What about developers that rely on UUID to fight piracy ? Like beejiveim does or used too ?

As a developer, these evolutions are just a cost of doing business. The UDID changes have been in effect for quite some time. Retina support is very simple for most apps, as is support for the 4" screen.

Can I just say that using the "Unique Device Identifier" is a stupid idea in the first place, because it links to the physical device. So when a user sells his iPhone and buys a new one, the UDID now links to the new owner, while the link to the previous owner is lost. So all the information that is stored for that UDID now refers to a totally different person.

----------

So what are iPhone users losing as far as functionality with this UDID change ?

Nothing. Using Unique Device Identifiers allows mischievous companies to link the activities of one device with different apps, which is a huge privacy concern. There are much better ways to identify one user of one app. For example if you want to keep high scores in a game, UDID would keep the high score for that iPhone, and after selling your iPhone that high score goes to the next users. It is quite easy to create an ID that will move with the app to a new device.

Here's the trap: UDID and UUID are very different things. The first one is stupid, allows privacy invasion, and is getting banned. The second doesn't have all these problems.

What about the non-retina ipad mini?

The ipad mini will get the retina compatible apps with the retina images and will use the non retina images.

It gets a little bit harder to make apps wich fully support all kind of devices.

I hope apple will make it possible of older devices to get the latest ios.

Have you considered swapping to EE 4G? I was with EE/Orange on an 8 month old iPhone 4S contract and used their Swap&Go thing to get a 5. The whole operation cost me 25£ giving them my old 4s.
Monthly fee wise, I'm paying the same and in theory I should get half the Internet allowance but the guy at the store said that as a bonus, I'd get double the allowance for the whole length of my new contract.
To sum it up, I'm paying the same, getting exactly the same but on an upgraded service and phone. I'm really impressed with LTE, I have to say.

I am considering it but it is really expensive! I have an unlocked sim free phone and their sim free tariffs are totally ludicrous! I'm hoping that they drop slightly if the other networks come out with lower cost 4G networks, until then my 12 month sim-only from Orange finishes this October, so we'll see what it looks like then... I do want the LTE goodness though!

LTE is brilliant. How much are their sim free tariffs, roughly? I'm paying 36/month for unlimited calls, texts and 1GB data, plus the underground wifi (which I have to say, has made the tube slightly more bearable).

Finally, something Apple is doing that I actually agree with...

I know. I mostly disagree with most of Apple's new policies, which are thinly veiled attempts to remove functions, but this one makes sense for a change.

Retina is required for IOS devices also.

Starting May 1, new apps and app updates submitted to the App Store must be built for iOS devices with Retina display and iPhone apps must also support the 4-inch display on iPhone 5.

What will this mean for iPad 1 users? No more apps compiled for iOS 5?

And like mentioned earlier, the only iOS6 constraint is the Vendor and Advertising ID thing. You don't have to use it. Instead you can create your own UUID and manage it in the app's NSUserDefaults.

My app got rejected in January 2012 for using the UDID. We switched to a UUID and have had no troubles since. My app runs on everything from a 3GS up to the latest, natively and universally. The amount of graphics I have to include has ballooned, but other than that, it's been easy to support all of that.

I see not requirement for Apple to abide by this new mandate.
I guess they want to obtain/have all UDID's to themselves for their own marketting plan.
Smart and sneaky.

I have the impression you don't have the slightest idea what a UDID is.

Amen to this! it is so disappointing that these lazy developers still have not updated their apps for iPhone 5 so I am still using iPhone 4s in some apps...

It's not sneaky. A UDID is nothing compared to the private API. With that they can do anything. For example, not just anybody can write a Phone app for iOS. Apple can because they have that private API.

Why? Updated apps will still run on iPad 1. What are you afraid of ?

Updated apps that support iOS5 still run on iPad 1. FTFY.

Finally!

I'm more interested in the mandatory retina and 4" screen updates. My bank (TD) has the most absolutely horrid app and it's remained low resolution for the past 3 years since the iPhone 4. This will force them to either redo the app or just admit that they don't care about their online customers and leave it not updated (despite critical bugs that need fixing).

There are some apps that only run under iOS 6 or higher. I still have two iPads 1, and don't want these to become obsolete.

Then don't update the apps. Granted, iOS should provide some sort of safety that prevents apps from being updated to beyond the ability of the version number of the OS currently installed. But your iPad will do everything and more than what it did when you bought it. Just don't update the apps if they're stable.

Apple should provide both the new version of the app plus the latest version compatible with the iPad 1.

I had to reinstall one of the iPads, and didn't have the iOS 5 compatible version of an app, so I could no longer use it. In iTunes I had the latest version of the app, as it updated automatically. And for some reason, I couldn't find the older version in Time Machine.

I live out of London so the latter is not applicable to me but they are £21 for 500mb data, unlimited calls/text.

At the moment my orange plan is £15.50 for 500mb data, 600min and unlimited text but because I'm under 24 I get an extra 1gb data and unlimited calls to orange/tmobile.

The nearest equivalent plan is £26 for 1gb or £31 for 3gb... pretty ridiculous prices for a sim only if I'm honest. If they were £16/£21/£26 I'd probably have considered it more!

Your Apple device finger print?
From there, Apple can track your behavior on what you do with your phone and your searches/uses and target advertising to you or may be pass on your data mined info to "partners."

buh bye

Ah, the joys of under 24: special deals for everything and railcards... ;)

I am getting a little tired of reading this "Apple is making it harder and harder on developers!" No they are not. Any true software developer who are making production based software should be used to this sort of thing. They should already know how to support all the stuff Apple is "forcing" us to support. Plus software developers should be well aware by now of some stuff becoming unsupported.
