Apple Watch Series 3 models have entered the "final testing phase" in the manufacturing process, with mass production set to begin soon, according to a new Chinese-language Economic Daily News report [Google Translate].

The report, citing unnamed supply chain sources, said Taiwan-based manufacturer Quanta Computer will begin shipping Apple Watch Series 3 models to Apple in the fourth quarter, lining up with the smartwatch's widely rumored September launch, alongside new iPhones and possibly a 4K-capable Apple TV.

Apple Watch Series 2 models and slightly upgraded Series 1 models launched last September alongside the iPhone 7, so it's reasonable to assume that Series 3 models could launch this September as well. The original Apple Watch, now unofficially dubbed Series 0, launched in April 2015.

The rest of the report cites KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who recently claimed Apple Watch Series 3 will be available in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + LTE models in 38mm and 42mm sizes. Kuo said the cellular-enabled model will have an embedded SIM, but it might support VoIP calling only.

Apple Watch Series 3 models will also reportedly have improved performance and longer battery life, at least for the Wi-Fi-only version.

What's less certain is whether the Apple Watch will be significantly redesigned for the first time since being unveiled in September 2014.

Apple blogger John Gruber recently said he heard Apple Watch Series 3 models could have an all-new form factor, but he stressed that the tidbit came from an unconfirmed source who could be wrong. Kuo, meanwhile, said Apple Watch Series 3 models won't have any "obvious" form factor changes.

"It could also be that both my birdie and Kuo are correct," said Gruber, in a follow-up post yesterday. "The phrase 'will not feature an obvious new form factor' leaves a lot of wiggle room with the word 'obvious'," he added.

Few other details are known about the next Apple Watch at this point, and no components have leaked from the supply chain yet.

Apple has filed patents for a number of ideas that could eventually be included in an Apple Watch, such as a heart rate identification system, modular bands, haptic feedback band, and a band with a built-in charger. More significant health and fitness features could be added pending further FDA approvals.

That really great that after a long time there has been a concrete new about the apple Watch series 3
I was planning to buy the watch series 2 at this moment. Will it be good to wait for the new series ?
Considering it will be priced high.

As a Series 0 watch owner, the upgrade to LTE makes enough difference that I think it is worthwhile.

Disclaimer: This value assessment assumes that it doesn't cause wrist cancer.

I wonder if they will offer a series 3 without LTE connectivity. Or sell new series 2 watches with the spec bumps the series 3 will get. Would be nice to have a non LTE option like with the iPads.

Great. This means the series 2 will be cheaper. No need to pay for a seperate cell connection on a watch. Maybe this will coinvince me to purchase one.

Wake me up, when the battery life will be at least 5 working days.

I doubt this will happen any time soon, or perhaps ever. Every time a product is made, features are going to be balanced. For example, right now you can buy a smartwatch with more than 5 days of battery life, but it has an e-ink display. Apple chose a richer, more responsive display over better battery life.

There are others, too. If Apple wanted to build a bigger watch, it could also increase battery life. Apple could also make the display not turn on with a wrist raise to increase battery. They could remove GPS from the Series 2, and never add cell service to the watch. Apple is not making these choices because they value the features over the battery life. By not buying competing smartwatches, people are also making that choice.

I expect for the foreseeable future, battery life isn't going to stretch much beyond a full day because there are so many cool features to add. For example, it would be awesome to stream music without a phone during a workout. I'd love to make and receive calls without my phone (via Airpods). Same with getting email and texts without a phone. I'd like apps to run faster and independently of the phone. I'd like to be able to use Siri to control my smarthome stuff without a phone. The Apple Watch has a big emphasis on fitness, too. There are a lot of sensors that could be added the watch, and the sensors could be used for longer periods. The watch itself could also be smaller in thickness, have a brighter display, and louder speaker.

I expect that Apple values all of these features more than 5 day battery life.

I hope Apple will focus more on fitness with Series 3, always on time display (probably in black and white to save battery) and can we have a glossy Apple Watch Sport option please?

Nokia managed to do a glossy look with their latest smartphone and it doesn't look bad

Am I the only one ultra disappointed with Apple Watch?!
I have series 1, it's always been super slow... 80% of third party apps take a good 30 secs to launch (if ever) making it unusable...

I find it useless overall. It pains me to think how much I spent on this useless gadget!

