I just don't get why Apple doesn't address this with something better than working as designed -- the designers got it *wrong*. Just last night I tried looking what time it was on my watch while in bed I could not read the digital time, much less see the complications. What a joke -- it was easier to ask my Echo what time it was than looking at my time-piece (watch).

If I was still in my 14 day period I would ship it back and get a real watch that I could read any time of the day. I like having the cell phone capabilities, but I like being able to see what's on my watch too.

So, I use the utility watch face and have not found a way to make the face bright enough to read messages in the dark. Can anyone tell me how to turn off night mode? I’m fine with my ultra 2 other than that.

You can’t - this is how it is. This is not night mode, this is how it is.

People are commenting this on the Apple forums and Apple mods are deleting the posts…

I tried to read a notification on my watch today with the curtains closed, I could not see it, at first I thought it was in sleep mode and I tapped on the screen and it barely got any brighter….

I was reading another post here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255146215 and a guy fell while running at night because he was trying to read the watch

today I got a text and couldn’t even read it in my room with the curtains closed, I just opened my phone to read it instead of the watch.

Unusably dim in dark room. So dim that my U2 is going back during the 14 day window. IF Apple acknowledged the issue and promised a fix, I'd keep it... buy they have done neither. I'll PROBABLY buy another one although my AW7 works perfectly fine.

I was escorted out of an Apple Store today when I tried to show them the issue. Security was called and everything. This seems like a known issue.

Not much of an issue.
This can easily be fixed with a software update. And users can increase the brightness...
As I mentioned earlier, IF Apple simply acknowledged the issue (benefit of the doubt to Apple; I won't call it a "problem") and said a fix was on the way, I'd keep my U2. But, they have not done this, so back it goes. I'll probably buy it again IF they fix this issue, but who knows?

I just updated to 10.1 (build 21S67). It does not indicate "beta" anywhere, but it was downloaded from the "Beta Updates" section of the Watch App on iPhone. I'll try to see if it still goes too low to read. Closet, here I came.

I can already tell you this does not resolve the issue

Wild stuff to read. First they mess up something that has never been a problem, then they refuse to acknowledge the mistake, and now they're deleting posts, removing people from stores... difficult to believe this can actually be happening. How does anyone at Apple expect that this kind of behavior will not hurt them?

I will confirm that.
Hey!

At least they fixed the complications that haven’t worked since launch day and the only ‘new’ feature “finger tap” that was the spotlight of the show now seems to be activated a month and a half late. I mean if you are trying to market a device with only 1 new feature and don’t even activate it at launch why can you say…

did someone say here that they heard apple was going from 1 nit to 2 nits for this? If so, it's not on 10.2, or at least nothing that is easily noticeable. But 1 nit difference seems almost silly.
apple doesn't seem to monitor this forum or even it's own, but may be worth a look and a post to keep this issue alive:

Hi,

They have officially bannned me from their message board now. They gave me no reason why other than I violated terms.

Every single post I posted they promptly removed. My last post asking simply why they are removing my posts resulted in a permanent ban. Everything has been documented because they are so stupid they actually email you when you post is deleted and attach a copy of it where you can see i have done nothing wrong what so ever.

Posts where I did not swear or conduct myself any less then I would in a professional business manner simply stating the facts where my watch DID NOT WORK.

Every single post was removed almost instantly.

Received the Apple Market Research survey request from Apple today re: the Ultra 2 purchase. There is a comments section in it. I suggest anyone who receives it, fill it out and comment about the dimness issue.

by the way, I don't think Apple pays much if any attention to their own forum. Certainly not this one here. Their loss really... only the largest apple-gates get any attention it seems, aside from the minor useless things most people don't care about but Apple seems to dwell on. oh well...

Auto-Dim (ambient sensor) turn-off feature was reported 4 years ago to Apple, via Apple Forum, their feature support links, etc. Apple have not responded to fix this. Instead they removed a workaround that was available before watchOS10. I suspect it's a higher-up in Apple that do not want bad publicity with battery if too many users use it, then they will complain about battery life.

That's probably it, and darn it, nobody makes a watch that I like as much as an AW. But next upgrade if they never fix it will not be an apple watch. I also have a Samsung GW 6 that isn't as nice, it's bright enough to see anytime.

Not to discount this issue...but do people know how eyes work? If you move from a bright room to a dark room, you aren't going to see dim lights for a few seconds/minutes as your eyes acclimate to the new brightness levels. I also suspect people could be looking at max brightness iPhones or a TV in dark rooms, then looking at a 1/2 nit watch display.

Just don't want these people to force apple to ruin my 2 nit night mode which is one of my favorite ultra features.

Add an accessibility setting to force a minimum brightness level, problem solved.
People generally know how their eyes work. You don’t need to educate them...

The Apple Watch Ultra display is too difficult to read in low light conditions, report some users, an ambient light sensor issue that is likely linked to Apple's watchOS 10 software update last month.

There are multiple complaints from MacRumors readers (1, 2), Reddit users (1, 2, 3, 4), and Apple Community users who say that they are unable to read information on the Apple Watch Ultra display in dark environments because the screen is too dim, suggesting the device's ambient light sensor has not been properly calibrated to increase brightness to an adequate level.

Launched last month, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 pushes the maximum screen brightness to 3,000 nits, making it the brightest Apple Watch ever, according to Apple. The display is also capable of reducing brightness to as low as 1 nits.

Some Ultra 2 owners have pinned the blame on this new hardware specification, however the recent uptick in reports also includes users of the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, suggesting it is an issue with Apple's watchOS 10 software update, which was released in September.

Users say the issue is particularly pronounced when quickly moving from a bright room to a dark area, and when the Wayfinder and Ultra Modular watch face is set to Night mode, which puts a red filter on the display. Legibility issues persist despite manual adjustments to the brightness level in the watch's Settings. Both Ultra and Ultra 2 owners say the problem is evident on models updated with watchOS 10.0.1 and the latest watchOS 10.0.2 update.
Apple is reportedly aware of the issue, so hopefully a future software update will remedy the situation. Have you experienced difficulty reading information on the Apple Watch Ultra's screen in low light? Let us know in the comments.

(Thanks, Joshua!)

I purchased my UW2 on 09/29/2023 and returned it (3) days later for the same reason. It was just too dimm for me while in dark areas. If Apple owns up to this and fix it, I'll consider repurchasing again
