For all we know, a mechanical watch will be about as interesting as a vintage typewriter in 60 years. I do know that my four year old will appreciate the surprise week at Aulani that I'll fund when selling one of my mechanical watches. It's just about priorities, and I'm thrilled that I like a $950 smartwatch enough to sell thousands of dollars worth of mechanical watches.

Congrats for the choice. Should be "sticky"

Really, ya think so do you?

Tell you what, how about you suggest we burn all the ancient books, and documents of independence and all that "old stuff" and just move the documents over to Kindles and Tablet/e-readers ?

After all these new things can do so much more and who wants boring old printed ink on mashed up sheets of paper.

Amazing how short sighted your comments are.

Even with your example, a classic typewriter will become more and more valuable over the years, vastly more than a mass produced device, stamped out in the tens of millions and superseded almost every year.

Short sighted? The problem with your assertion is that most mechanical watches, including Rolex, are also mass produced. I don't own something like a Richard Mille, or even a Patek Phillipe.

Rolex values have been in a bubble for a decade or so, and they sell around a million of them per year. They aren't rare, and neither are other mid-level brands like Omega, Tag, etc.

Either way, it's simply a matter of how one allocates money, even if Rolex watches are still valuable in decades. Now that I no longer wear my mechanicals, I've decided that I'd prefer to go on an extra vacation this year and wear an Apple Watch, rather than have the money tied up in a mechanical watch. I've got a gold pocket watch that's a family heirloom that I'll keep.

Are you saying you invest all your money in watches? If investing is the goal, there are probably better avenues.
