I can tell you my past beach experience and what I plan to do in the next month, where I will be around the beach for a month. And offer some suggestions.

If you're like me, and you want to use the Watch for more than exercise, then your iPhone will be nearby. 30 feet. So protecting the iPhone will go hand in hand with care of the watch.

My last day at the beach was mostly sitting in a beach chair. No problem just wearing the watch, phone inside my back pack. If I went into the water, watch goes off the wrist and into a hard eyeglass case, with a cloth to prevent movement inside. But normally someone stayed behind at the umbrella. Just as I would do for any watch or valuables.

Being that you will be in Mexico, you may not want to leave it unattended. So leave in in the hotel safe, unless you are in possession, like running with it.

With care, sand should be no problem, but be aware of it. Sand will scratch glass and metal. As people said, it's sandpaper, BUT you do need to apply some pressure, like sandpaper. So if you get some, blow or wipe the sand off gently.

One trick I do, is to wear an elastic tennis sweat band covering the watch. It hides it from eyes and sand, dirt. No sand should get underneath, but take care.

With precaution, you should be fine, the same precaution you might take with your eyeglasses, iPhone screen or wallet. Do rinse in fresh water and dry. It removes any salt spray and dirt. Pat dry. But if you plan doing all day water sports, leave it in the hotel.

But do take it! Many hours will be spent outside the beach, so have fun with it.

Enjoy your trip!
Viewfly, thank you, great recommendations. Love your idea to use tennis sweat band on top of the watch!

Have a fun vacation! Love Mexico.

I also use the thick Terry cloth band at the gym ( and for outdoor work). Protects against accidental bumps. And more convenient that my Spigen tough armor. That thing is a pain to put on/off. Never use it anymore.

Easy to peek at the watch's faceplate as needed. Wash often and keep it clean!

Got mine from Amazon prime.

Do you have voice and/or data in Mexico? If not, I'd leave it home just for that reason. Why allow for an Apple watch to get stolen when it's only serving the purpose of a cheap timex.

As for the beach, the tan lines, sunscreen, and sand are all good reasons against it.

I left mine in the hotel room when I went out on the beach to swim and lay out, I have the SS and was afreaid the sand would scratch the heck out of the case so I left mine in the room.

I think the concerns about sand are overblown. If you expect to wear your watch for any length of time and have it remain completely blemish free, then you're being unrealistic regardless of conditions. I can understand the concerns over the screen getting scratched, which is why I sprung for the stainless steel. Still unless you start grinding your watch directly into the sand, I think you'll be fine.

Since I got my watch in June I have worn it non stop regardless of what I was doing. This includes lawn work, such as mowing, trimming, and edging, as well as a couple of oil changes on the cars and countless workouts. The only time I took it off was when I was using a chainsaw, and that was mostly for safety concerns (I took my wedding ring off too). Between all of this the watch has been exposed to flying lawn debris, dirt, oil, water, and sweat. By far the most abusive activity has been the edging, which sends dirt and small pebbles flying right toward my wrist.

Despite all of this, my watch looks almost as good as the day I got it. Yeah there are a few scratches on the steel, but I have to be looking for them to tell they're there. And the screen is perfect. If my watch can survive the dirt that get flung at it by the edger I think yous will survive whatever stand your feet happen to kick up.

My wife used her 38mm space grey for last two weeks in Alcudia, she had one scratch on it very hard to detect, and only in very reflective light, my Omega POC has more wasabi:)

Do people actually wear a watch while sunbathing, thereby accentuating the watch tan line?
I wore my watch the whole time last week while I was in Philly & Ocean City (went to the beach 2 days). Picture doesn't render the tan line very well. But it's pretty intense!

...an old thread I know but an interesting discussion as I have this very same dilemma!!!!!

I'm off on a beach/swimming pool holiday soon and really undecided whether or not to take and wear my Series 4 Space Black Apple Watch?!!!!

I've worn it before on a beach and in the sea and it was fine (one or two days down at the coast) but wondering if it will sustain 2 weeks worth of constantly being used in a swimming pool!!!

I alway wear my watch while at the beach or pool. I alway take it swimming, even in big waves, or while playing in the sand with my son. I do wear a simple TPU screen protector. The only extra thing I do is clean it in fresh water at the end of the day. I did it with the series 3 and with the series 5 also. The Apple Watch can take it.

Seriously not sure what to do - leaving for two weeks Mexico vacation, obviously most of the time will be around water, should I bring my watch (sports edition) or do not even bother? I still plan to jog daily on the beach, so would be nice to see my circles filling up, but do not want to ruin the watch. So, apple watch lovers, what would you do?
Why wouldn't you take it with you? it is made to be used, in the water even. And in our universe there's this thing called entropy that affects everything and causes decay, ultimately rendering our attempts to preserve things kind of pointless.

Apple Watches are disposable tech. The battery will die and is not worth replacing. Throwing away a dead Apple Watch with a flawless case and screen will just make you regret the times you didn’t use it.
