Isn’t the 8 battery life more than 18 If you have always on display off
I have the 7, and I get without fail a day and half of battery life. I do have the always on display off, and it works flawlessly and screens lights up when I turn my wrist towards me. No sense in wasting juice if the watch is not being used while your arm is at your side etc. That's good news for the Ultra which should give me, or others that ordered it, at least 3 days of use. The 8 should give you a day and half as well!

I think I should buy that Apple Watch Ultra to use for my Starbucks runs while wearing my Patagonia or Arc'teryx hoodie since most who will buy it will use it exactly for that purpose.
I wouldn't assume that, as most who like myself who have purchased the ultra I believe, are in that niche group of outdoor enthusiasts who do trail run, hike, climb etc., and will use it. Your comment can be used for iPhone purchases as well? I suspect you do not and many do not use many or all of the functions that it offers and yet we still buy them??

It’s slightly wider and taller than the 8 screen. I’m hoping the extra 14 pixels of width matter for things like using the keyboard for text, etc.
In this simple comparison (see swapped outlines orange on S8 and red on Ultra), seems negligible difference in actual visible area

I wish the always on display was a toggle in the control center. The primary purpose of the always on display (IMO) is for fashion.

Not a big criticism, but I would appreciate if the articles that have popped up lately comparing two devices would list a table, where you can see the same feature side by side.
When you look at the article (at least in desktop mode), the same feature does not match the same row between both devices. It only gets worse as you scroll down the list, and becomes difficult to really compare, which is the purpose.
I thought exactly the same, why not first compare the same items and then add what one has and the other doesn't?

Ew, Starbucks. I'll be going to some small independent cafe for mine....

But I'll also be wearing it for The OMM at the end of October in the Lake District. Looking forward to not needing to carry a battery pack - on these multi day races where you have to carry your kit, every gram counts.

I agree with you a toggle would be good? to each their own, though unless you are looking at your watch every minute of the day, there isn't a need to have the always on display active. Notifications are not delayed when the watch always on display is off so...?

I have AW6 and my update cycle is every 2 years and not feeling much about AW8 and the ultra have a recessed glass inside the case, so I went with Ultra

Hardly paper :) however even if you look closely at map images from Apple its hardly a half character
If you look at the map and the green area to the right I believe shows much more on the Ultra, at least to my eyes. When using maps you will gladly take any extra screen real-estate. It means that you may not have to adjust the map as much when on a trail etc.

That is what I mean by it is for fashion. It is for other people to see, not for you.

I don't understand why talk about a price difference of $50,- while it's prices are $699,- and $799,-?
What do I miss?

My Apple Watch 4 is on its last legs. I had the Series 0 in Stainless Steel and now the Series 4 in Sport. The sport quality is just bad. My activities are definitely not "extreme," just working out, minor hiking and camping. But my Sport screen is all scratched up and the casing is dented in two places so I cannot use my bands with metal connections (even the softer ones are difficult to remove). My Stainless Steel held up perfectly, no dents and no scratches for the 4+ years I had it.

I would not buy a Sport again, so been eyeing the Stainless Steel. With a very small price difference I am definitely looking at the Ultra. Can't wait until it is in stores so I can try it on.

I agree. I think many who are not outdoor enthusiasts, have a tough time understanding the benefits of a larger display real estate , even it its 2-3mms and a larger battery on a watch, especially if you are in a race, while hiking or any other situation where you are using gps and maps and not having to worry as much, about battery life is nice and the other added functions.

I decided to go with the 45mm stainless steel Series 8. The Ultra is just too large and ugly. I wish that Apple had put a little bit more effort into making the Ultra work for the office. As it stands now, I bought the watch that matches my daily office needs over a watch that matches occasional weekend hobby needs.

I already noted it shows half a character more eg the rest of the letter R in park at the edge of the green area,

If you want to call that much more then knock your socks off :) if you think that 0.5mm is going to make that much difference in not adjusting map, I think not.

That's your opinion and you are entitled to it😀.Ultimately those that purchased it and use maps will have to make up their minds if a difference can be seen when in use.
