I wish I could say that Apple was in good company, but that Space Pirate watch is ... bizarre. And huge. I mean, absolutely huge. And it's not a smart watch by any means. Mechanically, it's really fascinating and I think it would make a much better desk clock. I love watching the mechanism but if I were wearing it, most of the time it would go unnoticed (except for the big bulge under my sleeve). As for using it to tell the time, I think I would just give up.

The Space Pirate makes the Apple Watch look like the epitome of elegance in comparison.

Wow... $230K for the world's most ugly/alien looking watch.

It looks like you might be able to tell time with it... I'm not quite sure about that, though.

Also, read the description about it. It talks about the "Engine" of the watch, as if it's some kind of crazy UFO or something. Which, actually, it does look like a UFO. If I needed inspiration for what a UFO would look like in a movie, I would probably go with that $230K watch.

wow, that Space Pirate is ugly.

Looks like a mini F1 Formula Car with the 4 wheels being used to tell time.

Nice win, but that other recipient does look odd. You can buy 20 Apple Watch Edition models for the price of the Space Pirate.

The Product Design category of the Red Dot awards celebrates 31 total areas of design, including everything from living room furniture to vehicle accessories, with the "Watches" category getting introduced this year to compensate for the increasingly crowded smartwatch market.
That's surely incorrect as the watch I'm currently wearing (by Martin Larsen for Danish Design) won a Red Dot award in 2008.

You people are making a lot of silly assumptions. I'm quite sure that they didn't give it an award based on watching Jony Ive's video. You can bet that they had a prototype IN THEIR HANDS that they used to make the judgement.

Like the ridiculous comment about a movie, the academy certainly could give an academy award to a move that hadn't been released, but they would do it after watching it, not from the trailers. Sheesh you guys.

You have to laugh a little at all the hype that's preceding this product.

I must admit, in all my years, I've never seen anything so hyped up before a launch to the public.

I'm not sure what other feel, but this, to me just screams nervousness over a product. If you know you have a great product, as a great company, then why would you be so amazingly desperate to try and get it seen in fashion mags, being give to a model being paid to wear it, having, let's face it, poncy articles drooling over it, with syrup sweet text just oozing with Apple's promo marketing speak.

It just to me smacks of total and utter desperation, and no confidence in your product being able to survive without pumping millions into the publicly surrounding it.

This gif does a good job translating everyone's comments in here...

come. on. seriously, a DESIGN award for the apple watch...

They say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and all. Still... I guess the iWatch is gonna be one of those polarizing things in life (opera, religion;), Tim Tebow:p), either you love it or hate it; no there is middle ground. I find the iWatch hideous as well. Probably the second ugliest watch I've ever laid eyes on.

Iconic

When I saw the first 3d model of the Apple watch I thought like most people this turns out to be bulky. But now as news and stories coming in, I really get the idea of how much thinking went into this product - decisions about size, weight, interaction, material, software, marketing.

Others just tried to shrink a phone or added bluetooth to a classic timepiece -Apple found a very distinctive design. I am OK with these Awards. No doubt it is iconic.

It's like when Obama got the Nobel peace prize a mere few months (weeks?) into his first term as president...

The Moto 360 has the best design and is actually quite a bit more than a classic timepiece with BT thrown in. I would recommend taking a look at one. The 360 v2 should be even better.

Just maybe...

Durability? The watch hasn't even been released yet!

the committee has had the Apple watch for quite awile now testing it, ya think? After all Tim & a few world class models were seen wearing it more than a few days ago. :)

Will we next see Bono sporting a red version & it being packaged with the latest U2 album that's never been released?

This is just a guess, but it seems possible to me that, while Red Dots in the past have been given to watches, this is the first year in which the awards have included a specific category for watches. That would seem to be the simplest interpretation of the MR article text.

Wow, I love that crazy MB&F watch. That's just incredible.

(This is more the kind of thing I'd waste my money on if I were rich.)

I said the same thing, how do they know that apple didn't give them a AW for a test run?
