Apple is not making these watch for people who want to upgrade yearly since there's not a difference other then one more health feature. They're not going to put all the features at once when they could spread it out for 5 years or more. But it sad that the value drop so much. For instance the iPhone 13 and 14 are so similar the only difference is the sos feature and crash detection and most people don't even know that it has that feature.

It's not blazing fast at all. It's actually quite a dog. Have you even used one?

I have to agree, and not just the app responsiveness but the comms are no where near as fast as the phone. This is meant to be a phone decoupling device so it needs to be able to handle those functions with speed and efficiency. If I could quickly download a podcast as on phone, would actually use watch for it instead of having to ensure it slowly syncs in background. I think theres a huge performance gap waiting to be filled.

But for some other people that practice hiking or mountain biking - for example, me - that feature is tremendously useful 😉

We must remember that Apple has millions of users in the world, and something that is useful for you may not be useful for me, and vice versa.

I suppose if it ain’t broken dont need to fix it, however I wish they would release ultra in a slightly smaller size… looks so goofy on people with smaller wrists but would love that design and its durability… might need to just put some extra weight on so it looks less silly haha
I don't think extreme outdoorsmen, divers, and hikers care about the size. In fact, the larger size is a boon.

So no real changes since the s6. Watch has peaked.
Definitely not. The product has not
reached maturity, not even close; there's so much more that wearables can provide in the future. However, the category has certainly hit a wall, and the tech to make a major leap is still a couple of years away.

Nonetheless, if you maybe have a Series 4 or older, you will see a major upgrade with the S9's increased performance, storage and memory.

If you have an S5, you can hold off another year, but maybe have the battery replace, unless the increased performance really matters to you.

For everyone else, let's wait and see what the new battery life is like. An extra 2 hours of battery would be huge.

The Apple Watch peaked a few generations ago. There’s really nothing exciting about it anymore. I’m probably in the minority, but I use it less and less. Just need the time.

If all you need is the time then the Apple Watch was never meant for you.

Apart from a few health things like blood sugar, which is still years away, I dont think it needs many more features anyway. You're never going to be able to surf the internet or write on it because it's too small. It just needs a better battery and more storage so you can fit all your music and audiobooks on it.
And more watch faces.
And make it round

The only disappointment I have is the watch faces. Why they won't open up an App Store for them is beyond me. The new faces this year are for the most part terrible and there are some developers out there who could do amazing things if they were given the chance.

Correct. People here would rather the watch continue to be slow than to have to charge it every day. Bizarre doesn't even begin to describe it.

Hmm, I think my Series 6 is getting replaced. Either that or I'm getting my 84% battery replaced for $79 from Apple. But I think this is going to be a good enough upgrade for me to move to current generation. This is something I use daily.

I am the dude with three Apple Watches (along with two mechanical watches in rotation). My AW Ultra gets almost all of my Apple Watch wearing time. I have a Series 7 Green and a Series 6 Gold SS. I wanted to upgrade the Series 6 Gold SS to a Series 9. But it seems like it may not be worth it. On the rare occasions I do wear the Series 6, battery life is lacking (but maybe that is compared to the AWU). Probably makes sense for me to just get a new battery for what is a secondary watch.

The problem with the Apple Watch is the software. The fitness tracking (ie. the main feature of the watch) is completely outdated, didn’t change since series 0, and is completely unfit for anyone doing a tiny bit more than the usual Sunday jogging. But I guess this is way too complicated for a company with such a small budget as apple..

That's just nonsense. It clearly has changed since Series 0. In Watch OS 9 they just added the feature to be able to run against yourself. There have been many incremental updates along the way.

It kinda looks like you don't use an Apple Watch at all, but somehow think that you're in a position where you understand the product. Your understanding is clearly wrong.

This article explains some of the basics:

I totally agree. The S8/Ultra now records many parameters such as resting hearth rate, HR variability, breathing rate, saturation, sleep, temperature etc but still all the notifications we have are related to those damn activity rings.

If there’s a trend in health parameters (i.e. your resting HR lowers thanks to more/better training) I’d like Watch OS to be able to identify it and notify me. A sort of analysis/coaching feature.

Today we don’t have that feature, unless we rely on third party apps (with subscription models and many other limits).

I'm in the same boat with my Series 5. I'm leaning towards getting a new watch as well, if for no reason than this one is starting to look a little beat up. Thinking of stepping up to SS too.

MR: Apple watch series 9 basically uchanged...

Also MR:
...significantly improved performance and efficiency, boosting app launch speeds and potentially improving battery life.
