As long as so many people are posting "bend" cracks, I'll add mine:

Apple could construct an entire ad campaign around the American Breed's classic hit song:

"Bend me, shape me
Anyway you want me;
Long as you love me, it's all right!"

-----------------------------------------------------------

It continues:

"Bend me, shape me
Anyway you want me;
You got the power to turn on the light!"

--------------------------------------------------------

Picked up an iPad Mini 4 for $250 on Black Friday.

Still, it would be good to see Apple put out an iPad Mini 5. Don't care about Touch ID or Face ID (use it home and like instant on with smart cover); bezels are of no concern (too thin and harder to hold).

However, I would like to see major camera upgrades--a flash added, faster lens for low light photography, optical image stabilization, even a second lens.

The Mini is a marvelous size for taking photos and showing them off!

I would love nothing more than to see a new iPad mini. I would seriously have a hard time waiting the usual one to two months that I do following an Apple product launch (to ensure that any immediate QC issues are no longer around) before I used money I don't even have to buy one.

Alas, I'm still not convinced that this is actually going to happen. I do, however, believe that Apple will still be ordering that 7.9" display and be using it elsewhere, given that it was widely theorized that the iPad mini 4 was left with a lone 128GB model due to the nature of supplying that display. Also the flip-flopping that MR's usual sources (Kuo, DigiTimes, etc.) have had on the topic of the would-be iPad mini 5. But, beyond that, there isn't enough evidence to support that there's even a sizable market for it.

Furthermore, 10" iPad seems downright nonsensical. Either stick with the 9.7" form factor that has been around since day 1 in 2010 or switch to the 10.5" size that the still-sold 10.5" iPad Pro has. But don't introduce yet another screen size that developers will take a zillion years to adapt their apps to. Hell, it took Facebook three years to make a version of the Facebook app that works natively with the first and second generation 12.9" iPad Pro's resolution!

Yeah, but the question is...will the 10” be the same physical size as the 9.7 but with a bigger display and thinner bezels? Same for the ipad mini. Will Apple keep it 7.9” but with slimmer bezels (so smaller physical size) or increase screen size to 8.5” and keep the same physical size but with slimmer bezels. Hmmm.

I'd be happy to see a new iPad mini and I think they could continue to place it as a cheap alternative without the latest and greatest SoC and camera.
As for the entry level I guess they'll eventually move to the same resolution as the iPad pro 10'' but I'm not sure they'll make a new model next year, a simple specs bump with a new SoC would be enough for the base model.

The current Mini 4 has a higher resolution then the new top of the line iPad Pro models. It has 326 pixel per inch while the Pro has only 264 ppi. LOL! I own three Minis! Check the specs if you do not believe me!

Apple, if they release the new Mini with bottom level of the cheap components; they will likely alienate a lot of current Mini owners who want to upgrade. They think the Mini is top of the line not bottom of the line. These owners can afford to pay for quality stuff. There will be few owners of the current one that will buy and settle on junkey, budget, bottom of the barrel crap components that Apple is going be rumor to be releasing. Come on Apple, you are suppose to be "luxury". Do not become a Chinese startup company making cheap junk!

I will wait it out to see how the new Mini 5 will fair maybe buy it in 2020! Have have two new Mini 4 already!

iPad lineup is becoming more confusing than the Mac lineup. Does this mean iPad mini 5 will keep the iPad mini 4 form, iPad 10" will replace iPad 9.7" and take the iPad Pro form?

It is a bit confusing in this “transition” of product design. I felt befuddled just trying to answer my wife when she asks, “So, the 2018 9.7” iPad is the newest one?” And then, “is this as good as the iPad Air?” Or “But it’s not a pro?” Then “But it I thought the pencil only came with the pro?” And finally “How many pencils?” Hahahha

The real insult will be if the 2019 uses the pencil 1st gen, whereas the “pro” uses the 2nd gen. AFAIC wake me up when they release an entry-level 12.9.

Well, the current 2018 ipad uses the 1st gen pencil. Is that insulting? Hey, i hope both the 2019 regular ipad and the new ipad mini get apple pencil 2 support. That would be sweeet. I think ultimately Apple wants to only have one apple pencil, and will phase out the first gen at some point. Realistically tho, i think Apple may extend the first gen apple pencil for one more year and wait until the 10th anniversary of the ipad in 2020 for the redesign. But who knows.

How is it not Apples problem that they unnecessarily change the screen size every year, also changing the aspect ratio this year? Isn’t this what all Apple users made fun of Android devices about? Million different sizes and aspect ratios?

