different object. I was just curious how you felt about wedding rings when you thought that one can spend a lot of money on a watch "that only tells time". That's all. (So maybe you didn't really know where I was going with it, I wasn't going anywhere, I was curious!)

a wedding ring gives you a lot more auxiliary benefits than a watch, on the whole...

Maybe you, but I'm not convinced it would apply for me. Except maybe joint tax filing, but I think that might actually end up costing more.

Anyhow sorry for driving this semi-off topic, I'm sure people can post pictures of their new watchbands here after the 19th.

So the lady with bigger wrists or the guy with smaller wrists can't buy the watch with the band color of their choice.

That's not that different from Apple. Certain Edition models are available in 38mm or 42mm only. Most of the colors are available in the 38mm Hermes. The only band option not available is the cuff. The double-tour is only in 38mm. However, it will fit on all but the largest of women's wrists.
