thanks, yeah, it's being swapped. but will it be happening again? the apple support people on the phone seemed like they had no idea it was happening.

Unlike the crescent moon camera issue on the iPhone 6, the issue isn't widespread and the chance of you getting two watches from the bad batch in a row is highly unlikely.

Getting a swap is already very good, here in Hong Kong Apple Store they just don't give a s**t.

Wow I didn't know about this issue. Thanks for pointing it out.
All is well on my watch thankfully.
Yep, there's a few threads on this. I use a Luvvitt Ultra Armor and it protects the front but by design the back is covered and so far the lettering is still there :)

It's weird though. The senior advisor had to check with the "engineers" and whatever they determined, they made it sound like they were doing me this huge favor by swapping it out. I don't know how they would "fix" this issue if they are manufacturing it the same way. And for this watch, I think putting a case on it takes away the whole functionality of it. I dunno... Just wanted to share my experience. It's just weird Apple would be careless with this. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge apple fan. But this is just beyond me.

The Apple logo disappeared on mine as well. I chalked it up to sweat since I'd never cleaned it with anything besides a dry microfibre cloth. It doesn't bother me enough to exchange it.

same here...

My sport was showing the same signs after 4 months of use. I sold it and was stoked to find out the SS is engraved.

I think they kind of were doing you a favor. I've owned digital watches with printed on lettering that starts to fade or come off, and I never considered returning them. It's just normal wear and tear.

After 2 months ?!? Sorry. Not really.
I've got some watches here aged 10-25 years- most of them less expensive than the Apple Watch. Never had any problems like that before.
and as you can see in my photo this is not fading.... its more like "breaking out.."

I received my replacement Apple Watch Sport, space gray. Lets hope that this replacement has a better "paint" job and won't chip away within 2 months. :-\

i did a search but didn't see anything, I have a SS Apple Watch but two of my friends just purchased an Apple Watch Sport with white sport band, we were comparing watches and noticed that on the back of the watch where it has the serial number and other details, that one of their watches is in black lettering and the other is like a silver lettering. Has anyone seen this before? Weird that they were both purchased around the same time but that is different on the back

I saw that...but these watches are brand new. One purchased Saturday night and one on Sunday night

So fresh out of the box they are different

No different from a subset of defective iPhones whose anodized coating rubbed off like crazy fresh out of the box. It can strike anytime depending on how fragile the coating is.

Isn't that about the space grey models having the colour rubbing off? OP sounds like he's saying both his friends bought silver sport models (with the white sport band) and one silver watch has silver lettering, while the other silver watch has black lettering. Unless I'm not understanding his post correctly

Yeah, it's not really clear whether the culprit is the etched lettering within the anodized coating or the anodized coating itself that holds the lettering. However, all Sport models have an anodized coating. It's just the same color as bare aluminum underneath on the silver model.

Chuyn that's exactly what I'm saying

I'll post pics in a bit

Thanks for posting those pictures. It's very interesting as the text does not appear to be engraved any longer, rather printed on the anodized finish.

Likely there is more than one location where the aluminum watches are finished. That may account for the difference.

My Space Grey Sport is definitely printed on, not engraved.

Probably a manufacturing change after the previous lettering had been shown to be defective.

Is the new lettering just printed, or laser-etched like Apple can do on iPhones and iPods?
