Hey everyone,

Need some advice. Just bought this S4 Space Gray 44 mm Apple Watch and I just noticed that it had this hairline scratch on the screen. I have no idea how this happened. Didn't hit with anything and I was very careful with it. Since I just bought it, do you think I can return it to the store? I have AppleCare on it too.

Just return it it’s your only chance right now. Once you are past 14 days you will be stuck with any scratches. Aluminum watches scratch super easy. It’s really annoying since they cost so much

Returning it should not be an issue within your 14 day return period. If you can’t Return it for any reason, use a screen protector and it will conceal the scratch.

Slightly unrelated: This is why I don’t care for the Ion-X Glass, I never cared for the durability, which is why I opted for the stainless model with the sapphire display.

I've had the S0 since launch and my screen is still in very, very good condition. Not a single scratch on the screen whatsoever. That's despite me wearing it daily, with little care for how it was treated.

Kinda makes your Ion-X Glass point... well, moot.

Not moot at all... just another data point. I bought an S0 in ion-x and it scratched the same day. Have had sapphire every generation since, and not a single blemish. Get what you pay for, and your lil bout off luck doesn't change that sir. ;)

Same thing happened to me. Took it to store after 1 day wearing and the manager said he’d make exception to refund or exchange it. He said it is cosmetic and normally wouldn’t be able to be exchanged but he made exception. But- the store was sold out of the o e I had plus my second choice. I don’t want cellular just gps in 44. So I have to hang on to it and watch to see if they have stock in before my 14 days are up. I may have to snag it online and pay for another one so they hold it. Go to store and get it- then explain I want to refund it and then swap it for my scratched one. So much trouble because store is out of stock! Manager that said he’d exchange it gave me his card and said to tell whenever I deal with that he okd it- if he wasn’t there when I go back. He said won’t be a problem as his word is gold.
I can’t risk going to another store because they may not exchange it because of scratch. How do I know if it was partly there and got bigger and then I noticed it? Maybe the costing was defective? I know maybe I hit it and scratch he’d it and just didn’t know. But after having it one day it’s gonna scratch that bad? Right down the middle?
Just have to hope the 44 space gray aluminum gps only comes into store this week!

If you care about screen scratches and get the aluminum model then you need a screen protector. The Ion-X glass scratches that easily.

couldn't find any screen protector for the new 44mm model on Amazon yet

Good thing I returned Aluminum and bought Gold SS. I put screen protector on aluminum but it was atrocious to slide the glass feels really cheap and took it off after a day.

I just returned my watch to the store yesterday. I just had a change of heart. I’m only saying this because when I returned it, the guy just confirmed that the watch was in the little gray protective casing and that the band was included. He didn’t inspect either. Just saying....

I'll go to the store tomorrow. Some this will work out. I'll say I changed my mind and want the silver lol. I don't mind changing the color for an unscratched screen.

Why would aluminum vs stainless steal make a difference for a scratched glass screen?

My wife’s new Series 4 got scratched too. We returned it and bought a new one. I want to buy the Zagg screen protector that they make for the series 3 but there is no series 4 size yet :-/

that's unfortunate. but apple has 14 day return policy that some people take advantage of.
Apple is a trillion dollar company that will keep making money.
If they decide their return policy is hurting their profit, they will discontinue it. But until then.... why not?

Yep, all my glass screens have developed scratches at some point. My only non-scratched screen is on my SS S3, but can't bear the markup anymore. Ordered an aluminum S4 :-O

I keep regretting getting the SG aluminum vs the SSSB(no scratches, but you all are making me paranoid). But I feel like unless I want to return it and wait another month to get a new one, I am out of luck.

Maybe I will just get the SSSB Apple Watch 5...

The space gray Apple Watch is still fairly durable, if really depends on your level of expectation when it comes to scratching and Scuffing. If you’re worried about the display, you could add a screen protector.

Maybe I will just get the SSSB Apple Watch 5...

You never know with Apple when it comes to certain colors and models, Space Black may not even be available for the Series 5 whenever that launches.

I've been wearing it for 3 years and bashed it more times than I can remember. Pretty sure that's not luck.

Sapphire is far more prone to cracking, so if you're someone who drops their watch regularly - glass may be the better fit.

Hi everyone, I got my Apple Watch Series 4 since launch day and noticed some minuscule scratches on the right side of the glass. They are very hard to notice, only from a specific angle when the light is right. I do feel them with my nail though and it's driving me crazy. According to the Apple Online Store I can return it until October 5th (within 14 days). Shall I do that? Will it be accepted by Apple? I don't have any experience with returning items to Apple. I would love to hear some advice, thank you!

Went to the Apple Store this morning with the excuse of wanting the cellular version instead. The dude I was with examined the watch and notice the scratch too. Didn't want to exchange it because of it. Called Apple Customer Care after and still no luck. This would fall under physical/accidental damage, which is not under the 14 days warranty, but under Apple Care with a fee.
