Definitely not ceramic...
Probably stainless steel or titanium, but keep in mind that steel will show scratches more because the steel finish is smooth and the titanium finish is brushed.
(Both of those come with sapphire glass, I believe.)

I had a black ceramic series 3. I then had a stainless series 4 and also an aluminum series 4 ( did this to get ecg in Canada).

Here’s what I know from my experience:

Ceramic is just about scratch proof if you are a big guy who bangs into things a lot, ceramic is great. Pricey though!

Stainless was good. Held up fine - nearly as good as ceramic.

Aluminum is great because it’s cheaper, but I do have some “paint” chips around the bezel sort of. And the crystal is cheaper glass maybe? I have some scratches I think. Never had that with ceramic for whatever reason. Space grey aluminum.

Anyways since I get the new one every year, let it wear. I almost got another aluminum, but ended up ordering space grey titanium.

I’m happy they are including the sports band because that’s what I’m using right now although I do have a lynx stainless bracelet in the drawer but it’s a bit heavy but it’s a very nicely made bracelet - I might pull it out again, but mainly the sports band is awesome - looks like new despite my abuse.

So, what happens if you buy an Aluminum or Steel Apple Watch outside of the Apple Store? You just don't get a band then?

I'm torn between the dark Titanium model and the Gold Stainless Steel model. I really dig the look of the gold stainless but I'm not a fan of heavy watches. Can anyone comment on the durability of the gold stainless models?

That would be cool. Maybe I shoulda got the gold stainless. I don’t remember seeing gold stainless before - maybe that’s just me - I never look at these watches at Apple stores etc because I always order them first day. So I guess I miss out on the fashion of these things.

We've only ever purchased aluminum watches in our immediate family (of 4) and have been pleasantly surprised at their durability across several age groups. 7 watches, all series and sizes, I don't think we would find value in spending more on different cases, but more options are great for all different walks of life, use cases and needs.

It bothers me that the SS comes with either sport loop or Milanese. Pretty sure the SS is too heavy for sport loop. Yes, I know you can choose other bands, but choosing a different band will cause shipping delays and stores like Best Buy most likely not have the 'choose your band' option available.

My original stainless steel watch had no problems with the sport band. I would wear that playing tennis and running on the treadmill.

I think the scratches are in the coating, not the sapphire itself.

(Not saying I disagree with your point — I think it’s ridiculous that my $1100 phone has scratches all over the display despite the fact that I baby it)

I do not think you know the meaning of the phrase "I baby it". My iPhone X display is scratch free. I wouldn't say I baby it but I don't put it in the same pocket as anything else (except sometimes my AirPods).

Any details on the s5 chip? I haven't seen a thing so far and was under the impression this was basically a Series 4's CPU?

Apple quotes the S5 as being 2x as fast as the S3, but I think that was what they quoted the S4 as. Main improvement seems to be the wireless part where they've added more LTE bands for the S5.

Pretty sure the SS is too heavy for sport loop.

I've had my SBSS on a knock-off Nike+ sport loop for several months. Works just fine. Including running. It is in no way "too heavy for sport loop".

Really, the 47.9g SS case weight vs 36.7g aluminum case weight difference isn't as much in actual usage as the numbers on paper might make you think. (I had a Nike+ AW4 and changed to the SBSS)

Ah yes, the good old “I know nothing about your circumstances or situation or device but you must be doing it wrong” — a classic MR reply haha!

On the contrary, it sounds like I “baby it” more than you. I never put it in a pocket with ANYTHING else. Not money, not AirPods, not a plastic credit card — nothing!

But sure, I must not know what I’m talking about because you don’t experience the exact same problem.

Wow....frankly at those prices it should include every color sport band with it. But an extra one is nice.

If you peruse Apple.com (not the Apple Store app) You can get to some fairly vague specs if you find the ‘Compare Apple Watch Models’ section. The Series 5 claims the chip is an ‘S5’ but I have a feeling there are very minor improvements over the S4 chip this time around but I could be wrong. For all we know they just slapped an S5 logo on the chip and called it a day but I have a feeling Apple will take what they’ve learned from the power saving algorithms and hardware they developed for the the A13 chip and apply those to the next Apple Watch processor with WatchOS7. This has the potential to significantly improve the Apple Watches battery life.

Some have speculated that the chip differences are power efficiency related, and potentially also a smaller size allowing room for the storage bump and other "stuff" -- yet without any real performance change to tout in the marketing.

It will be interesting to see if the battery life compares between S4 & S5 if it's possible to disable the always-on display.

We'll find out for sure once iFixit rips it apart.

The glass is the weakest part... so I wouldn’t care what’s stronger: stainless or titanium. Not sure about ceramic one. But glass will break in the first place.
But only the aluminum has glass. The other models use a sapphire crystal. I’ve had every watch series since it launched. I have dropped from chest level (by accident) every watch onto the hard floor. Not even a nick or scratch on sapphire. My wife had a aluminum model with glass crystal. Shattered the first time it dropped on a hard surface

I wonder if the pin on the included Sport band is Ti or just the standard pin (for the Ti model)?

Ok, but there’s a drop test on YouTube and glass survives it while sapphire breaks. In any case the “glass” be it a sapphire or a glass is still the weakest part. If something will break that’s it, not the metal body.

I actually ended up ordering the Black Stainless Steel Series 5 because of the DLC diamond coating they give it at the factory. From what I've read it makes the Black Stainless model more scratch proof than the standard Stainless Steel or even the Gold version which uses a different coating process (PVD). You can read more about it at the link below...

There's also a lengthy MacRumors forum discussion about it here also...

Just noticed that just like the Hermes models you don't get both sport band sizes on the extra band. Looks like 40mm is s/m only and 44 is m/l only.

Will there be watched available in store on Friday the 20th if you didn’t pre order?

Yeah - to be fair, it should be titanium. But I really doubt if it will be. On the other hand, maybe that’s why they include it because it is titanium.

I say it should be because we are paying the big bucks to get the titanium so that we can be impeccable and not have scratches and so forth - supposedly anyways. I’m looking at my sports band that I really like and there is a lot of wear on that pin - it’s shiny like a pop can. I am currently wearing a aluminum series 4
