My question is how does the international sos feature work when the Apple Watch doesn’t allow international roaming.

When you leave your home country your Apple Watch will not roam. But In order for it to call 911 or whatever variant the country your in has. It would have to connect to cellular when your away from your phone. Is Apple gonna allow roaming finally and the carriers allow it

In many states in the USA, even cell phones not on a plan/carrier can actually still make 911 calls. There’s some restrictions that I can’t recall right now (like I think the phone still needed a SIM card or something else)

perhaps Apple is able to tap into that similar type of service everywhere?

This will be my first Apple watch. I have owned a gear s3 and Huawei watch GT but since I'm going back to ios this year a Apple watch seemed necessary.

I don’t even know why Gruber reviews Apple Watch as he rarely wears one. He’s clearly not a fan, which is perfectly fine. Does he feel he has to review every product Apple releases?

Bohn also admits his long-running desire for an always-on screen

John Gruber says that the always-on display "solves my single biggest complaint about Apple Watch since day one.

I had two complaints, one being the lack of the AOD, and another was the price.

The S5 solves the AOD, and the S3 now solves the price issue.

I was going to wait for holiday sales to see if I could get the S3 for even cheaper, but maybe I might just put it off for another few years, and wait for the S5 to drop its price.

I went from anS0 to an S2, and now to the S5. The compass (I get disoriented uptown sometimes) is a big deal for me along with the always-on and ECG feature. I can't wait for Friday.

Definitely happy I picked up an Series 4 last week. The price was perfect and there really aren't enough features for me to sink over 500 bucks into the watch that I would need for a Series 5.

I am happily skipping this version. My 4 is going strong and unless I don't want to move my arm at all a little tilt of the arm turns the screen on so the AOD is not relevant to me. Compass??? Yes, that is Tim Cook's example of innovation because I get lost all the time. Oh and BTW I checked for fun how much Apple would pay for my looking new 4 with LTE that I paid $549 last year and they would give me $100 for it. No tks!!!!

I am upgrading to the Apple Watch 5 Series from the 4. I need the always on feature but I also think Apple may include an update in the near future only for Series 5 that won't translate to previous versions ... who knows if it will happen but they could do some software update to encourage more users of previous models to upgrade ...

I also expect to get at least $450 + for my current SS LTE version with Melanese Loop on Craigslist to offset the difference in price, like I did last year from the Series 3 to the Series 4.

I think this is doubtful until the new WatchOS number series. Series 4 and 5 are going to be seen as very similar for some time. I bet that most features coming to the 5 will go to the 4 simply because there is little difference. The Series 5 will last longer, of course, due to its newer processor.

Being able to sell my Series 44mm for half of the new watch was a main reason for me upgrading as well!

I'll wait for Series 4 replacement inventory to become constrained, go in to get a battery replacement on my S4, and be upgraded to the S5 at a nominal cost. Happened with the Series 2 and 3 already.

I am not a huge fan of the Apple watch but I bought one (4) to be independent of my phone and to be contactable (sometimes required on in my job) when I go to the swimming pool with my daughter.

The biggest downside of the watch, was actually the watch part, IMHO. As a watch, the Apple Watch is a failure. Display can't be read just with a quick glance and you need to move your arm for that. It gets old very quickly. Especially when you do sports it's a pain in the a..

So an AOD is huge. I rather have a functional watch then to know about what time the sun sets in Timbuktu.

I agree that the new "always on" feature is nice and I look forward to getting that and whatever else Apple adds next year to the AW S6. Until then I am keeping my AW S4. While I normally update my phone every year, I find that I am keeping my watches longer and usually upgrading every other year. The S4 was a huge upgrade from the S2.
I’m going from an S0 to an S5. Kinda stoked!

I am upgrading from a series 0 so anything will be welcome change iol
Me too! The series 0’s internals haven’t aged well in my opinion. What was I expecting from a first gen Apple product though? It’s the SS version so it still looks amazing though.

I'm primarily interested in the speed of the S5 processor. Is it as fast as an iPhone 6s now?

I love my Apple Watch 4, but I really found the display to be annoying. Trying to auscultate anything that isn’t sedated forces my hand to turn the watch ventrally and the screen would turn off. The 4 was supposed to have a feature that allows you to tap the screen to get 70 seconds of on time but it still turns the display off right away if it thinks you are done looking at it.

I wish always on was an option for older devices, even if it was just a toggle for when I needed it.

As with all the iPhone 11 reviews, the reviewers have focused on the value of an upgrade. They fail to take into consideration those who don't have the money to upgrade every year and have older tech.

I currently have a Series 1 and it's lasted since September 2016, with no signs of it dying anytime soon. But the health features added to the Series 4 -- ECG, fall detection -- are important to me; however, the price was a factor since my watch was only 2 years old. I'm now ready to upgrade. I could shave off some money by getting a Series 4, but I'm paying a little more to get the latest version with the hope it will also last another 3 years.

Yet a few days ago we had an article stating that Apple has confirmed on their own website that some of their own watch bands with magnets can cause interference....

Since watch bands tend to be stuck to the watch rather than "spinning around" them, one presumes this is the difference between an everpresent magnet (causing interference) and an introduced magnet... it sounds more like a party trick, in all honesty, rather than a real headline "feature".
