I am an Apple fan but even I have to roll my eyes at giving a design and functionality award to something that isn't even in the wild yet. Wouldn't it be funny if the thing didn't work?

How many major products have Apple introduced that didn't work?

Unlike some people around here, I love the Apple Watch's design. It's a little chunky, but it's nice that Apple did not prioritize thinness from the start so we could get some good battery life. The second gen may be a different story though.

The Apple Watch wasn't alone in the smartwatch category, however, as the MB&F HM6 Space Pirate horological smartwatch also received the "Best of the Best" designation

Too bad there isn't a 'Bestest of the Best' category, Apple would surely have it nailed.

I'd like a source for your unsubstantiated implication.

To be fair, the Red Dot award is a lot about paying money. You pay about €300 to the Red Dot company just to submit an item. If you win, you need to buy a "winner's package" which start at €3,000. There are many thousands of submissions each year, and usually around a thousand winners. While that is not a ratio that could be called award-buying, it also definitely is not like an "Oscar for Design", as the Red Dot company clearly must have an interest in handing out lots and lots of awards. Also, when each jury member has to evaluate hundreds of products per year, you can wonder how much thought they will put into each decision.

I'm amazed so many of you hate the MB&F watch. I think MB&F makes some of the coolest looking, most unique watches in the world, if not most expensive. Perhaps the steampunk/WW2 era designs appeal to me, but I suppose I can see how others may not care for the non-traditional designs. Of course, I've never understood how people can look at a Rolex or Tag and say, "yep, thats a $25,000 watch". To me, they look just like $100 watches.

... and just WHO is "Red Dot" again? I only heard of them two seconds ago.

 Lisa
 Pip!n
 Newton
 G4 Cube
 iPod HIFI (which I disagree -- it's an EXCELLENT product)
 eMac
 Xserve
 iPod Shuffle

I think we'll add the iWatch which can't hold a charge long enough to tell time reliably to the list soon...

Articles like this, timed to fill dead air space out in public beyond the confines of the Sacred Walled Garden are quite valuable to Apple. It does make one wonder...

In before "But the watch is ugly" / "The moto 360 is better" / "But it's SQUARE, not ROUND" type comments.

We don't actually use "in before.." anymore. Didn't you get the memo?

Must have missed it, thanks for the update. ;)

18 hours of mixed use in a device that's a fraction the size of an iPad, which gets 10 hours of battery life.

Wake up at 6am and put the watch on...it won't run out of power until midnight.

How long will the battery last if only used to tell time? I would imagine a lot longer considering 'mixed use' includes a workout, app use, etc.

The red dot award is a joke anyway.

Those kind of awards have quite a questionable buisness model. They are made for designers to have the award logo on their website. You have to pay quite an amount of money to opt-in. So it shouldn't be a problem for apple.

One hand washes the other.

the committee has had the Apple watch for quite awile now testing it, ya think? After all Tim & a few world class models were seen wearing it more than a few days ago. :)

Will we next see Bono sporting a red version & it being packaged with the latest U2 album that's never been released?

When I think of testing durability, it means multiple users over months of real world usage, not a review sample that would obviously be used with kid gloves.

Not even released yet and it gets a design award?! Sheesh... next thing you know they will give Nobel Peace Prize to some twit who didn't even serve half a term in the Senate!

Wait... don't tell me that HAPPENED?!?

The red dot award is not a design award. It is simply an idea to create something that makes money. Which is sad and sadly it works.
Awards should be given by non profit organizations.
