I don't think Apple is forced to do anything, though they have slashed prices on products in the past, though usually not their newest product. They will probably give it at least a year, but by then the new device would have come out anyway, so it won't feel like there is any drop in price because of unpopularity.

This will never happen. They are facing huge production issues. Supply will be the limiting factor.

What can happen is that because of delay and the high price sales will be relatively low in Spring/Summer. That could make them lower the price for iPhone 11. They could do that without been seeing as having failed. "iPhone X had groundbreaking technology", now the price of production is lower, and that is why we reduced the price to $899.

Cooouuuuuld happen, but the price of X will not be lowered. Not until September 2018. Believe me.

I don’t think they will lower the price on the X. However sales numbers will help them decide how to set the prices for the following year.

Your definition of bad sales will be not the same as apples.

The only thing I see happening is next year Apple reintroducing 128GB. And making that the $999 model and make the 64GB model like $70 cheaper.

LMAO!!!

Alternate title:

"Please don't pre-order. I really want one. If you don't pre-order I have a better shot"

There will come a time when the latest iphone won't sell out in minutes (or seconds), but at this LOW of a price (yes, I said low... because if you can afford a $699 phone but are financially insolvent at $999, you shouldn't be buying a pure luxury item anyway).

And if Apple wanted to sell them for $1999, the situation would be VERY similar. We live in a society where not only is the latest iPhone a status symbol, but it's something that the majority of people believe they "need". Because of that, Apple could almost ask anything they wanted, as long as the low monthly payments were still available. People would NOT stop buying it.

That'll change eventually, but it aint changing this time...

There will be more than enough consumers to purchase the X. The price will not be lowered. Also, need to realize it's not $1000 directly out of pocket. Most consumers will pay $50/mo and sell the X back to Apple in 12 months. At the end of 12 months you don't pay $1000.

an edge to edge OLED HDR Screen, all the tech involved in Face ID, Dual OIS on the cameras. Well worth $200 to me.

The smaller size with basically the same screen size as my 7 Plus is why I'm buying this. I can't stand the Plus in my pocket. The smaller form factor is a big deal to me. The loss of Touch ID I'm not happy about, but it's a minor item to me. I use the code 30-40% of the time to unlock my phone anyway.

Spot on Travis. Spot on.

Ironic that the congressmen that had the gall last year to suggest people prioritize health care over their new iPhone's got lambasted for it. He was right, but the idea that the poor wouldn't be able to have luxury items (like the people who can actually afford it) is offensive to a lot of people.

It's a sad, sad world we live in, but that's not going to change anytime soon. All we can do is gaze in wonder at the food stamp recipient that somehow has an iPhone 8+ (like I saw today, at Fry's, buying groceries.... I wish I was making it up). Why do I get the feeling that if it came down to feeding her family or getting an 8+, it would be an easy decision? Sure, it's a free country, but come ON...

But that's what happens when we live in a society that destroys someone for having the audacity to make a statement on personal responsibility. It emboldens and justifies people just like her. Can anyone make a non-politicized argument that people should be buying an iPhone while on food stamps? Let alone an 8+???

Naw. The only iPhone to ever have that kind of adjustment was the very first one and they really were just guessing when they put it out about how much people would spend. Plus, there was no way to buy it but cash up front (or credit card). No subsidies. Those didn't kick in until the 3G. Now, we do not have US subsidies anymore, but we do have plans like the Apple Upgrade plan, carrier plans such as AT&T NEXT, etc. People need not come straight out of pocket for an iPhone anymore.

So, no. It won't happen. What might happen is that with the next model in this line, they bump up the storage and leave prices the same, or something to that effect, leaving people feeling like they're getting more for their money.

Well said, and I'm in total agreement.

Priorities are out the window when it comes to a new iPhone.

I've got a friend who has been out of work since March... unemployment has ran out and she just started putting serious effort into find a job... with by her own admission about 2 months of living expenses left.

What did she buy 2 weeks ago?

A brand new iPhone 8 Plus from T-Mobile. She upgraded from the 6s Plus like I did. The difference is though... I'm working with a good job.

I asked her what she had to pay and she said "$300 down." I'm like, you know, that's rent money right? You could have waited.

A sad world indeed.

Apple faced a huge backlash from early adopters when they dropped the price of the original iPhone a couple of months after release. Buyers were furious! Apple got enough negative press they offered early buyers $100 credits.

No way Apple is going to make THAT mistake again.

Was it 300 down in cash or was it 300 down via her trade in of the 6s plus? Is this phone her main source of connection to the internet, where she can do things like look for jobs and stay connected to the rest of the world?

Grant you, her financial choices may not be brilliant, but she may simply be down, out, and need this boost while she's hunting for a job. I try my best never to spend other people's money, so to speak. I do not know their true circumstances or their mental states.

Those credits sure were nice, though.

I remember that. I bought mine after they lowered the price.

I suspect not many people here know what you are talking about.

Oh please...

Justifying spending money when you have none. Uh huh

It was $300 down. She gave the 6s Plus (64GB) to her son who had a 16GB 6.

She has an iMac for internet and is using that. I'm definitely not trying to spend her money... just looking out for her and I don't think upgrading with a limited amount of cash on hand while you are unemployed is the brightest decision, but that's just me.

:)