I don't think you understand what the actual concern was then, in that case. Many different companies each one producing many different phones with different screen sizes, ratios and resolutions made very difficult for developers to offer tailored interfaces. We are talking about at least several dozens of variations in this case.

The current iPad lineup offers 5 variations. As a UX designer, that is, something that in this case knows what it's talking about, I can tell you that two of those (10.5'' and 11'') are so similar they don't require different interface design. So, we are down to 4. 4 vs. several dozens, you can see how it's a very different problem. Honestly you don't actually need to design a different interface for iPad from 9.7'' to 11'', and that would include a new 10'', because it wouldn't substantially improve the user experience interaction design-wise, like when going, for example, from 9.7'' to 12.9''.

The fact that between these sizes the interaction design stay the same doesn't mean at all they are unnecessary. The reason Apple keeps increasing the size is to offer a more immersive experience when watching video or playing , showing more content per screen in text applications, more pictures, a bigger canvas to draw and so on. This effectively improve the user experience even if it doesn't affect the interaction design. So it's a win-win situation for both developers and users, to have an improved experienced and a wider choice of the devices (without a 12.9'' iPad Pro and a 7.9'' mini, there would be less iPad users and therefore less potential buyers of apps).

I guess there are some developers that single-handedly developer their apps, or very small shops, that consider a problem having to design for different screens. I can't tell what to do obviously. What I would do is to be pragmatic. Design for the more common resolutions my user base use. Offer the same design for very similar sizes. On web, doing 3 versions of a website (phone, tablet, desktop) is the norm, and we are talking about 3 very different designs (double the resolution on from the other).

Should Apple offer 1 iPad size, or 1 iPhone size? Obviously no, it would be ridiculous. They would lose customers, there would be less prospective buyers of app.

I think the problem is many people are too western-centric and they don't realise, or worst, care, about the fact that Apple also sells in countries that are way more budget conscious. I think it's the main reason they now offer a wider selection of products with what some people can perceive as "quality compromises", like the entry-level iPad.

I think the same applies to people saying "oh, they sold more cheap iPad than expensive iPads, I understand the market, Apple doesn't". Well think about the fact there are billions of people that can afford a $329 device but could *never* afford a $649 one, let alone a $1299, maybe? Do people really need to be remembered not everyone in the world is rich? Or that, if you have a low budget, you shouldn't want high-end devices? How is weird that cheaper products sell more than expensive one?

That's not Apples problem.

By the way, I believe the App Store is slowly dying.

I know literally no-one who bought a paid app, maybe a really small In-App purchase.
I cannot recall wether Apple has bragged about the payouts to devs recently.

Considering the hardware lineup, with limited Xcode support, I know lots of people who simply stopped developing.
Also, GDPR, Terms and Conditions, etc. play a role for small devs.

Because most apps that are used that cost money are through subscriptions - Netflix, Hulu, Adobe, Office, Dropbox, etc...

We use them, we pay for it. Just not through the App Store directly.

My last paid app in the store was in 2017

I am glad that finally market forces (i.e. consumer demand) have begun to impact Apple product decisions.

Apple Exec: Why won't people buy what we want to sell them!?!
Apple Jr Exec: I suppose we could build the products they keep asking for?
Apple Exec: It's just crazy enough to work.

You can make a new product people don’t want that end up buying but once the products exist, people tend to use their wallet to show if the next model releases is what they want or not.

Look at XS and XR phone sales. People can’t afford $1500 phones

I wonder why you ask this question. Pencil 2nd gen was introduced at the October event whereas the iPad 2018 was introduced in March. In other words, there was no Apple pencil 2nd gen when the 2018 iPad was introduced.

I was being funny. I know what you meant. And i said i agree with you about the Apple pencil. I don’t see Apple keeping two pencils for much longer. However, they still have a bunch of 10.5” ipad pros, older 12.9” pros and last years 9.7” ipad that use the first gen pencil. I would imagine Apple wants to deplete stock before discontinuing the first gen pencil. Thats why i was thinking they might wait until 2020 before giving the regular ipad and possibly ipad mini a radical redesign and pencil 2 support. Makes sense, cause 2020 is the 10th anniversary of the ipad.

Hey, i hope i’m wrong and Apple gives the 2019 regular ipad as well as the mini apple pencil 2 support. I would love a mini ipad with face id, thinner bezels and the ability to use the 2nd gen apple pencil. Thatd be so friggin sweet.

Just not expecting it. That way, i wont be dissapointed. Regardless, i am nabbing the next iPad mini as my ipad mini 2 is dying.

