The good thing is you can choose which app or device you want the health app to use first for active calories under active calories and share data by clicking edit at the top.

But my resting calories are not showing up from any app in the health app?

The whole health app is really kinda wonky right now, lots of settings in many different locations.

I'm so glad this thread is here! I have just started using my watch and am trying to leave behind my Fitbit and just use the apple watch with myfitnesspal for dietary calories.

My main issue now is that I cannot find my TOTAL calories burned in a day compared to total calories eaten. apple watch and health kit breaks the data up in resting and active, but doesn't show them together. Fitbit does this and when synced with myfitnesspal I get a very clear picture of what my caloric deficit should be.

Anyone figure out how to do this?

Not many apps will record your resting calories. Not sure why but i suspect this is because the all calculate it themselves since its a relatively static metric. Only ones I have found are Sleep Cycle, Withings, and Sync Solver for fitbit. But its kind of irrelevant since MFP doesn't read from it anyway.

A few comments. Looking around here and other places, it appears Apples calculation of resting calories (viewable in the Activity app on phone) is off by a good margin. I thought perhaps they were really using an EER calc but i don't think so anymore. For MFP purposes, their update today now pulls in AW steps which is great and then does some calc to determine calorie burn. MFP does its own calc of BMR+EER which you can see. Not sure how their calcs between the AW and fitbit differ. But MFP cannot use the calorie burn that the AW shows because I do not think there is enough data to match up the resting calories, EER calories, and then subsequent "additional" calories. So it just uses the steps as an estimate.

The Activity app on the iPhone for the AW shows you the total calories burned in a day -- theoretically -- although as I said, i think the resting calories are off. Within the health app, there is no aggregated total calories (just resting calories and active calories). But again not sure it matters. Most apps will do the BMR/EER calc themselves.

I was going to get rid of my Jawbone UP24 now that I have my watch...but I'm using the UP to track sleep at night while my watch charges. May continue this trend to get the most data (sleep, steps, calories burned, etc) into the Health app. Seeing my sleep patterns is a big deal for me

Myfitnesspal doesn't log steps from the Apple Watch for me, only if you do a workout. Is this a bug?

It's not working well for me either yet. The first day I used it my workouts and most of my steps didn't show up until the end of the day. Yesterday my workout never showed up and it used the step count for the previous day again.

Once they fix the bugs I think it's going to be pretty slick but right now it's just kind of frustrating.

Still no luck, is this happening to anyone else?

It wasn't including any of my steps either. After the MFP update, I had to open up the MFP app on my Apple watch and slide through all the screens. On the last screen there was a message about how to select it in the MFP app on the iPhone.

Only after seeing that message on the watch was I able to then view and select the "Apple Watch" option on the iPhone MFP app via More > Steps > Apple Watch.

Now my steps do show up but they are not consistently displayed in real-time (even if I force quit and re-open the MFP app). So I'm not certain at what interval it reads that data. I'm hoping this improves soon, still a bit wonky.

This seems to be working for me after the update today. In Health i have allowed MFP to read & write all data (Sources > MyFitnessPal > Select all). Now the workout i did with the Watch is automatically added to MFP, albeit with a 1 calorie difference for reasons unknown.

Here is the same data in the Activity app:

Whats frustrating is the shows in MFP as Bicycling <16kph Leisure when in reality i was at >25kph whilst doing bicep reps at the same time to push up my heart rate. I used Digifit iCardio with a chest strap prior to the watch and this usually showed a burn of around 450-500 for the same exercise routine. Either Watch is a little more conservative or DigiFit was over estimating. I have no idea!

Edit: One other point to mention. For tracking Steps, MFP was defaulting to my iPhone (which is a lot more stationary since i got the Watch!) In MFP go to More>Steps>Choose a Device and select Apple Watch.

How is your apple watch working with myfitness pal? I tried it out again today and had a big discrepancy with my workout data. My heart rate was off along with my calories burned.

I'm going to try adding my bluetooth heart rate monitor to the apple watch and see if I get the same heart rate / calories burned as when I was using prior to the apple watch.

Very frustrating that the apple watch is off on workout data.

Is it just me or has MyfitnessPal suddenly stopped getting steps data from the Apple Watch?
Everything was working ok, now without any change in settings, the app seems to be taking steps only from the phone.
My settings on both the app and the watch app are set up ok and it was working earlier this week.
Has there been an update that's stopped it working?

I've been using the two for the past week and it's been great. All my workout and walking data go into the MFP app and it just automatically makes the appropriate adjustments to my remaining calories for the day.

In my case though, the workout app is a little high when I use the elliptical and it's closer when I'm just using a treadmill. That's the only part that worries me a little bit.

What is your total steps now and what exactly does it say under Cardio Exercise in MFP? Both the text label and calories burned from steps?

This page helped me a lot

How do I enable step tracking in MyFitnessPal using the Apple Watch?

First, launch the MyFitnessPal app on your Apple Watch. This will register your Apple Watch with the MyFitnessPal app on iPhone.

Second, launch the MyFitnessPal iPhone app, and visit More > Steps. Select "Apple Watch" as your step source. This choice will use data from both the Apple Watch and the M7/M8 chip in the iPhone through HealthKit to track your steps.

What can I do with the MyFitnessPal Apple Watch app?

use step data from the watch to adjust your calorie goal for the day - walk more to eat more!

view your remaining calories for the day

view your remaining nutrient amounts for the day

view your steps and your step goal for the day

Known Issues

Exercises tracked as "Other" via the watch will not currently sync to the MyFitnessPal app. "Other" is a new HealthKit category, and the MFP app is currently unaware of this label. MFP for iOS version 6.1 will resolve this incompatibility.

The Nutrients view in the Watch app does not match our App store screenshots. This will be fixed in an upcoming release: Carbs, Fat and Protein will be moved to the top of the view.

If the Watch app is unresponsive communicating with the iPhone, exiting and re-launching the Watch app is usually enough to cause un-synced data to process. In some cases it may also be helpful to tap More > Sync on the MyFitnessPal iPhone app.

Only using myfitnesspal to log meals so that it can log nutrients in HealthKit. HealthKit right now is my goto to see quick glances of what macro or micro nutrients I'm missing.

Thank you - re-started the app on the watch and it synced again.

Still having problems - have to switch off the phone and reinstall the app for it to work - several times now.

Even though it's set correctly in both the iphone app and iphone watch app it reverts to getting the steps from the phone not from the watch - only a reset gets it to sync properly for the next 24 hrs - frustrating.

MyFitnessPal seems to be doing great with logging my steps recorded from the Apple Watch but exercises are not exported. In the Sources screen on the Health app I only see an option to allow for Steps to be selected, nothing for workouts/exercise. Is this normal behavior?

Had the watch about 6 hours and just got done with a few mile run at the gym and found the same thing. My steps from today are in there but the data in the Health App on my iP6+ is not making it into MFP.
