The fact that you worked for Apple says you were a cog in a wheel; nothing more and nothing less. "This thing is a joke." Nice job of bringing some substance to the discussion.

Substance? He's making it very simple for you. Its a joke. Its not how much you write, its what you write.

 The apple watch isn't for the regular joe to begin with. There's no real need for a smart watch. No one out there is in need of a smart watch. No one goes " wow I really need a watch that is smart".

A phone however people need. People need a phone to talk to other people, do business, perform tasks etc.

A smart watch is not and will never be of any real use. It's simply a luxury item for the people who have money that want to look stylish. Hence the aggressive pricing. Apple knows they aren't going to sell a lot of these.

It's geared towards 3 types of people out of millions.

1) The tech savvy - loves the new gadgets needs it now has the money. These people will probably get the steal version
2) The fitness or health nerd - has some cash to get the sports version
3) The people that find this stylish and will wear it like jewelry. These people are getting the gold version.

- When was the last time you found jewelry to have any function with it?
- When was the last time the technical minded cared that it was "too complicated"?
- When was the last time the fitness or health nerd didn't spend too much on a fitness product?

Those are the types of people this watch is demo'd for. Otherwise the smart watch has no purpose. Unless you're one of those 3 kinds of people a smart watch is simply not for you.

I find it interested that people say it's too complicated and the next post someone says that the watch has no function. Doesn't make any sense. Clearly it has function if it's complicated right? Otherwise it wouldn't be complicated.

I'm sorry Apple designed a product that is simply not for you. I think it's your time to move on with your life.

The "1K" comment is referring to the Apple Watch (not Sport or Edition). That's not the line that's going for the luxury market. Regular Joes ought to be able to afford a stainless steel watch (and we can, as long as it's not made by Apple).

I wonder if Gruber is going to expand on his thoughts here:

http://daringfireball.net/2014/09/apple_watch

It really doesn't seem like Apple is too far ahead of the competition at all. I was hoping there would be more to it but it doesn't seem like it to me.

knowing gruber he will make a small mention of it buried in a big paragraph. then release his frustration on some random google or samsung story

I imagine you could buy the Space Black Watch and a black plastic band...

Put the plastic band on your watch, and I bet you could fetch a LOT for the black SS watch band as it is not sold individually. It could be a way to subsidize a stainless black face (in theory).

It would be quite the look to mix say a Stainless Steel watch with the black stainless band.

Maybe if I bought a few to do this, I could subsidize my entire watch. (Wishful thinking).

Still, you know people will pay on eBay quite a bit for a stainless black band when you can't buy it individually.

well, I'm making much more than $45K per year, but I can't afford a $1000 watch, because you know, the same year I need to spend $800 for an iPhone and maybe another $599 for an iPad (at least every other year) and why not other $1800 for a Macbook (at least every 3-4 years).
Life isn't easy :D

totally misread this post until i saw the smiley at the end: first world problems

You cannot unfortunately just buy the steal space black watch and then get a plastic band. Men are forced to spend 1100 dollars if you want the cooler steal space black watch.

I don't think many men are getting the smaller 38mm watch over the 42mm watch. It's a social thing. Women wear small watches men wear larger watches.

I agree with you on price, it's in the right range to return the margins Apple thrives off of.

The potential problem is simply public acceptance. Those who can easily afford one may have little interest. Celebrities, Pro Athletes, and the Power Brokers of which their are tens of thousands, buy statement watches, jewelry and the like.

From 15 feet away this watch is distinctly bland, conventional in outer appearance and will go completely unnoticed. Not what the rich and beautiful people are interested in.

If it doesn't draw admiring glances (and it won't) only the wanna be's will be desperate for one. I don't care how limited the Gold Edition might or might not be.

Apple is funding this product and may continue to do so to save face.
I get where you're going and I respect your opinion with the exception of the last sentence and time will tell.

