I hear Samsung makes nice refrigerators.

Sure, until you need service......which generally is right after the warranty expires. It's the same with Samsung microwaves and TVs. Reliability and quality control at Samsung are extremely low. Resources are poured into advertising and marketing (huge budgets) rather than into the products.

Let's all be honest. All of us here bought an Android or two just to see what it is (and because we can afford it which is a given because we can afford Apple products). Most of us got burnt by the whole Android experiment (HTC Thunderbolt), and vowed to never use an Android ever again.

Admittedly, there are many of us who prefer a bigger screen size (though I support having the current size option as well). It seems that Apple will follow the iPad naming pattern with the iPhone and release a iPhone Mini (current 4 inch iPhone with a smaller footprint) and an iPhone Air (5 inch iPhone thats only a tad bigger than the current iPhone 5S). If they do RIP (high end) Android.

I'm pretty sure both companies are very happy with the money they are making with their devices.

The "passion" on this thread, though, is funny.

I have never once seen a tech site flat out state Apple was dying a slow, grueling death. About the worst you see are claims that they're no longer the only player in the market, and they might need to up their game if they want to stay competitive in the long term.

Building a culture of victimhood around a brand is a sad, sad thing, people.

No but I've seen plenty of that Non-sense on these message boards...

You do realize Samsung isn't the only phones with larger than a 4" screen, right? S4, LG, G2, Nexus 5... the list goes on. The problem with this graph is Apple is the only manufacturer selling a phone with iOS on it. Look how many companies sell Android phones. A more fair comparison would be Apple vs. Android phones. If you add all the other companies that make Android phones up, it clearly blows Apple away. I'm sure if other comanies made phones with iOS on it, it would not look nearly as skewed as it does here.
Not sure you read the article or understand it. Apple is at 42% in the US. That means Android's market share is at most 58%. So far from Apple being blown away, if they were to analyze it as you suggest Android is beating Apple by 16 percentage points, down from 30 just one year ago. That's a very steep decline for Android.

The only smartphones I've ever had are iPhones.

I love these absurd, baseless claims that if Apple does XYZ, then people will just absolutely abandon Android like a sinking ship.

Does anyone on this site realize there are LOTS of people in the world who can afford and have either Android or iPhone and CHOOSE Android?

Again let's put this in perspective as it states in the title... 'in U.S. Smartphone...'
This shouldn't be a surprise.

Except that I use a Nexus 4. I would gladly use an iPhone but since I like to buy my phones outright (to use with my T-Mobile family plan), it's difficult to justify spending 2x as much for the iPhone 5s when I can get something like the Nexus 5 for $300. Yes, Android is not as nice as iOS but it's come a long way since Gingerbread. Personally, I'd rather buy a cheaper smartphone (but still a nice one) and use the money I save to upgrade my iPad more frequently (although I just got an Air so I probably won't upgrade too soon). :)

Then you aren't very well read. Apple has been declared dead or in terminal decline at least 63 times. That's in major publications that are either exclusively focused on tech or have dedicated tech coverage and is far from an exhaustive list. Pretty hard to interpret headlines like CBS's recent "Why Apple is a dead company walking" as anything else. You may be correct if your definition of 'tech site' includes only the most reputable ones such as Ars Technica and Anand Tech, but that's a pretty narrow viewpoint.

Not true at all... I've had 4 Samsung LCD/LED TVs, ALL out of warranty and still work perfectly and still have an amazing picture. I wont even touch another brand TV due to the fact how well Samsung TVs have served me.

I cannot speak on other Samsung appliances, as I have not owned any other than their TVs.

Gee, who'd have thought that people like quality phones with quality operating systems over cheaply made plastic things from companies that offer zero support?

Apple Releases new phone which during the time period outsells Samsung:

Tech Media Reaction: . . .

Tech Media Reaction: Oh my god Apple is dead within the year!

They'll say doesn't matter because it's US only.

63 times in 20 years, dating back to '95, when Apple actually was on deaths doorstep. It's only something you see occasionally now. And when you do, 99% of the time, it's clickbait.

Plus it's not like they're picking on Apple specifically here. You see doom and gloom editorials about Microsoft and Google about as often as you do Apple.

And yeah, Ars Technica, Guru3D, and Anandtech are the three I read the most.

I totally accept the fact that a Nexus phone is much more bang for the buck. And hey, if I had too choose only 1 iOS device to buy it would be my iPad Mini (I use it more than my mbp and iPhone combined).

People in the US, the subject of this article, are already abandoning Android like a sinking ship, with Android's share sinking from 65% to 58% in a year. Far from being baseless, it seems Apple needs to do very little to keep this trend going- as people in the US become more familiar with smart phones they are more and more likely to go with Apple.

You are of course right that there is a vibrant, though relatively small, community of people who genuinely like Android. However, most Android owners own Android purely because they can't afford Apple. Most of the rest drink the 'Google is teh open' kool aid which is about as silly as it gets considering we are talking about a company dedicated to mining user data for the benefit of big advertisers. There are also a few Android users who can afford iOS, don't drink the Google kool aid, but really want a big screen. Google can kiss these users goodbye in 2014.

What company are you talking about? I had one issue with my S4 and it was solved immediately by Samsung customer service. My wife had a minor issue with her HTC and got immediate support for her device.

So which companies are you referencing and what is your source?

You make this sound like a small thing.

The USA is 29% of the global consumer market alone.

Bigger than Japan, Germany, China and Italy combined. Bigger than the entire EU.

For Household final consumption expenditure the USA has a whopping $10 trillion. The next closest was Japan with about $3 trillion.

Hyperbole. 65-58% isn't a sinking ship any more than Apple's increase is KILLING the competition with it's recent increase.

As I said before - both Samsung and Apple are doing quite well. And Android isn't going anywhere. Just like Apple and iOS isn't going anywhere.

And quite frankly - I'm glad that there's more than one player. Some may not like Android - and that's totally cool. But if anyone really believes that there shouldn't be options - well - there's really no use in having a dialogue with them.

Yay! I guess the iPhone 5S wasn't as boring as many people made it out to be...

But I never got one :D, my 4S should live long enough for the 6.

Thread like these summary:

Reports that show Apple "ahead": GO APPLE!!!!!!!!!

Reports that show Apple "behind": These reports don't mean anything.

Only numbers I trust are those Apple reports quarterly.
