No way. The difference between case size is more than 1/20th of an inch on each side. Or at least I assume it is. It would be nice if the cases fit together due to the center pin that you point out. But I doubt the difference is that subtle. ...
You didn't need to "assume". You could have looked up the case sizes easily. There's a "Size and Weight" section on each watch's web page. For example:
http://www.apple.com/watch/apple-watch-sport/silver-aluminum-case-white-sport-band/
The width is 33.3 mm or 35.9 mm. The difference is 2.6 mm, or just over 1/10 of an inch. So a wide band will stick out 1/20 of an inch on each side of a narrow watch. Which is exactly what kdarling wrote.

I'm going with the space black because honestly it's just the one I like the best. I actually kind of have an incentive to get the regular SS because of the better band selection but I just really like that black and I really liked the link band. I also tend to gravitate to black car interiors shoes and jackets so it will fit in well. I guess it's pricier but I could re use the link bracelet if I ever upgrade the watch so I don't mind too much. overall I don't think that's a bad price for a nice looking watch and the fact that I'll likely have to upgrade it is offset by the fact that I'll be able to re-use half the cost. Honestly though kind of depends how they really look in person I could be swung to SS if I like the look in person but so far it's been space black and going back and forth on what size I will get.

I get the argument, and you may well be right.

However

What if apple only ever sell each generation of watch with a band (ie don't sell second gen watches with body/face only, assuming you already have a suitable band). The space black may then also STILL only come with a link band at stupid money.

What will you do then?

Sell the watch with the band on gazelle or eBay and either upgrade or move on to something else just like I would with a phone.

What's the psychology behind your choice?

Although a bit verbose I enjoyed reading your post.

The psychology behind my decision _not_ to participate in the hype filled trial balloon known as Apple Watch is quite simple and exceedingly effective.

It may or may not be even more fraught with bugs, annoyances and frustrations than my iPhones 6 and 6 Plus.

Why should I give Apple any more money until they deliver a reliable crash free version of iOS 8? They've dropped the ball, failed to do what they do best (deliver a great experience) and gotten fat and happy with my money.

Thus by refusing to continue to feed Apple's obsession with profits, I vote with my closed wallet. Will that impact them? Heck no... There's a sucker behind me that'll just keep buying.

But it will save me from more frustration of buying a buggy watch that'll be obsolete and replaced by a far superior gen two product in mere months.

If it's a fad we'll know it.

If it isn't we'll know that too.

If by then Apple pulls a rabbit out of its backside and fixes iOS whatever so my phone stops crashing, Safari stops randomly reloading pages, then we'll have a useful phone.

Stay tuned cartoon lovers, Apple's about to provide quiet the show... WoooHooo

Ah, good point. It will be interesting to see if the different size bands will fit both size watches. I really suspect that they won't though.

The black Al watch comes with the black band only because the consumer that wants a black case (likely a male) wants something subdued. The regular Al case is a bit more conspicuous. Someone who wears it wants, or doesn't mind, to be noticed for what they are wearing; is likely more into fashion; wants colorful choices; probably isn't looking for something as mundane as a black band.

Apple could offer the black case with all the color band options but that's more SKUs, and higher cost. Apple likely did market research and decided the % of customers interested in a black case and also a colored band was so low that the cost efficient route was to have just one SKU for that color.

That's pretty much what I figured. That said, if I was buying the Sport, I'd want the regular aluminum and a black band. :)