IMO the Apple Watch Sport will do *incredibly* well with teenagers and 20-somethings. ....like it will be the device to have and holiday sales will go through the roof. I also think people like myself who own small to medium sized companies and are invested in the Apple ecosystem will be on this like white on rice. I got a taste of the value of a smart watch when I owned a Moto 360. It absolutely and unequivocally made my life better and I was more productive in my work. Mind you, I get on average 100 calls, 100+ emails and a 100+ texts a day - most of which are business related. The ability to glance at my wrist as opposed to grabbing the phone (many times in my pocket) saved a lot of valuable time.

I think the Apple Watch will also do very well but the added price will keep a lot of people away.

The Apple Watch Edition? Eh. Not my cup of tea but living in a city where people have no problem flaunting their affluence (and do) I think it will sell well. BTW, wearing a 10K + Apple Watch edition should come crosshair tattoo that you can put on your forehead. Bahahahahahahahahaha

Oh how I love hitting the MR forums on days like today; brings all of the wannabe pundits out of the woodworks.

Here's the thing.....

The price points for the Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch are spot on. If you can't afford one, I get that and I'm not being a smart ass. .....just don't come to the boards and say the price is too high; because it's not.

Putting aside the issue that wannabe punditry is the whole point of this site, I agree that grumbling about the prices is pointless. The question is what is the value of the product and technology. And I think today confirmed for all but the most delusional this is a product without any real merit. Its still too early to say how this will play out--but it looks like the end of the Tim Cook era to me

Flying in the face of any rational time management strategy.

Yep, I realize you cannot buy the space black watch with a plastic band.

I am suggesting, you can sell the black band that comes with it to make some money and put a plastic band on it for use and you'd get a LOT (in my guess) for the band on eBay or wherever you wanted to sell it.

I know it's a bit of a silly idea, but, it still came to me...

That's likely true, but that argument along with the heirloom argument is just trying to rationalize an irrational purchase. If people really cared about appreciation, they'd invest that money in the S&P index fund.

For the vast majority of people who drop $10K+ on a watch, it's an emotional purchase... ie, irrational. And that's ok, most people make irrational purchases/decisions. It just seems more irrational when the stakes are higher, but for the wealthy, it's no different than people buying the aluminum Apple Watch.

I dont think anyone making under 300K should be buying 10k on a watch. There is no guarantee that if you pulling down a high income today you will be doing so tomorrow.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I like it.

It has very limited a functionality that is far easier to access on a smart phone.
Clearer?

Only victims of advertising will buy an Apple watch.

Because no matter how many ads Apple buys in Vogue and other stupid magazines, the watch is ugly and lame.

All the prices are now up and running on the Apple site.

According to the UK the stainless steel with the link bracelet will cost £819...not sure I can drop that on a SS when the Sport starts at £299...essentially they are charging £520 for the strap....REALLY
If the bracelet will be high quality, 520 is not too much.
Welcome to the watch world! :D

Most overpriced gadget of all time.
You can say that about all high-end watches!
I bet you wear a Timex or a Casio. ;)

?? I didn't say it would flop. All I said is it's not a "designer watch". It's an expensive watch, but not a designer watch in the classical sense that can warrant such a high price point (for the mid range and up models). It's not designed by a fashion icon. It's not handmade. It's not going to last 20+ years. It's not even on trend (unless you the squished marshmallow look is popular where you live). It's just not a designer watch; it's a gadget.

"Dead in 5" implies flop.....

Approximately fifteen years ago, I purchased a Patek Phillipe 5056P watch for $16,000. The last sale at Christies', in 2011, for a 5056P was $37,000+.

What will be the auction value of a $20,000 Apple Edition watch fifteen years from now? What will be its value fifteen minutes after it exits the Apple Store?

Fifteen minutes after it leaves the store it will be still be worth it's purchase price as long as the Apple 14 day return policy applies to this model. :p

This is one of the first Apple products I have no interest in purchasing. I cannot justify spending $350 or possibly $400 that pretty much just relays information from my pocket to my wrist.

If it was $150 I might consider it.

I want one. I shall have one.

If I can stay awake another hour (questionable) I will see if they open up pre-orders at 12:01!

What a remarkable device! I can't believe EVERYONE doesn't want one!
