Correction…
ONE year hiatus.
Correction, zero year hiatus. The watch is still available today, and is excellent at what it does. The idea that expensive things like a watch need to be updated every year to add tiny and forgettable tweaks is insane.

Ugh, not 5G! Give us more sensors or a more efficient CPU for better battery life. LTE is plenty fast enough, even for phones… 5G brought a speed increase that’s not even noticeable in the vast majority of situations in exchange for worse battery life... not worth it.

Exactly what I'm thinking to. For now, my Ultra (the original version) is a joy to use. Battery health is 89% of original capacity and still lasts for a good long time, though noticeably not as long as it used to. I really, really hope that by the time my Ultra needs a new battery replacement that the blood oxygen thing is already back and available to the US market.
Interesting, mine is also at 89%. It'll be 3 yo in January. Have you noticed it's taking way longer to charge?

Happened for the regular Apple Watch, for 10 years, so, there’s your precedence…
And the “edition” watches were even more expensive than the Ultra (Ti, ceramic).
So how is the Ultra different?

Sales are falling off a cliff and THIS is what they expect to bring in new buyers? 🤣 Wait, wait, I almost forgot.. it will also feature fastest watch CPU ever!! And maybe some more Neural cores!!!

Is there anybody left in Apple’s employment who understands what people who don’t autobuy Apple products just because they carry the logo actually want?

Why don't you tell us?

Hard to improve upon perfection aside from minor spec bumps and increased battery life.

What are you wanting?

"Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has suggested the Ultra 3 could gain satellite connectivity and 5G capabilities, features that would arguably help justify the extended development cycle."

I don't see any need to justify it at all, is it necessary we need a new Watch every year adding very marginal changes? I'd prefer it if they left it until they have something meaningful to add.

To be honest I expect them to leave the Series 10 this year with the focus being on the Ultra 3. Maybe we'll see an updated SE at some point over the year and then have the Series 11 next year.
Have they ever not released a new yearly series watch Gen since it's inception? Id be surprised if they don't launch the 11 series because they market a new watch to go along with your new iPhone every September

That’s fine. Normalise longer life cycles for products.

If there’s no meaningful update, don’t spin one out for the sake of it.

Guess I got “modded” this morning for agreeing to this in a pithy manner. Anyways…. I agree with this and think the magic is lost with yearly incremental updates, they just don’t mean anything significant anymore.

I am betting on a battery upgrade! It will have .05% more battery life than before and a full color display! I have to charge my Ultra daily. That sucks.

An ultra low power mode which combined with solar power charging would allow it to run the essentials for days, or have enough juice to be able to trigger satellite calls etc. would be amazing...

...Although if you're a serious explorer, I really doubt that you would rely on an AWU to do that.

I think Apple understands that Apple Watches are more or less on a replacement cycle now, and there really isn’t any one “must have” feature which would make hordes of existing users rush to replace their current watches with one.

Not until Apple re-enables the missing (lawsuit) blood oxygen features will I be upgrading from my Series 9.

Can I ask you how do you use this function? Mine ranges from 93% to 100% most days and I can’t seem to find it useful.

my view is the same for all of the other watches. Not just for this one. It would be good if we could all get out of the yearly refresh cycle.

Yes, exactly this. I see no meaningful difference between the 1st Gen Ultra I bought in 2022 and the one I could buy today. And this is par for the course for Apple Watches generally, a segment they doggedly refuse to deviate from annual updates despite the glacial pace on innovation.

Come to Canada. That works just fine on my watch.

That said, satellite and 5G is not compelling enough for an upgrade.
At this point, you're nuts if you buy a new AW or iPhone without smuggling it in from Canada. No pulse ox on the watch, no SIM slot on the phone.

Would really like if Apple added
ON-SCREEN WORKOUT ANIMATIONS ON-SCREEN WORKOUT MUSCLE MAPS
And much more gym work outs include dumbbell work outs, barbell work outs, weights and more like what Garmin offers

For me, the ultra is meh.

It's just too big and heavy.

Yeah, I'm the guy who complains that my phone isn't big and heavy enough. But this is something that goes on my wrist, I want it smaller and lighter. I made a mistake buying the 45mm 7, I won't be doing that again, when I do decide to get a newer watch it's gonna be the smallest one they sell.

No, a Garmin or Fitbit won't work for me. I got it for the notifications, the phone calls, the heart rate, the ECG, and the pulse ox.

This. I hope to finally see a smaller version of AWU this year - the size is pretty much the only thing that's stopping me from upgrading from the regular AW.

Do not encourage people who bought top-of-the-line $800 smartwatches less than three years ago to upgrade them for no reason! I've still got a Series 5 (2019!) and I'm only just now considering upgrading this fall.
Technology advances - even for formerly „top-of-the-line“ smartwatches. You may have been okay with sticking that long to a watch that is 5 generations old now. Others may prioritize differently - and there may be good reasons to update even from an Ultra 2.

The replaced device might be sold second hand to people who could not afford the asking price when new. Or they become hand-me-downs within the family.

Interesting question because my sense is that it feels it is taking longer to charge, but could it be because it depletes MORE and therefore to charge back up it takes longer? Previously when it was at 100% capacity, the same amount of use wouldn't have depleted as much of the battery, so there's less it needs to charge back up. That's my guess.

Same thought. Why bother with 5G? We don't need that kind of speed (it would not show up as any difference, I think, for the Watch, and it also uses more battery power). I'd like even better battery life and battery longevity.
