if they made a cheap plastic one with long battery life i'd buy one

None of Apple products are made cheap and the watch should have an aluminum housing at minimum for durability. And with the current Series 3, you can easily two days of battery life or longer depending usage/settings.

As a new AW3 GPS owner... what would interest me in the AW4?

A custom watch face that I can put together.
The ability to leave the time always on kind of like the current Samsung flagships do.
Longer battery life (even though I'm super happy with my AW3 ending a day at 83-85%).
The ability to charge my watch with any wireless charger because I have them all over the house for my 8+.

But I'm an AW newbie so ... I purchased AppleCare+ for this thing and I really expect to use it 2+ years. The 1000 charge cycles is just frigging awesome. Should easily last 2 years. :)

Faster of course.
Starts to become thinner.
Some changes to case design and material even on the lower end, beyond just color.
Higher resolution screen.
New sensors for health including improved optical HR tracking every single second 24/7.
Same basic shape and will use older bands.

I think the watch is more than fast enough as it is, but naturally it seems Apple Increases it's processors every iteration with the new release. As far as thinner goes, I don't necessarily see that happening with all the technology they currently have incorporated, unless they reduce the nanometer process.

I do see the Apple retaining the band port, implementing a larger display option, offering new casing materials aside from the aluminum and stainless, and maybe some new innovative bands that might be battery powered as rumored in the past through patents.

Wishlist:
  • Faster processor
  • Bluetooth 5 for being able to be apart from iPhone 8/X at a longer distance.
  • Tiny bit bigger screen (it currently has a big black bezel - but because its OLED and the UI has a black background it's not too noticable.. but the screen could be quite a lot larger but keeping the same form factor)
  • Compass for Maps

This... I'm sure will make it so that the screen wraps fully around or make the bezels very very thin eventually... hopefully soon...

LTE has been the best improvement so far in my opinion, but $10/mo is just ridiculous. I'd also like to see support for more music streaming services. I guess neither of these are really hardware dependent. The Watch has been more than "fine" since Series 2.

For me I certainly hope they improve the touchscreen sensitivity with damp/moist hands while working out. Maybe they improved it on the S3 but I'm on SS series 2 and it pisses me off to have to tap tap tap or get a towel to dry my hands when I'm working out to use the watch.

That’s an issue with touching any touch display with moist or wet hands, not just the Apple Watch. Also, how do you know they improve the sensitivity on the Series 3 over the Series 2? Is that anecdotal or did you read or confirm that somewhere?

I have a solar powered watch -- just ten minutes of light and it will run for weeks. I realize that the power demands of a smart watch are greater, and that the technology to make smart watch screens capable of harvesting light energy is probably a ways off, but having a solar-assisted power system would be tremendous.

But I would question the differences of how much power draw action is required for the Apple Watch in terms of the display, heart rate sensor, haptic engine, etc. All those require likely _more_ battery draw from a lithium ion battery that would drain a solar powered watch at a rapid rate. Of course, that’s just an educated guess, but obviously there is difference between solar and lithium ion batteries as a whole.

The battery would be the same li-ion, I think, it would just get a boost from solar power to extend times between charges. It may be that the solar contribution is too small relative to what the watch needs to warrant messing with it.

I had an automatic watch... imagine kinetic energy was enough to get your smartwatch going! Complete your Excercise Ring for another full day’s charge!
