As for the title of this thread, how can this be anything otherwise? Has Apple given the specs to any supplier before release; doubt it.

I see this being quite costly to "adapt" our various iDevice gizmos to conform to the new connector- but mostly worried about my car cable (which already has to have a scosche power adapter at the end of my cable- so now it will look like- cable, scosche adapter, apple adapter, iPhone. This would be of course if it would actually work- plus looking like crap.

This biggest thing I hope to see change out of this mess is for the Apple only dock connector for everything to go away and switch to a more open standard that everyone can use like bluetooth. The Apple only connector really limits options.
I truly hope this change burns manufactures enough to just go to a standard everyone can use.

Nope, still no new spec showing up on the MFi portal.

Yeah, the title is a little sensationalist... as soon as the new phone is released, Apple will put the connector specification on the portal, and 3rd parties can start making adapters.

Clearly they have the $1 saving so you can put that dollar into a brand new $1 app for your brand new iphone 5. Business 101

If you aren't going to let people compete with you then your cost should reflect it by keeping them low/free. this should include adapters.
You forgot to recommend the government taking over the production of adapter.

Why should Apple release the specifications for a cable that technically does not exist yet? A new phone or dock cable has not been officially announced by Apple.

Is there any indication they will?

No but people are crying foul stating Apple is greedy when they have no idea WHAT they will be doing.

----------

Well, they don't include MagSafe 2 to 1 adaptors with Retina MBPs. They want to push everyone to the new standard as fast as possible (and the extra profit of course doesn't hurt.)

I understand that. But before people start accusing Apple for screwing their customers, which this thread is full of, give them a chance to actually tell us what is going on here, no?

These people consider any company that makes any profit greedy. Facts about specific situations are irrelevant to them. They are electronic anarchists who think bluster and bombast equals intelligence.

Stop meta-whining, this connector sure seems like a douchy move. (And BTW, my meta-meta-whining is due to the Rule of Recursive Complaining.

If you can afford an iPhone and a $80 dollar a month cell phone contract, you can afford an adapter. "Apple *should* include an adapter with every new purchase! " - Why *should* they? They're not switching out the connection to spite consumers. They're innovating and changing the cable after *SIX YEARS*. If you owned a business and customers were saying, " You should do this, cuz we said so! You would tell them to #### right off.

It's not a dollar per cable. Chinese companies aren't what they used to be. Chinese companies make money too. Just because it's cheaper to manufacture in China, doesn't mean it's cheap. Go take a glance at Alibaba.com and you'll see that products from China aren't dirt cheap like a Mexican flea market, and the only reason Apple gets any type of price-break, is because they order by the millions.

Kind of outrageous - they should include the adapter for this first gen new connector and then sell it separately for the 5s next year - just like how the 1st gen iPhone came with a dock.

If they do change the dock connector which people have been saying for years then yes they should do this.....

They should do what?

Name one phone that changed their charging cable design between models and shipped an adapter for last years charger with this years phone and charger.

This is patently ridiculous to even consider, and Apple would be idiots to do so.

Aren't you guys tired of all this proprietary crap ?... Micro-USB could make everything such a lot easier...

The connector type is not on my list of priorities. If it is for you, buy a different phone.

It can be a bit annoying with some devices, have not really noticed an issue for the iPhone.

Anytime I see people take issue with a product it is because they want it to fit their needs, and they want to like it.

this is why people say apple products are over priced.

and $29 for 3? really apple? you act as if that is a value pack. its only $1 save.

I think we'll find this connector MUCH easier to deal with than micro-usb. I understand why Apple chose to make a proprietary connector because frankly, what's out there now sucks. They're a pain to use. I'm so tired of fumbling with connectors that don't insert easily. This should be a big improvement and I hope it drives the way future connectors are designed.

Because the cost is next to nothing given the price of the computer. It's one thing less consumers have to worry about.

Anyway, including adaptors is always a good idea during transitional periods.

Including *necessary* adapters is always a good idea during transitional periods. Including *unnecessary* adapters is a waste of resources.

When buying a new rMBP (which comes with the proper power unit), there is absolutely no point in including an adapter which would never be used.

Unless you'd argue that during the PS2->USB transition that a USB-capable computer, shipping with a USB keyboard and USB mouse, should have come with a PS2->USB adapter for the USB components.

They made the adapters available (cheaply) for the people who can make use of them. Including more of them willy-nilly in situations where the serve no purpose makes no sense at all.

Denied!

Won't be any third party cables as well? Or is that just for the adapters?

I don't think you will see any cheap knock-offs like everyone keeps saying. From what I am hearing is that part of the change to connector is to embed some sort of encryption into the connector. Therefore, the only way to use the connector is to pay "homage" to aPple and they will give the way to access the encryption. That way when products find their way around the encryption, the big "suits" will sue them or charge with violation of the DMCA.

So get ready to keep shelling out $10 for the adapter and $20 for the USB connector cable (which of course came FREE with Galaxy S III).

I guess I just miss the good old days when Apple included "unnecessary" things like s-video and dvi-vga adapters.
