I am exchanging it, also has a ding in the bezel out of box
not supposed to be flush, they made a pretty big deal about it in the promo video.
I will inspect replacement before return, if no better, I will keep what I have.
I am pretty sure that what we are seeing are within normal manufacturing tolerances

On my Apple Watch Ultra, the glass is definitely not flush with the bezel.

I think this was the factory intended spec, sapphire slightly recessed. If not, they would all be flush, apple knows how to produce perfectly flush glass, iPhone 12-14 pro lineup is perfectly flush almost every time. But at the same time I don’t consider the ones that are flush defective. One of the two has got to be spec’d from prototypes. The released marketing is ambiguous and open for different interpretations.

This comment sums up the situation perfectly, I think. (Although I guess we’d need Apple to weigh in to know for sure.) Glad you got the Watch replaced and are happy with the new one!

I have an iCarez Matte screen protector on my Ultra - makes a MASSIVE difference with glare - I don't use it for any other reason.

Despite the reviews mine fit perfectly.

And point of this post - I can tell that the screen protector is VERY VERY slightly higher than the edge of the watch - like half a pinpoint. Which means if I took off the screen protector there would be a slight recession.

Seems like that’s how most of them are. I would love to know definitively how it was intended to be lol Recessed/flush are both good. When I first checked one out it was recessed noticeably and I thought this different, I like it, it must be a protective thing… but like someone said earlier in this thread, how would that actually help for protection? lol It would be fun to call AppleCare or raise the question in a gb reservation, they would be scratching their heads too!

Oh yeah?
That is the impression I got from this video and you can see it extending as well.
So maybe the ones that I have seen receded are simply acceptable tolerance differences?
I am completely open to being wrong about this, I often am, but that is the impression I got from the video here.
Compared to the other Apple Watches, this one has the casing that extends to surround the crystal (as it says in the video). The other models have it completely exposed. Nowhere in that video does it say that it extends BEYOND the crystal. You have just misunderstood.

Any minor differences are due to manufacturing tolerances. But if anyone isn’t happy, Apple have a 2 week no-questions-asked returns policy.

Have you not read the thread? All of this has been covered, additionally my thoughts on the matter too. I agree it’s most likely a difference in tolerances. I did in fact exchange it due to a dent out of the box… And happily the new one is actually in new condition, no dents/dings etc. screen depth is like all others have described here. Another thing of note about the replacement, original had a super stiff click wheel, replacement is smooth and responsive. That first watch should not have made it past QA.
