there was no mystery , since the moment we saw how bigger it is...most of us knew it
Apple could have put a headphone jack in that big of a space and sealed it off, kept same size battery. We'll need to see the teardown to solve this mystery!

Actual SoC is much more than enough.
It barely gets by for me. I don't know about you, but I need to edit 8K video on my watch, while rendering Cinema 4D projects and compiling my new useless app with a $10/wk subscription.

Yeah totally understand, my AW4 is still previous version tech basically no AOD, smaller screen, no fast charging and the older previous gen chipset (i feel it is perfectly fine though)

So i think my experience will be more positive then someone that already has all these featurs on their AW6 or up as in a smaller marginal experience boost in terms of usage.
I totally think you'll see it - the screen is way nicer and bigger, I think you'll enjoy it.

Crazy how weak the series 8 "upgrade" proposition hast turned out. It's essentially a series 6 with ovulation tracking. Now subtract the men who don't have a cycle, kids, post-menopausal women, and women who are on birth control and don't care about ovulation... and for the vast majority of the Apple Watch community, there is no reason to upgrade. They really mailed it in on the series 8.
I definitely agree with this take except you are forgetting that it's 2022 and men can now ovulate. Apple is still hitting 100% of the market.

I'm a man with tiny wrists and if I were to wear the Ultra, I'd look like one of those nerds in the 80s that had those huge calculator watches. Hard pass. Also, I won't pay $800 for a watch with an old SoC.
Imagine spending $800 USD to look like the guy that got picked on in the 80s 😂

Man, this thing is ugly. A fat lower body with a smaller display on top. A Gamin Epix 2 with OLED display gives you at least a week battery life and looks nice.

Someone has to call Ive immediately.
Wow, I just looked at the Epix, and that thing is LOADED. for a serious outdoor enthusiast, that watch should be the pick above this one for the price by far. That thing is amazing.

That being said, my nike version 5 will just have to do for another 3-4 years, as the last thing I would spend $1k on is a watch. I am NOT the target market here :)

When this and other posted articles indicate the same CPU identifier - how do you conclude that the SOC is 3 years old?
Do you know the difference between COU and SOC?

It makes sense, as the motherboards have gotten so shockingly small, just about every Apple product is mostly battery inside.

Looks like another year before I upgrade my 6. I'm waiting on USB-C on the Ultra.

Alright, so hear me out. When I discovered the 2 year old SOC on this thing, I was bummed as well. We all know, as already suggested, that this will be a selling point next year, when they upgrade it to a 3nm SOC. Also mentioned, the significant difference in screen size ratio, to casing ratio from the Series 8.

So if we take those two things only, and look at the history of the AW, you’ll see some interesting trends. Series 0-3 got a few updates to the SOC, which is understandable for a brand new device, but I think some of those had similar, if not the same CPU, as we are discussing here, b/c we are calling the SOC S8, even though the CPU is shared with the S6-S8 SOC.

If you look at what else was updated over the Series 0-3, you’ll see mostly sensors and a few screen updates (not size, but type of display), a battery upsize, and that’s about it.

I bought a Series 3, b/c I had waited and waited, and thought, man, this is it, this is the time to buy, b/c it’s got cellular (which I dumbly used for 2 years), dual core CPU, more storage (stainless version), better GPS, and an altimeter, oh, and Bluetooth 4.2, if anyone cared about that…

Series 3 was the WORST time to buy an Apple Watch. Fast forward to the Series 4. New optical HR sensor, bigger display, 64 bit dual core CPU, 16GB for everyone, more RAM, bigger battery…

One year. ONE YEAR after Series 3 was released, and Apple says, no more watch face updates for you. Oh, sorry, wait, we get the fancy ones that don’t display any more information, but hey, at least the time looks different… Seriously. I was pretty bummed. I’ve had this watch now 5 years. It’s a turd now. I’m tempted to wait for the Ultra Series 2, but at the same time, I’m like why? So that when the Series 3/4 comes out, they will remove that funneling down of the screen protection titanium, and make the case with display a full 49mm…and then have a watch that will get no more watch face updates b/c, wait, we have a bigger screen now, but wait, you have the older size, we already fit as much as we could on that display, so tough luck…

My last point, some have already mentioned, a 3nm CPU would most likely only be used to extend battery life even further, so we likely won’t see a performance boost, in the traditional sense, so assuming that overall WatchOS performance would remain fairly constant for 3 or so years seems reasonable… Series 2 Ultra might get 40-44 hours out of a new CPU, 64-68 hours in low battery mode.

So I’m thinking Ultra Series 1 is a (Buy Now), especially from a Series 3 back, thoughts?

Yes, don't. You probably don't need it. If you want fitness or sleep tracking look elsewhere.

I’m really excited to get this in and try it. Its big and exactly what I was hoping for.
Same. I switched my strap from the black/gray trail loop to the Alpine Green loop and my delivery date went from Oct 21-28 to Sept 23rd...next Friday! I'm coming from a non-cellular Series 5 44mm, so this will be a nice upgrade. Much better battery, bigger brighter display, new design, new material, several exclusive features and watch faces. I'm excited.
