I've gotten into a groove where I upgrade to the newest AW whenever it incorporates new sensors. Rectangular or rounded doesn't really make a hell of a difference to me. So I'm on the AW6 right now. Regarding it, anyone else have glass scratch problem with AW6 or AW7? I always buy the cheapest AW, but never had a scratch issue with previous AWs, but my 6 has gotten pretty noticeable ones since I bought it - and god knows, I haven't been that active during covid :-(
I found the glass durability tanked between 3 > 5. My 3 was spotless, 4 wasn't as good, 5 was bad.
I went with a SS/sapphire for my 7. Joke's on me.

Joining the "I don't like this, personally" crowd. I guess maybe I could change my mind once the thing's released and looking at actual product images but based off these renders and my own preferences I don't love it...It'd have to be reallly thin to work imo
AGREED! It would have to be very thin to look nice, otherwise it would look like a block! Maybe only on the rugged model.

One issue with this. Think back to when Jeff introduced Series 7. ”Subtle wraparound effect” was a talking point of the display. They even made a watch face that was meant for that “wraparound effect”. Going to a flat display would be a step backwards.

It's that time of the year again. The time where the flat edged redesign rumors start popping up.

Like it or not, the S7 was a redesign. Apple could pull a fast one a redesign the S8, but historically they have only made small design language changes to the AW, and on a ~3 year cycle:

S0 -> S3 (2.5 years): 42mm
S4 -> S6 (3 years): 44mm
S7: 45mm
I'd argue the Apple Watch has never undergone a redesign.

You can take my Series 0 SS 42mm and set it next to a Series 7 SS 45mm and hardly notice a difference. I doubt most "man on the street" observers would be able to tell you which is which with the display off.

I think it's a timeless design. The new Google watch is copying the design, but round.

Agreed, unless, as others said, it is for a "rugged" model--in which case I not only expect a flat display, but a display with a slight lip around it to make it less likely to shatter upon impact.

It looks great, but I'm worried about durability. Sharp edges tend to get dented and chipped, and lord knows I'm way too clumsy as it is already. Hopefully it's as durable as the rounded design.

I think this flat edged design for the Explorer Rugged Apple Watch. And the rounded design will continue with the standard S8

A thinner watch is what I want. Not a watch with a chunky flat edge.

Not a fan of these mock-ups.

Prefer the current design language. A refined version of the existing design would be better. Make it thinnnnnner please.

The mockups have always looked great. Clean minimalist design. I have never seen the current one look good on anyone regardless of the band. The functionality is what keeps me using it, but it is goofy and ugly as sin.

Personally, I think something went wrong last cycle and the S7 we have now was a backup plan. I’d be willing to bet that we’ll see a dramatic change in the design and features this year, since the S7 was so incremental.

Great - that will look better, even digitally (especially with analog faces)

Round simply looks more elegant and stylish.

Watches are fashion accessories for a lot of folks.
That’s simply not true: Most other big brands have made round smart watches and they look markedly less elegant than Apple Watch even though Apple Watch isn’t as elegant as it could be.

It mainly comes down to the thickness of the Watch and how much the semi-spherical sensors on the back make it protrude from your wrist.

Apple Watch is the best compromise in terms of aesthetics and functionality -The curved edges do a decent job at hiding how thick it actually is. This is especially true when it’s not worn on the wrist as you don’t really grasp how much the sensors protrude on the back until you wear it on your wrist.

But it would be far better looking if it was a good chunk thinner overall.

Simply keeping the same overall mass of Apple Watch and just making it round wouldn’t make it more elegant looking.

Apple Watch would be just as elegant as an analog watch if it was as thin as one.

I would take new health sensors over a new design any time.

There were rumors about adding : blood pressure, blood glucose, hydration, alcohol, sleep apnea... this is what I want to see and what will make me upgrade.
Agree. A new design really wouldn’t make it a better Apple Watch except maybe if it increased durability significantly (I doubt it. S7 is also durable enough).

Even the bigger display on the S7 is quite boring to me even if it is better looking than S6 and older.

Apple Watch is a health tracker first and foremost so new, cutting edge health sensors are the most important upgrades.

I don't think Apple will abandon the current wristband design. The current wristbands are conformal to the watch body, and pointed down hugging the wrists. You simply can't have watchband projecting straight out of the side like in the current flat sided bento-box style rumor renderings. Apple is kinda stuck with the current profile at the band/case joint. My prediction is that the case remains the same.

Do so many actually prefer the more square design?
I really love the more rounded design on my S6, it does not get stuck in clothes and is comfortable to wear.
I don't know if there's so much a preference as a desire for change. I mean the Series 0 and Series 7 don't look all that much different. But at the same time, it is a solid design that still looks good. Maybe able should consider doing a flat-sided design alongside the "classic" design? Who knows?

True.
There are different styles of iPhones, why can't there be different lines of Apple watches.

i just want better battery life at least so I don’t have to charge for 2-3 days. I literally just use my apple watch for notifications and keeping track of my excercises activity
