Battery life and processing power are the only concerns with the Go if you want to use it as a daily driver. I believe that there are ways listed on Reddit to stretch the battery life to 7–9 hrs. However, I don’t recommend it because the device might struggle if it’s not optimized like Microsoft makes it.
A true 7” Microsoft device would suck because it’s not enough real estate for point and click imo. Plus, Microsoft products aren’t optimized enough like iPads for just tablet usage.
In reality, iOS can’t be compared to a full fledged x86 OS. The iPad Pro 2018 is too limited for my needs because of the OS not having point and click or x86 capabilities. Though the processor is sufficient enough to run some variation of OS X.
Apple’s refusal to make a touchscreen x86 experience is annoying.
From what I understand stretching the battery life involves purposefully throttling the CPU, not something I'd enjoy doing on what is arguably already an underpowered tablet.
I agree that windows on 7" isn't completely ideal. I had this setup with my Mipad 2 for a while and it wasn't as bad as you think, but certainly not optimal. The thing is I didn't find I had a need for a full OS on a 7" tablet. But then again some users like to hook up their surfaces to external monitors/KM so in that sense it still makes sense. But I've always felt that iOS' tablet "simplicity" and ease of use was really exaggerated and/or windows ease of use was unnecessarily trashed. What got to me on the Mipad was how dog slow it was, the CPU sucked and it only had 2gb of RAM. Now it's only used to play lullabies to my baby and even then I still want to break it in half.
I completely agree that iOS in many ways cannot be compared, but my comparison is based mainly on SIZE. There is no 7" windows tablet, at least not in today's market, so there really isn't a choice for me other than to either get a non-pocketable tablet like the Go and sacrifice battery life, or get a fully pocketable device like the mini 4. For that pocketable device I only need dumb tablet features, mainly consumption stuff. Of course my needs most likely differ from yours. The Go is a cool little tablet, if they could increase the battery life to a reasonable 8 hours (and I don't mean 8 hours on their video test, but 8 hours of "real world" use) and slim down the bezels to make it a physically smaller device I'd probably be all over it. In thinking about it I would probably still miss a lot of stuff that a full OS offers, even on a 7" tablet.
If Apple made a x86 touchscreen tablet you better bet I'd ditch Microsoft in a heartbeat. It will never happen though as it would cannibalize their sales and their goal to make the consumer believe they need 2 devices. What really bums me out about the ipads and ipad pros is how crappy their peripheral setup (or lack of it) is. No SD cards. Only a single connector, even if they make is USB-C you will still need a dongle to run multiple devices. No mouse support at all. Peripherals such as their branded keyboard are AWFUL, simply atrocious. If Apple wants to market the ipad pro as a PC replacement they need to step up to the plate and make it a PC replacement.
As an aside I must say that Microsoft finally hit it with the surface pro 6, I'm finally really enjoying it. The battery life is phenomenal, not far off the ipad pro's battery life in "real world" use and I find myself not worrying about battery life anymore. I've always said the sticking point for the surface pro to be a better device all around was battery life, and it seems we are finally here. If Microsoft applies this to the Go I can see it becoming an incredible little tablet.

I think the iPad mini will be a budget device.

I agree with this. I think it will loose the laminated display.
Yeah most likely for that price range. The question is why would anyone upgrade to the new mini then? Surely Apple will throw something in there to entice buyers, or I suppose they could just stop selling the mini 4 and force new buyers to the mini 5. But for us existing users (I have 3 mini 4's at home) I don't see a proc upgrade as making me want to go buy a new mini 5. My mini 4's run just fine with everything I throw at them, including iOS 12 and even games. Maybe iOS13 will make the new proc necessary, but I hope we aren't forced to downgrade our screens.
