I had a Series 4, which I eventually gave to my dad and he still uses. Still going strong. Now, was it just me, or did they make them disappear as soon as the Series 5 hit? I remember thinking oh I’ll get another one at a good price but they seemed to have vanished (besides the used market) and only the 3 was still for sale.
This is correct and not just for the Series 4.

When the Series 1 debuted alongside the Series 2, the year old 1st Gen aka Series 0, was dropped. So far only Series 1, 3 and SE have remained in the Apple Watch lineup for over a year (unless I’m missing something). The other previous models have been discontinued as their successor arrived.

Series 4 was notable due to a new design so a lot of us thought as you did, but Apple had other plans.

They also did this with the iPhone X when the XS was announced, and with the Pro/Pro Max/Mini models of the iPhone 11 and 12.

On the plus side, the new SE launching this month is expected to have an S8 chip, which is a huge jump from the current Watch SE.

Nope, they even pushed it as a fantastic deal when I was at the store earlier this week.
Speaking of good deals I was searching Amazon and found this.

$229 for an SE with cellular seems great even if you don't use that feature. If the SE had the always on display I would buy it but it's not for me.

I would be worried that people are buying this because of the price and aren’t aware of its obselesence.

The only people that would care about it being "obsolete" would know already that WatchOS9 won't be supported and wouldn't be buying it. The majority of people don't know or care what OS is running on the device.

Why not? Not everyone needs or wants the latest tech. If you just want a tap on your wrist when you get a text or to record your workout then it's fine. I'm still using my Series 4 and I suspect I'll get another two years out of it. Yes I also have a Series 6 because depending on what I'm doing. The only difference I notice is battery life and the always on display but other than that they work the same. The Series 4 still gets me through the day but on a long day it's close. Maybe the battery is aging.
There's always the SE if you don't need the latest and greatest. My first Apple Watch is the SE and I couldn't care less about AOD and ECG. The SE is perfect for a lot of people.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think keeping older hardware around for purchase tarnishes the brand and creates unnecessary confusion for the customer.

They should stop selling the older models and swap them out for the newer ones. Sell a more affordable product line like the iPhone SE & Apple Watch SE, that makes sense.

I agree. The 2012 Macbook Pro is another example. It wasn't marketed as 2012, just appeared to be a more affordable model.... that also couldn't run much of anything without endless spinning beach balls for years before it was killed, which was only somewhat recently.

If you weren't a tech nerd or didn't google the model number, you'd just think Apple made a **** product.

I made the mistake of buying that model the first year it had a price cut and barely got a year out of it before updates started to slow it to an almost unusable state. There was no excuse to sell that model for as along as they did.

I think the Apple Watch SE was produced after and at that point Apple realized to make a different version for those on a budget. They kept the Apple Watch series 3 because they could sell it cheaper and a lot of people either don’t want to spend the money or can’t afford a more expensive model. You have some people that feel well if you can’t afford it then too bad but that’s a bit elitist and the worst attitude of some in the Apple community. There are people in countries where the wages are significantly lower than places like the USA. In the USA most people can spend $400 without too much thought but in some countries that might be multiple months salary. Even if it is an inferior product compared to the more expensive version it allows people to have an Apple Watch that normally couldn’t afford one.

I suspect Apple will make a new version of the SE somewhere closer to the price of the series 3 it’s replacing.

For kids wanting an Apple Watch, the series 3 is more than capable and very cheap. It makes sense.
Agreed. I picked up one for the niece last Christmas when they were going for around $100. It works really well for her use. Honestly, it would work really well for my use most of the time. I felt it was a good option to see if she really would wear the Watch. I would have to have spent much more for something that ends up in a drawer.

You don’t have the ability to return the purchase?

Honestly, I had the original, S2 and the S4. First one is unusable. S2 was only GPS for me. The S4 is plenty smooth, snappy, mine is cellular.. honestly don’t need anything else. It keeps up with my iPhone 13PM no problem, and other than apple restricting my wallpapers which is a dick move by them, this watch feels like it has a long time left in it.
Not supporting would be anti environmental as far as I’m concerned because it does everything I need.

Lol. I cannot believe they were still selling this. Jesus . We're about to be on Series 8 and Apple really out here selling the Series 3.

Nah. They’ll keep the 3 around for $199 like they have for the last six years. 🙄

I am very disappointed in apple for selling this product for so long and dropping annual update support for it.

Apple should have stopped selling this version at least a couple years ago.

Apple is doing a great job providing security updates for old products for a very long time but they kinda screw recent Apple Watch 3 customers by locking them out so soon after purchase.
