So Apple is not only synonymous with being greedy, but you can add remorseless to the list.
Pro Tip: An iPod shuffle charger cable plugged into your 3.5mm jack disables the mic. You're welcome.

That would be an option if you didn't have to turn on Siri for CarPlay. This is really the only reason why I turned it on.

To be correct though, I "use" Siri more often: it is repeatedly triggered when I am on the phone speaking English, even though I have trained it in German and I never use the activation phrase. This unintended activation is really the most annoying part of the whole thing.

When speaking to a 96 year old family member who uses hearing aids, he finds that it is best to use speaker on his phone. The Alexa that he was given by a friend will repeatedly interrupt our conversations with nonsensical responses without being summoned. Apparently that is a hazard with all of these devices.

Right it’s a company. Don’t like their services, company it mgmt, then don’t use their products. (Not particularly directed at any one person, but it’s interesting the vitriol from those who participate on these boards whether they use apples products or not)

I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I’ve triggered Siri. Dozens of times with Alexa and Google. Goggle’s recognition is better. Know how they got it that way? Guess. Amazon is always lighting up and asking me what I said. I have zero problems if Apple is looking for problems with different pronunciations and/or of the key phrase or how it understands in different acoustics, as long as it is anonymized. How about if you share the problematic stuff, and Apple can figure out what the failure is? No one will know it’s you... Google does.

Agreed. I'm a regular Siri user and own 5 HP's spread around the house. I have used Siri since inception and have only inadvertently triggered a response 3x I can recall. Despite my disappointment in finding out about the secret audio recordings, secret being the relevant word, I will continue to be a Siri user. Apple doesn't "sell" or market what they use for research, unlike Amazon and Google. While I generally opt-out of Analytics, I can live with in-house R&D transcripts ....not audio.

I think we are all being a bit naive and disingenuous in our "shock" over inadvertent privacy violations by devices designed to "listen" to us in order to complete commands that we give them. There is no way to design/program such devices without that occurring. Even Siri, whose programming requires it to reside in a large data center outside our devices, cannot be improved upon without actual humans listening to erroneous triggers in the system. Giving up some privacy, whether it is in a Cloud environment or from a device we give access to in our homes, comes with the territory. I still will maintain exclusivity within the Apple environment, trusting that they will not sell that privacy for marketing purposes.

If Apple won't let law enforcement break into phones and defeat encryption, then they should not listen into Siri without user consent. That can't have it both ways meaning the can't stand up for wants right unless they want something that is not right.

This is the whole entire reason I will not use Siri: Apple records your voice on every Siri request, and keeps your voice recording on their servers. I do not want my voice recordings on some remote server. Now we know the truth, that Apple listens to some of these voice recordings...so you can't really have 'privacy' at all with this service, because there may be someone on the other end listening to your voice recordings...

"Hello, this is Apple calling you on a recorded line..."

It's just like that. Who wants their voice recordings of every Siri request on servers for eternity?

Is google or Microsoft or amazon any better. Apple stores Siri recordings for six months and that’s it. Not eternity.

Apple says it will continue to review computer-generated transcripts of Siri interactions, even from users who do not opt in.
This I find a big mistake regarding trustworthiness on privacy. It makes the "What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone" look like a deliberate lie.

Does that "grading" take place only in English speaking countries or in other countries and laguages as well?

It's amazing how far Apple fanboys will go to defend immoral practices.

Guess what, people have a right to complain to get the product they use to work how they want it. Just because you're okay with Apple keeping data on you for anything and are have the delusion of "Because it's Apple, it's okay for them to store my transcripts" viewpoint doesn't mean people who know the real world are okay with it. Apple is no more moral than any other company and the fact that Apple is only going to have Apple employees listen to recordings and read transcripts doesn't make me feel better.

What's the difference between a contractor and an Apple employee? Just the company they work for, they are still humans and that means there's a high chance that the person listening to the recording is untrustworthy. Working for Apple doesn't magically make you Jesus.

And the other Side if it is how far “the bashers” will go to criticize anything and everything Apple now matter how small. That’s the other side of it. No grey areas, just black and white.

Some people don’t care about this and others do as evidenced by the varied posts on these threads. One can’t prove “how the masses” feel except through a poll.

Morality I reserve for humans. Apple from all appearances is committed to protecting your privacy. That’s a goal and not an end point.

there are obvious legal differences. As far as the job they do for the company, none.

Like Snowden was untrustworthy?

Here was I thinking when I checked Don't Share Data with Apple… I wouldn't be sharing data with Apple. Even opting out for Siri sharing, still sends transcripts…
Apple clearly hasn't learnt the lesson yet.

They will in due time. Tim Cook can't be CEO forever :)
