I'd rather them release new straps for the holidays and let this watch be the current version until Fall 2016.

Hopefully it's not the plastic Apple Watch C!!!!

Actually I could see this being more accurate with the school season and upcoming holidays. Instead of marking down the Apple Watch and devaluating it, they could just throw on some plastic "c" casing and sell it for $249. These will sell like hotcakes.

Although I think there's a lot to like about the watch today (as I did with the original iPhone), the roadmap is incredibly bright for this product from a software, hardware and aesthetic perspective. As a result, I see a compelling reason to periodically upgrade for a long time to come.

If they wanted something that was in between the pricing for the SS and the Edition, then yes titanium would be a good choice. They could price that at $2-3000, and still make it achievable for people who just won't even consider a $10,000 watch.

Given the sheer cost of materials on Apple Watch Edition models, one wonders if Apple will develop a trade-in program for upgraders that preserves the value while still capturing a new sales margin?

Apple could put new guts in old casings or just remelt it.

Rocketman

I've been saying this the whole time, man. I think you're absolutely right.

In what market do you sell someone a $17,000 piece of jewelry with the potential that it would be obsolete within a couple of years? My guess is that they have a very well worked out roadmap for upgrades that extends far beyond this generation or the next generation of watches. Including specific design constraints for internal components that would allow upgrades even after the physical casing changes.

For instance, first-generation buyers who hold on to their watch for a few years and want to upgrade to fourth-generation internal components could easily do so with the right foresight on the design side. Components will have been further miniaturized by then, so as long as a framework and upgrade path is in place it should be no problem.

I like the plastic iWatch idea. They could throw in the previous years internals and knock the price down for a device with mass appeal.

oh wow, does this mean that Apple haven't really thought this through at all?

This must be 'oh no' Apple Watch didn't trend as much as Macbook and TopGear.

Maybe a plastic one will gain irony status - and become a best seller.

If Apple makes one, I expect they would want to differentiate the Platinum from the SS version somehow. Most likely with an exclusive type of band.
Solid platinum link band - only a hundred grand for the combo, please. Applecare for it costs you another hundred grand, but then you also get a 24/7 in-person body guard included in the price... ;)

Titanium

Titanium would reduce the weight of a 42mm, 50g watch with sapphire crystal to that of the 38mm, 25g sport watch, or less.

Also put me down for waterproof to 3M.

I would upgrade for either.

Maybe Jony was like "Dude - 17K - we can totally top that. Let's add a watch at the 25K price points...."

I can see any of these being a possibility:

- Polycarbonate Watch, plastic screen, maybe costing around $199 to $239, with the rubber strap

- "Soft Touch" plastic watch, plastic screen, costing around $249-$299, same band as sport

- Titanium watch, Sapphire screen, costing around $699-$799, with a titanium bracelet

- Ruggedized Rubber/Plastic watch, POLED screen, costing around $399-$499, with a reinforced bracelet

I don't really see Platinum happening. 18K gold is probably as far as they'll go.