Apple is preparing to launch a new fifth-generation iPad mini in the first half of 2019, according to sources in the Apple supply chain cited by the China Times, followed by a new entry-level iPad in two versions.

ipad-9-7-low-cost-ipad-mini-4.jpg

The report, first spotted by Japanese blog Mac Otakara, claims that Apple is preparing to launch a low-priced so-called iPad mini 5 in the first half of next year in an attempt to halt a general decline in iPad sales, with mass production expected to start by the end of December.

Apple hasn't updated its smallest iPad since September 2015, but the device did receive a price cut in March 2017, with a 128GB capacity model costing $399.

Reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed in October that Apple is working on a new version of the iPad mini with an upgraded processor and a lower-cost display panel, with the device being launched in 2018 or early next year.

Notably, Kuo's prediction came two months after DigiTimes said it did not believe Apple plans to introduce an updated iPad mini, and in fact has "no further plan" for the smaller tablet.

As for Apple's entry-level iPad, today's report claims that next year Apple will replace its sixth-generation 9.7-inch iPad with a similarly priced model that features a 10-inch display within a narrower frame.

Following strong sales of the 2017 model, Apple is said to be launching two low-priced versions of the iPad in 2019 to boost sales growth. A more exact timeframe for launch was not given beyond the "second half" of 2019. Apple's 9.7-inch iPad was last updated in March 2018 and in the same month the year before that.

Apple's 9.7-inch iPad is thicker, heavier, and has fewer features than iPad Pro models, but it does support Apple Pencil and is also Apple's most affordable tablet, starting at $329.

Today's report goes on to say Apple plans to reduce production costs of the two iPads by reducing the amount to LED procurement in Japan and switching to Korean-made LED displays.

The new iPad Mini Curve.... now ships pre-bent so you dont have to bend it! The new device will have a random amount of built-in curvature that Apple provides at the factory as a courtesy. Don’t want a curved or bent iPad? Tough. That’s all Apple makes anymore. Buy a real computer or an Android tablet if flat appeals to you.

Apple. It's the Little Things.

PSA for those that can’t wait, Target has the Mini 4 back down to $250. I miss my old one that I bought new in 2015, took the bait today knowing that it’ll be a good hand me down for my toddler if/when Apple offers me a new Mini to upgrade to and I can find a deal on it.

The first leaked images just came in people!

Ugh those bezels. Passsss. Apple has really lost their way, I wish jobs was still alive.

Yeah. I missed my mini4 after is sold it, after not using it buuut I love my pro. Imo the $399 mini is a joke for outdated specs. If you want a mini, grab the deal at target. There is no confirmation or guarantee that Apple will release a mini. After all, “Rumor season 2019” is upon us.

I’m sure someone will find code in ios13 that gives us somewhat an idea if it’s gonna happen.

I don’t think it’s gonna happen, must be a nightmare for devs and the lineup would be worse than the MacBook/air/mbp Line. Also, I remember am interview with cook about the mini a few years ago, pretty much he said bigger screen phones will cannibilize the iPad mini, and it looks like the time is here with the iPhone Xs Max nearing that screen size with about an inch short.

They need to kill the fragmentation and get all idevices sold onto faceid
I agree. I really hope MacBooks and iMacs get Face ID.

Total joke at $399 for sure. At $250 I’ll enjoy it for a little while and not worry too much when I pass it on to my toddler.

If there’s one thing I’m absolutely 100% positive about when it comes to Apple products, it’s that I will never want a Plus or Max-sized phone. Never. The iPad Mini’s 7.9” screen is quite a bit bigger than simple diagonal screen measurements suggest over the Max, so my pockets and I much prefer a normal sized phone and a Mini for my casual tablet needs around the house mostly.

Here come the good news stories to get our minds off the bad news.
These are not stories. They are unfounded rumors. A huge difference. Seems like you fall for fake news. Apple is alright they are not going anywhere anytime soon. Do your own research and think for yourself and use logic.

Not sure where going but know where they have been. Just lost over 1/3rd of stock value in less than 3 months.

Wrong. It is a story, about a rumor. It is a good news rumor for some, and subsequent story about said rumor. There’s nothing fake about the rumor — the rumor exists, nor the story about the rumor reporting it, nor the positive feelings it evokes in some. The rumor may be unfounded, but it’s definitely real, and makes an impact in the world, and specifically on these forums.

Santa Claus is an unfounded rumor, but one about which many stories are written, bringing many good feelings to those around the world. We know Santa is fake, but he’s also very real. And I’d put more belief in this iPad mini rumor than Santa.
