No one is surprised by this. Electronics of any time with a very limited life cycle can never be a luxury item even if you wrap it in Gold.

Who would waste 10k on something that can only tell the time? It is 2016 people.

Crazy!
Well that is not actually true. Watches like Philipe Patek and top end Rolex can easily do so but they have a long tradition with producing Luxury mechanical watches.

Swiss watchmakers are in trouble says Apple’s Jony Ive

"Bartender, get me another round of that there Kool Aid" :D

Edited Jony's words having lazily copied and pasted the title of the article.

Just wait 'till Jony Ive makes the iWatch thinner ...

Btw., never understood why the battery is not integrated in the Watch Band? Presumably this would allow for higher battery capacity, and a "slimmer" main body of the iW.

Gee, if only someone could have predicted this!
[doublepost=1477143085][/doublepost]It was funny to watch the die hards around here try to explain why Apple had cracked the luxury watch business and Switzerland was in trouble. They'd make every excuse for why a person with money would instantly throw it away on a 10k+ Apple Watch for "status" reasons. Of course none of that ever happened and Apple has done now what it should have done at the start; focus on fitness.

They obviously didn't sell enough of them to make it worth while because they wouldn't have dropped the solid gold Edition from the range if it had been successful.

Oh, I agree that they didn't sell tons of them. I also don't think they planned to sell tons of them, though. I think it was an experiment.

I wonder how many boneheads at Apple thought the AW would succeed. This should be used as a litmus test to identify the "bozos" who should be fired immediately.

I know a millionaire who loves watches. He thinks the Apple Watch is a joke.

If he's heavy into high-priced watches, of course he does. Doesn't mean there aren't millionaires who love tech gadgets who didn't buy Apple Watches because they thought they were interesting pieces of tech. We see plenty of people here on MR who are presumably not high-rollers (but who probably make a decent living) that stick their noses very high in the air while strapping their Pateks to their wrists. No surprise with the watch-collecting crowd.

The apple watch is doing just fine. If it wasn't they wouldn't be bringing out more of them. It's still the best selling smart watch on the market. For me they are a must for any tech mad person where their phone is going off all day.

He's an Apple fanboy (since I've known him he's owned iphones, macbook pros (at least 4 in the last 10 years), Mac Pro (cheese grater edition), iPads, iPods, etc) and he loves watches; both cheap and expensive. His daily watch isn't anything fancy. He buys every Apple product and the Watch just could not interest him in any way.

FYI: I have the Apple Watch and I wear it almost daily

I doubt it's because he's a millionaire. That was more my point.

He didn't like any of them.

Soo... had he seen one he liked, he would've had no issue throwing money at the watch, which means the fitness/health aspects of the watch are not where he needs them to be yet to overcome his dislike of the style. This may change in time. :)

That's okay. They aren't for everyone. Even the Mrs couldn't care less for them. :)

There are 5 of us here (husband and three kids). Two of my kids aren't really interested. One didn't want one at all. The other got one, and she couldn't get used to something on her wrist all the time. My husband, our eldest, and me all wear them daily and have since the first gen launched. :)

So, it's absolutely not for everyone, but I don't think there are blanket assumptions to be made either way.

He actually finds the concept of a smart watch a joke... I'm just saying that just cause someone can afford one doesn't mean they want one. I don't think he will ever find a smart watch useful. I tried to show him all the cool features. But he really couldn't care less.

Love my Apple Watch Gen 0. With Watch OS 3 it's ASTONISHING.

So good in fact that it is actually stopping me from buying the Apple Watch 2 Nike Edition!

Very reasonable.

BTW, love your moniker! Fond memories of the bunnicula series despite it having been literally almost 30 years since I read them. If recall correctly, the semi-sleuth dog in them loved pancakes.

It was chocolate cupcakes, which is odd now because we know we cannot feed chocolate to dogs. :D

I loved those books as a wee kid, though.

Actually it looks like the cable is powering a lamp on the table which isn't present in the original photos of that table.

So they had a fairly easy job of photoshopping something which didn't exist.
There are lights along the edge of the glass in the second image and each Apple Watch is in a stand that also charges it, so the cable was still there.

If you think they're the same table... god help you.

The front and back tables have been switched.

Please read my reply carefully, I didn't say it was the same table. All tables, in all photographs require electricity. The top one we can clearly see the lights as you mentioned, the bottom front table has lights built into the display to show off the watch & charges the Apple Watch, and finally the table in the back of the second image also requires power to open the drawers that house the try-on units (the drawers are unlocked using an electronic key built into the mobile devices the salespeople have). Have you ever visited an Apple Store?
