Those Apple engineers really worked overtime for the last year didn't they...
They’ve three of them and that’s why Apple always introduces three products on a keynote at a time.

Next year will be themed: what’s old is new again.

This, to give those poor engineers some relief. Timmy doesn’t wanna spend more on R&D to hire more engineers.

I'm still rocking the Series 4 and the battery health is down to 74%. If I just wear it as a watch, it's fine until I go to bed, but if I do any exercise I have to recharge around dinner time. Before the event, I told my wife I was planning to get the S10 if it had cool new features, if not I was going to get the S9 and save $100 or so.

I ended up getting the 10. The slightly larger screen, being able to play media through the speakers, slightly thinner and the rapid charge were enough for me to say it's worth the extra $100. I was shocked they're giving me $50 trade for the 4. I was expecting the "$0 trade, but we'll gladly recycle it for you!" message.

The same advice that applies to restaurants applies to Apple and every other business that sells products, to wit:
"If it ain't right, don't put it on the plate!"

I don't understand why sleep apnea detection isn't coming to the original Ultra. It's the same with playing media directly from the speakers... I'm sure the original Ultra is capable of both of those features.
Funny, I JUST got off a telehealth visit with my neurologist, who treats me for a sleep disorder. I've had two sleep monitoring sessions, one at home, and one at their sleep lab, which had radically different results. He told me that none of the sleep tracking apps on the market are close to being accurate. That includes the Apple Sleep app. So if Apple can't accurately measure your sleep cycles, it's a safe bet they can't diagnose sleep apnea accurately without an 8-12 lead helmet sitting on your head overnight. That is, if you can sleep at all wearing a tinfoil hat!

I have an Apple Watch S4 and was really looking forward to upgrading, but S10 is disappointing to say the least.
I'll just skip this generation again.
Sign up for Slick Deals notifications on the App because there have been some killer deals on Series 8 and 9's in the last month. I picked up a Stainless Steel Series 8 for 199 last week from Walmart and completely happy skipping the 10. What am I missing out on besides slightly faster charging and a slightly larger screen? Sleep apnea detection? There's already an app for that. High/Low tide tracking? Yeah there's an app for that too. The Series 8 still has a Blood Ox sensor, which I use for various fitness apps and cell connectivity hasn't changed since the series 4 really.
So yeah if you can find a deal on an 8 I think you'll be more than happy with the upgrade.

I had a sleep study done in my mid 20's. I paid 3 grand for the worst night's sleep I've ever had, because my ever so helpful insurance denied the claim AFTER pre-approving it before I went in, all to find out that no I didn't have sleep apnea just poor sleep hygiene and needed to be better about getting to bed at a decent hour and not laying in bed reading or watching tv before going to sleep.

I’m curious how often you actually use the blood oxygen sensor? I can see how it would have been useful back when Covid was in full swing, but now that the virus is attenuated and hypoxia is rare, I don’t see much use for it unless you have underlying lung disease like asthma or copd.

Or maybe it’s just a “I’ve got this feature and taking it away would be a downgrade” sentiment which I absolutely understand.
I think it’s used more as a warning feature, like heart rate too high or an afib warning which is one reason why I am keeping my S7. Even when I tell my doctor I am feeling fine with my annual check up, the nurse still checks my blood oxygen via the finger clip.

I have sleep apnea and have been in an ongoing battle with medical providers about it (thankfully, my symptoms reduced when I moved to sea level, but because of that I'm having insurance cover my equipment). Having my blood oxygen show up in AutoSleep or through the vitals has really helped me learn more about what makes my symptoms better or worse. I agree that most people don't need it, but for those of us with medical conditions it is helpful!
Is monitoring for sleep apnea available now? I was under the impression that this was only available for the new watches. My original post was referring to checking a o2 sat by the app, not sleep apnea monitoring.

I’m coming from an s4 and contemplating the same. May cancel my preorders and wait another year

My s4 is down to 67% battery health. Do you think it could last another year?

If you are happy with the features available on the S4 & you never have an issue where it is a must you need to put it on a charger, I say heck yeah.

I was hoping that the rumors were wrong and that they had figured out the blood pressure monitoring. If they had, I'd be the new Watch. I have a series 8 which is still running fine. I'd enjoy some of the new stuff from 9, and sleep apnea detection could be good... but not enough to upgrade the watch. Now, if they were to say that they definitely won't have blood pressure next year, I'd consider upgrading now. But... I'm hoping that by next year they'll have it figured out and I really don't want to upgrade the watch every year. I already spend too much money upgrading my phone every year because I have issues and it's my yearly splurge which makes 0 sense to do every year as it is.

I've generally upgraded the watch roughly every 3 years anyway... so I can wait. Blood Pressure monitoring will be the killer feature which will get me to pull the trigger and upgrade as soon as it's available.

Series6 owner here. Only reason I want to upgrade is to get to listen to audio (podcasts, music) directly from the watch speakers. Very useful for showers!
You cannot hear sh*t on AW speaker... I've tried it today on Ultra 2... blows hard

Pulse ox is the “5th vital sign” and is a pretty standard check whenever you go for an evaluation. I agree, I have the feature on my series 9 and don’t want it taken away with an upgrade.

Are there influential women on the Apple Design teams? Last year Apple introduced temperature measurements to help women monitor their period. At the same time, the size of the smallest AW was increased. This was already odd. Now, with the AW10, the size of the smallest AW was again increased. I don't understand why Apple would design options for women on the one hand, and design the watch such that it doesn't fit many women on the other hand. Is this men at the helm? Or ....

Note that when Apple introduced menstrual cycle tracking with the Series 8 in 2022 (not last year), there wasn't any change in the sizes of the watches offered -- 41 mm & 45 mm, just as with the previous year's Series 7. Last year's Series 9 also continued the same two 41 mm & 45 mm sizes. This year with the Series 10 Apple very modestly increased the breadth of the case sizes (now the two options are 42 mm & 46 mm) while at the same time making them thinner and lighter. I hear your frustration but feel this latest move is a reasonable compromise -- the case is ever so slightly larger yet also thinner & lighter, with a 9.4% larger screen size that displays more information and is easier to manipulate (sometimes even smaller fingers can struggle with the tiny buttons on any Apple Watch).

It's worth noting that the bezels of the current Series 10 remain somewhat thick. So, there's room for improvement. It's pure speculation right now, but given that Apple succeeded this year in reducing the bezel size of the iPhone 16 Pro (not a trivial engineering problem), it's very possible they'll deploy this same approach/technology to the Apple Watch in the future, perhaps next year. So if you are among the many who are sensitive to overall case size, maybe hang out for a while longer and see what the Series 11 brings us (theoretically, the same screen size in a smaller case, or an even larger screen in a case of the same size).

Apple's incessant misleading reiteration of mostly older features during the presentation really had my blood boiling for once.

They must have spent 1/3 to 1/2 of the entire Series 10 presentation going over everything that Watch has been doing for years and years.

Just get to Series 10 and stop wasting our time with facts that you've gone over in 4 other presentations.

If it's working for you--keep it. I really haven't felt like I've missed out on much by not upgrading sooner. But I really want the training load feature of the new OS and the 4 isn't getting it. That's one of the features that started me down the path of maybe it's time to upgrade.

I'm glad you were able to address the problem. Your life will be better for it. tip: never use a phone, tablet or laptop right before trying to sleep. The blue backlight tricks your brain into thinking it's morning.
