People were smart enough to realize that the Apple Watch was a tech product that would be revamped over and over again with newer, faster technology, so spending $10K on one didn't make a lot of sense.

No to mention a $10,000 Apple Watch isn't the same terms in comparing to a Patek or Panerai Watch. A tech Watch isn't and will not hold value, because it's exactly that, a piece Of dated technology that will always be replaced by something bigger and better. Where as a vintage Swiss Watch will likely gain in value based on numbers produced, rarity or materials used.

Apple Watch made in China under questionable conditions. Not a luxury item. No place for it in Galeries Lafayette.

There's a brand in the Galerie Lafayette that makes their employees remove their factory tags because it says "made in china" on them. I'm not talking about some brand like Zara, I'm talking about a brand that sells fur coats for the price of one or two mac pros...
Apple is leaving because there isn't any custumors left since all the asian tourists are now afraid of terror attacks. Plus apple watch sucks.

normally you buy an expensive watch and you want it to last a lifetime.

watches, especially luxury ones, are supposed to be timeless objects, classical items

they're not supposed to run out of fashion eventually, like pretty much everything apple creates.

with apple though you can expect products to last like a year or two before becoming obsolete
(except if you buy macs then it's more like 5 years+)

that's why it's a flop

Their attempt to enter the luxurious world of watches failed so it's expected they need to do that...esp after they discontinue the Watch Edition....
The Watch Edition is not discontinued, it has changed material and certainly in price.
Anyway, pop up shops are just that, they pop up, and go - nothing new there.

I don't think there ever will be a decent market for smart watches. Considering that the Apple Watch apparently is the most successful smart watch out there and still doesn't shine with high sales figures, the whole trend will be over sooner than later and the devices will be focussed on fitness instead of an all around device for the wrist.

I don't think it is a flop at all, at the moment it is actually next to impossible to buy one in any Apple locations.
Of all so called smart watches it is still the winner. I do like your 'watches, especially luxury ones, are supposed to be timeless objects' sentence, it did make me actually laugh.

Maybe you're neiter Chinese nor a tourist then :p Both are a blessing to our economy.

No, German, but the cheap kind:) Fell for the credit card trap in USA and learned the hard way to change my habits.
Not into paying for brands when things all come out of the same factories only with different labels.
Best I can do as a tourist would be a T-Shirt or a cap, as long as it's under $ 20.
5 digit expenditures go for cars, even then only used.

My luxury spending weaknesses are for: beer, good food and maybe the occasional broadway show (when the girlfriend forces that), plus travel where I scoop up these tourist T-Shirts.

Yes, I am a disaster for the economy.

Did I mention: German, the cheap kind:)

Some will view this as "Oh the apple watch is garbage and no one want it!" I see it as a company with a pretty new product making business decisions

Did anyone ever see an Apple Watch Edition "in the wild"?

No because anybody who bought one would have to have been a raving moron. The Apple Watch is a giant waste of money at the best of times (I own one and it's never been useful), but the Edition took, "I have more money than I know what to do with and/or have absolutely no common sense" to the max.

That doesn't seem very accurate. But anyway.

It will be "poor sales" since Apple doesn't make the gold watch anymore...

That was sort lived. didn't even last a year..

From previous reports, Apple was excited about the Gold watch, they had a very different view.. But seemed like Apple ran before they could walk.

yeah sorry what I mean is they discontinued the gold and most expensive one, apparently it failed to sell, the new Watch Edition is priced less than 10% of the original one, this pop up stores were there mainly to sell the 10k+ model which Apple stopped making.

I wonder why? Could it have something to do with the high entry price of the base model, and nothing but wank value for the FOUR DIGET version of the same product? hmmm

No, these buyers are not price sensitive. The problem is the Apple watch just doesn't look that good no matter what it is made of. For $10k you can get a Rolex that looks much better. An for real luxury you would only buy Patek Phillipe.

They should have just stuck with a super cheesy gold plated Apple Watch with matching gold plated band that will turn green in 6 months. This would at least be cool in a cheesy way.

A cheesy exterior to match the inherent cheesiness of the AW is ironically more sincere and genuine than trying to dress up a crappy watch with real gold.

The initial problem was that Apple tried to market the watch as a highline fashion item.

It was cringeworthy when they flew in all of those celebs and fashion media when they launched the watch.

Now all of a sudden the watch is meant to be a sporty tech item and they have realised that it is not a fashionable item at all.

Hopefully now they can stop comparing watch sales to the likes of Rolex, etc