The only thing I ever liked about it was the fitness feature the first few months I bought it, after which I got annoyed to even go through the UI to start a workout.
I also like receiving text messages on there, but that's about it.

What do you guys think of Apple Watch overall?

I use mine day in and day out. I use the messaging features. I use it to filter only my most important clients. I use the calendar field on the face so I know which conference room I am going to next. I use the fitness features for running and cross training. I use apple wallet. I could go on and on....

What I want from an Apple Watch 3:
  • Bigger face option (46-48mm)
  • Round style option (I like round watch faces, have always had them until Apple Watch, they could keep the app area in the center and use the full circle for watch faces)
  • Louder speaker volume for taking calls (I don't take many, but it's annoying when I can't hear people when I take a quick call on the Watch like when my hands are full in the store)
  • Faster loading with 100% locally stored and loaded apps (so it would also need more than 8GB of storage)
  • Improved haptic feedback that is less likely to degrade over time
  • Better display contrast in bright light
  • Improvements to the motion sensors that detect if you're moving your wrist to check the watch
Some might say it needs LTE, but I don't really need LTE if it can just tether the data plan from my iPhone and/or use WiFi. But an LTE option would be welcome for those who need it.

Louder speaker for sure. Local apps? Kinda thought they were now but sure. Definitely needs more storage and much better music mgmt. Facetime. LTE. Faster Siri. Phone app.

Please... Sapphire glass for the aluminum model. Hopefully Apple has realized that many consider Alum to be actually preferable to the steel.

Love my series 2. Awesome battery life as well, much better experience than my Moto 360.
What I want Apple to put is the ability to scroll up/down notifications by flicking my wrist. The Moto 360 has this feature. It allows me to see what notifications there are without having to use my other hand.

Other than that, maybe more durable paint/anodization. My series 2 was chipping without much use. Luckily Apple replaced it.

I have the original apple watch in SS, and this is probably one of the few devices where I have felt zero need to upgrade based on what the upgrades have been. While it was not advertised as waterproof, I have been swimming with mine since launch day.

I know people use it for fitness tracking, but it was always just for notifications for me personally. I am trying to decide if the lack of significant updates is a good thing or a bad thing. I am actually starting to grow tired of it =/

Your point is what? That you need to exercise?

My iPhone 7 is always with me. My Apple Watch Series 2 never gets below 60% battery by midnight when I charge it and I wear it from 7AM to midnight daily swimming, showering, working on my car, doing yard work and it's insanely fast and I can do a lot of stuff while keeping my phone in my pocket.

I'm not certain LTE Inclusion will be enough to get me to upgrade, neither will 2x speeds. The Series 2 is so perfect already. My GF's Series 0 on the other hand is in desperate need of an upgrade even with Watch OS 3's speed improvements.

My series 0 was dead by 4pm yesterday.

....

30 secs is quite a long time... I sometimes have delays launching some 3rd parties apps, sometime several seconds maybe on series 0.

Have you tried comparing the same 3rd party app on another Apple Watch (say a friend's Apple Watch)?
What kinda apps are these (if you are comfortable with discussing)? Are you pairing it with an older iphone or newer iphone?

I just wish they'd offer an option for a longer woven nylon band for my Series 1 -- I always thought I had small wrists until I tried the one-size-fits-all band and had to return it.

There has to be some more incentive to buy a Series 3 than just better battery life and faster CPU for those who have no interest in LTE.
I'd like to see sleep tracking (perhaps combined with superfast recharging to enable wearing it overnight) and an always-on watch face.

Rumored September launch? Or definite September launch? Just wondering cause if it’s definite, I may put my watch up for sale this month. Rather than when the 3rd Apple Watch goes on sale, so I don’t lose any money by waiting too long.

What interesting times with Apple Watch.

Will purchase this time next year with the latest iPhone if the Watch has matured in its features and functions. Perhaps WiFi and eSim. Who knows?

I also have a version 0 SS... still happy with it. GPS and greater water resistance was nice, but not enough to upgrade. To me, LTE is the holy grail. Not to make calls, though handy in a pinch. If in some circumstances I could just leave my phone at home and head out with my watch and know that I can remain connected for texts and emails.. that would be perfect. Disconnect without completely isolating myself. No big phone, no social media, no phone calls, but able to get important messages...Perfect.

Sounds like you need a pager.
