Still no sign of the Trail Loop anywhere. Think I'll go with the Alpine Loop the next time it becomes available.

Does a 234 mAh larger battery and a 4mm larger screen than the AW8 45mm warrant a price increase of 370$ compared to 429 USD of AW8?
Probably not, but when you add in titanium case, higher durability, double the screen brightness, double the depth of water resistance, 40m dive capability, depth gauge, water temperature sensor, diving certification, and an extra-loud emergency siren, it's definitely "worth" (if you have use for any or all of those things) an extra $370. If anything, I'm a bit surprised it's not even more expensive.

Wow. So many editorialized statements with *nothing* to back it up.

This guy can speak to impact durability of whatever sapphire ceramic composition this is without any testing?

I miss the iFixit of old that wasn’t a media company…

iFixit is not a good PR company - the products they sell are very good.

No their PR is fantastic, they’ve complained and harnessed so much faux rage online that it’s incentivized both Google and Samsung to partner up with iFixit an official parts/tool retailer.

Their last axe to grind is Apple.

The tone of this company has changed *dramatically* since they clearly got competent PR people.

Improved water resistance?? On a device intended for diving, with a depth meter?!? WOW 😯

Sadly looks like this might be the worst watch yet re: battery replacement. $400/year, then to the landfill. Oh well, I am sticking with my $16 Casio (whose battery is easily replaced using rear case screws), and my Luddite approach to sports/fitness.
$400 a year? Lmao talk about flat out lying. The regular apple watch can last close to 3-4 years before the battery dies. I’m guessing the Ultra can go 4-5 before the battery goes. Obviously you’ll take a performance hit with battery life into the 3 year mark but it should still last and entire day. I usually have 30-40 % after 24hrs. So 1 waking day which is around 16 hours or so I have 50-60%. Glad you like your $16 Casio. I’m happy with my S7 :)

It almost seemed as though he wanted to break the display so he could complain about it.
Yep, it’s called view counts and a boring video correctly taking it apart just isn’t entertaining. People like to see expensive things broken.

That’s iFixit for you.

Now they can sell you some crap tools and some crap parts to make you feel good about doing a bad quality repair yourself!
The tools aren’t too bad, but they’re not professional grade obviously. I have one of the screwdriver sets and it comes in handy sometimes. You just have to know your limitations with what you’re capable of repairing. If you want to improve your skill, then you need to get some junk iPhones or whatever and work on them so when you break something it’s no big deal. I’m just lazy and would rather have someone skilled fix it for about the same price it would cost me to fix it.

You do know that the battery is replaceable right? It’s $80 plus tax at the Apple Store if you don’t have AppleCare. I took mine in, but you probably could mail it in as well. The store I went to mailed it out anyway. I just had it done on my series 4 so now it’s probably good for another four years.

louder? I think you're missing the key point of the Taptic Engine here. Unless vibration doesn't feel any bit significant at all.

Maybe I was not explaining it right. My S7 just gave me a subtle tap on my wrist. If I was in a quiet room with other people around it was pretty much only me noticing the notification coming in. My Ultra is really audible in a quiet surrounding when it gives me that "tap"

This guy is clueless lol. Calls GPS on Apple Watches “abysmal”, doesn’t understand how the siren works, and worst of all damages the screen by prying it open with metal tool and not using suction cups, then blames it on the watch.
I’ve watched a few iFixit teardowns and they are a bunch of hacks. Forcing things open, no grounding wrist strapparts just fall on the floor.

While I’m not as vocal as a lot of people on repairability, I continue to be amazed about Apple’s “commitment” to the environment and… difficult to replace batteries. It’s the one component that’s known to have a very limited lifespan. Additionally, the supply loop is getting better and better in terms of recycling.

Replacing a battery should always be something as simple as possible.

This is why Apple Watch can only last for three years.
