Crazy how weak the series 8 "upgrade" proposition hast turned out. It's essentially a series 6 with ovulation tracking. Now subtract the men who don't have a cycle, kids, post-menopausal women, and women who are on birth control and don't care about ovulation... and for the vast majority of the Apple Watch community, there is no reason to upgrade. They really mailed it in on the series 8.
Agreed, Ultra is the only choice for me. I waited and waited, almost bought the Series 7 45mm last year, but glad I held out on the Ultra. My Series 5 is still fast, runs super smooth, no issues except battery doesn't hold up nearly as well. Maybe 10-12 hours tops depending on how I use it, and it's the non-cellular model. I mountain bike and spend time out in the mountains so was wanting a cellular model (I'm never so far out that there's no cell service) and the Ultra just ticked so many boxes.

So Apple make the case slightly bigger, thicker and then logically use that space for a significantly higher cap battery.

I hope the iPhone team are paying attention.

I wasn’t even considering an upgrade on my Ti S5 but there’s so much appealing about the Ultra proposition, I impulse ordered.

I have a Series 4 that I should probably upgrade. I’m on the fence with the 8 or the Ultra. Longer battery would be nice, but concerned with the extra size

Only -20C and they state that the battery drain faster in cold weather.
So, nothing for winter sports as they advertised.
we have here in switzerland in winter in the mountains often colder temperatures.

maybe i need to put the watch in my pockets to keep it warm enough.

i‘ll wait the second gen. coming out…

Don’t you still get the temperature sensor? I know they focused on ovulation during the event, but we all can use it correct?

If Apple's watch trade-in values were better, I might consider the Ultra even with the older SIP (and highly likely to be replaced with a more efficient 3nm SIP soon). Today they will only give me $180 for a S7 45mm LTE AL. It would be tough to be offered next year the same percentage of original value on an Ultra upgrade. I think if one can wait, it might be prudent if money is a consideration. I am passing for now.

$800 is a bit of a stretch for a 36 hour digital watch.
When I travel internationally not only do I need an outlet and cables for my MacBook Pro, iPhone, and iPad but I also need one for my Watch. It’s becomes a pain having to always charge the thing.
Four port GaN charger. I have one from Zyron that outputs 100W from one USBc port while still having 20W to charge your other stuff. There are 140W fast charge multiport chargers for your MBP but I haven’t been game to try them yet.

One charger doesn’t take up much space, and you were taking one anyway.

The processor is plenty fast enough for the tasks you are doing on Apple Watch…I don’t see many people rendering 8k video over two monitors from their Watch

I think this is going to be popular with the target audience and people who really want a big watch. As someone who buys the smaller of the regular watches and absolutely hates heavy watches I wouldn’t ever get this. Of course I’m not running marathons or climbing Mount Everest so I don’t think I need it. The only thing that has me interested with this one is the better GPS and longer battery life. I’m not willing to go for a huge watch to get that though.

I went with the regular aluminum S8 41 mm noncellular watch. I think there’s something to be said about the base model series watches. For most people I think they’re ideal.

Spending 50% more for stainless steel just doesn’t seem like a good value when it’s exactly the same other than the shell. I’m not talking about if someone doesn’t mind spending the money and wants to buy the higher end watches. I’m more referring to people who buy one then feel they need to keep it for five years or longer because they spent so much. Is that point they’re missing out on functionality in the newer watches. Of course everyone has to decide if they prefer functionality over looks but if they’re just going for looks I think they would be looking at an analog watch.

I think trade in values are based on the components. On iPhone I’m guessing they’re salvaging quite a few components but still likely losing money. You have to remember when Apple sells refurbished stuff the whole case is new so that fancy stainless steel watch case is scrap metal to them. With the watch I suspect they’re not getting much at all for components.

I still feel you though because I looked at the trade in value for my stainless steel series 6 and it was sad compared to what I paid.

What are you doing on your watch that needs so much more performance?
I don’t think a CPU upgrade would mean more performance. If anything it would mean less power consumption by using a smaller process. I think people get hung up on the idea that they need more power. I’m sure of the CPU in the watch is more powerful than it needs to be. I haven’t seen anything lag when opening.

I'd get on-board with the power consumption angle, if the Ultra hadn't had a big increase in battery life. That only leaves people complaining about the same SOC/ CPU because it's not powerful enough. Again, I'm not sure what they're doing that a) needs more power whilst b) complaining about poor battery life.

Does a lot more than a simple watch. Personally looking forward to the hiking/trekking features and the dive computer. I figure I can sell two specialty watches (my Garmin and a Dive Watch) plus my AW4 and come out ahead on this one.

As for the travel issue... I recommend picking up a 65W three device charger (link below). That plus the your cables does the trick. Or add a multiport adapter for your Macbook. Both are light and great for travel. Take it from someone who's only home about 15 days a month.
