Wait...are you telling me there won't be a FREE WORKING charger/adopter with the new iPhone 5 in the box?

The box will [probably] have a small AC>USB adapter (just like current iPhones), then the new USB>NewDock cable.

They're talking about an OldDock>NewDock adapter (which is the part being sold exclusively [initially] by Apple for $10).

So if you had something like an old style Dock Radio, you'd plug the adapter onto the old dock, then the iPhone 5 onto the new adapter. However, if you're only using the cable for charging, or connecting to a PC, then you don't need an adapter anyway.

Most people won't really NEED one right away. The sync cord will come with it and connect to all your chargers. I have three iPhones in the house and none have "docks" (mostly cause I'm too cheap, and docks are crappy unless you spend$$)

I own several charging cables and so do many other people I know. Personally, I keep one plugged into my wall by my bed and one in my backpack (which comes with me whether I'm going on a trip, to school, or work, so it pretty much comes with me no matter where I'm going.) Rather than buy a second charger, I'd like an adapter so that I can have two ways to charge my newer iOS devices (with the packed in charger, or with an older charger coupled with a packed in adapter.)

In 5 years we'll all look back and laugh about having to connect our devices to any type of cable to do anything.

Doubtful. Wireless charging still requires some sort of docking. People still drive cars without USB that require aux in. We will have 10-30 year old cars five years from. Ow just like we do today. I get where you are cOming from but the cable will not be phased out in a mere five ears especially since the phase out hasn't even started.

I'm a huge Apple fan girl and have converted a number of people, but I'm a bit disgusted by this. I'm all for businesses making money but lets not be greedy! There's some indication Apple is cutting back on retail store staffing to improve their profits and now this news! Come on Apple, you already charge high prices for your products and literally have more money than you know what to do with, let's not turn into just another greedy big company!!!

People, relax.
Samsung will have a cheaper, bigger version on the market in a couple of months.

Well it could be wasteful in theory, but then so are the earbuds, which always stay in my box. But really, who's going to just toss out the adapter? Worst case you give it to a friend who needs an extra. But I have to think after all these years everyone who's ever owned an iOS device has at least one dock connector related accessory.

Yep. :D

I know that. I am saying that need to include an adapter too. Else **** them.

If you need the adapter included, order or buy it when you get your iPhone.

If you want it to be in the same box, then open the iPhone box, find a space in the box for the adapter, and then put the lid back on the box. Presto! Wish Granted.

If you think adapters should be forced on people who don't need them, then buy a lot of them, and go door to door handing them out.

I just hope that this dock adapter will work for my apple dock connector in my car. I would much rather spend $10 for an adapter (free would be best), rather then having to buy an entirely new connector cable from Mercedes for $375+...

Also, I'm not to sure of how well the iPhone will be supported in my iHome dock with the adapter. I would assume that between the adapter and the mini apple dock that it wouldn't have much support... I might just have to get a new iHome made for the new iPhone.

For that matter, I hope that a new iHome will hold a new iPhone securely. That small dock connector looks a bit flimsy...

I'm going to stick with my iPhone 4S for a few more years until the 3rd party product variety for the iPhone 5 connector reaches the level that it's currently at for the 30 pin connector, and when apple loosens its grip on controlling the distribution of the new connector.

I don't understand why anyone thinks they should get an adaptor for the iPhone 4S or iPad charging cable included for free in their iPhone 5 box.

The iPhone 5 will come with its own charging brick and cable. That is clearly all that Apple needs to provide with a new phone.

And one will be. No one ever said otherwise. You think Apple is going to sell a phone that can't be charged without an accessory that is sold separately? Come on.
Um, the article is about a 8 pin to 30 pin adapter, not the new charging cable (which is shown in the article and is admittedly very confusing). Apple will give you a charging cable, sure... but not a new tech to old tech adapter in their new tech box.

Anyone thinking their iPhone 5 purchase will include an adaptor for free will be disappointed.

Apple isn't going to prolong old technology by giving away these adaptors for free. They want you to abandon the old standard and embrace the new. Making you pay $10 separately to buy an adaptor is a good way of incentivising people to forget about the old connector and old devices that support it.

Of course Apples idea of old tends to be devices millions of people still use. When it comes to the adapter it should be included, yet at the same time there will likely be a few million people that will not even need it.

This is nonsensical thinking.

Apple will supply you with a charger for your new phone.

Why would they even consider providing you with an adapter from your new phone to their charger for a prior phone model?

Who does that? Ever?

Likely no one, I am just used to other companies including more with their products then Apple does, they tend to leave out a bit and over charge for them. For me personally, I just need that basic power cord and it does come with the wall plug, that was all I really needed, of course the original cable wore out, those are a dime a dozen on eBay.

Hmm I thought this 9 pin thing was missing the analogue pins that would make the adapter pretty useless anyway?

If that's the case, will they even bother with an adapter? Could make support a nightmare. Can imagine trying to explain to customers that the adapter would work but not for analogue signal, there would have to be a HUGE comparability list for 3rd party products, which isn't really very "Apple".

Hope they raise the quality of the cable

Even though the cost is very high, I do expect the cable to last atleast a few months, if not more..

Look at the other Apple connectors - how hard it has been to get third party chargers for example. Dongles (that fit Apple) for universal chargers - nope, that magnetic connector is Apple-only. Really, how much of the gadget universe do you have to control? Especially power supplies and batteries - these wear out, and your design isn't always the best. License and allow competition.

Right. But the question is, does Apple intend to make themselves the ONLY place you can buy one, at very high prices?

Why is $10 a "very high price". You'll pay $649-$749 for an iPhone and $499-$699 for an iPad, but after that you're too broke to shell out a 10 spot for an adapter for your $40 iHome alarm clock?

I agree with both of these statements. While not really in the market for an upgrade, I will eventually need one and that'll come at a price of either paying for adapters or leaving most of my chargers behind (office, bedside, kitchen, family room, & travel). Either way, such is life and while not totally thrilled, my current phone and dock connector won't suddenly stop working the day the new iPhone is released.

And one will be. No one ever said otherwise. You think Apple is going to sell a phone that can't be charged without an accessory that is sold separately? Come on.

Before the iPod, how often did you buy an electrical item that didn't come with a plug to go into the wall?

people complain about $10 while at the same time admit they bought a $375 cable to connect their phone to their mercedes. And they say apple is gouging?

Also, before iphone, phone makers only included home chargers without an easy way to do car charging or connect to a computer. Apple was leading the way with a detachable USB cable that could plug into any USB power source and connect to a computer. At this time, car adapters sold by carriers were $30 and computer connection cables were $79-$150.

So apple lead the way and has cables included and spares for $20, but we complain.

$10 for a cable? **** that. Why do Apple feel they have to change through the nose on stuff that really should cost very little?
