I've got an external mouse running on my 12" 1 Ghz PB, but it's a (wired) logitech mouse, so the problems are probably independent. Unless maybe it's some sort of peripheral input device problem? The keyboard thing was so infrequent that I probably won't have any idea whether or not it has been addressed by this update, but I'd be happy if it never happened again.

Is this the real reason for the upgrade?

I may be wrong... but I remember reading an article a few months back which said that the reason that the wireless keyboards were not bundled with new macs was because they weren't activated at start up and so you couldn't use them during the start up process and so in some cases would still require a wired keyboard.

I have just noticed that since applying the update I can move the cursor as soon as it appears during the start up process.

Does this now mean that you can use the keyboard during start up and therefore new macs are going to be bundled with wireless keyboards and mice?

It happened to me too once few days ago. Actually I did act like a windoze
user and restarted the laptop instead of turning off and on the keyboard...bad sign...someone know a good doctor here?

Apple's mice are WORTHLESS! It's truly unbelievable that they don't use a two button mouse w/scroll wheel. It's embarrassing really. I have a box of unused mice that came with every mac I have purchased.

no, they're not. having only one button forces software developers to think about their GUI usability and leads into better programs that are easier to be used. and they are by their nature compatible with both left and right-handed users, and function 100% the same way apple portable's trackpads do.

i switched only two years ago and remember missing two-button scroll-wheel mouse for a while. now that i have used the apple bt mouse for a month, i have never missed the second button. and the scroll wheel even less.

if you like, you can send me one pro-mouse. my imac's mouse broke and i now have to use a 2-button logitech instead, and it's ugly.

Exactly. It's hard to convince many-button mouse users that they can use a mouse one button... but the truth of the matter is that you don't NEED multiple buttons to become productive in OS X, everything simply works with one button. I switched last summmer, used multi-button mice until a few months ago, when I purchased an Apple Wireless Mouse. Took a week to get used to it... now I don't see myself buying anything other than Apple mice... and don't see myself needing 7 buttons all over my mouse. In situations where I don't know the program I'm working with, I think I'm MORE productive with one button because I don't have to think to try to accomplish things. In well known programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, etc), I'm just as productive as before.
Honestly, its funny how crazy people can get just thinking of the concept of having a single mouse button... I know PC users who have never used a Mac who shudder at the thought of using one mouse button. In my opinion the ability to be as productive with one button as many just proves that the MacOS is superior in organization and functionality.

I have to completely agree. Apple's mice are great, they are not worthless in the slightest. Ever heard of control-click? It's just as easy to do as right click, in fact, when I'm at a PC I catch myself doing it even when I have a right click mouse.

However, a scroll wheel would be nice for websurfing (but that's about it).

:) I don't have a mouse but my keyboard was updated successfully and...

...I thought it was a tad faster to respond when first used, but then thought this would be placebo until 5 other people who used my machine said exactly the same thing, and they didn't know I updated it. I told them the batteries were running low when they asked :)

Maybe this will make me better at games...maybe

Occasionally my wireless keyboard would go crazy like it had a couple of stuck keys, and switching it off and then back on helped. It's only happened a few times (3 or 4 since Christmas), but hopefully this update will help. If I remember correctly, it would happen just after waking up, after the first couple of keystrokes. Anyone else have this problem?

Yeah I've had this problem, especially when using the down arrow to scroll (You have to when there's no scroll wheel on a BT mouse!) I have to turn my keyboard off and back on.

I thought it might just be a fault with my keyboard and was going to take it back, but i'll see if this update fixes the problem.. anyone else had this problem?

Oh one other thing that I haven't seen yet in this forum (sorry if has been posted) how about this release is in order to support the ipod like patented scrolling system that apple are (hopefully) going to put on their new mouse. How about that new scrolley touch sensitive mouse in the next few weeks?!

That french site with the pic looked sweet! It'd be about 80 smackers though!

It would sure be nice if that was an option - they'll not make it standard, but it'd be a nice thing to add at a reduced price.

Decreased battery life since update

I'm using rechargeable NiMH rechargeable batteries in both my keyboard and my mouse and ever since I upgraded, the batteries won't last a DAY. I switched both my keyboard and mouse batteries last night since it displayed the low battery warning. And now, it's telling me to replace them again. Anyone else notice crappy battery life?

Also, I checked the battery levels in the system preferences when it told me I had low battery. It showed that I still had 1/3 of my battery life left. This really sucks, the other batteries are still charging when my keyboard ones died again, so I'm typing this on the PowerBook keyboard.

I need another firmware upgrade to fix this one!

ps. I don't turn off the kb/mouse at night. When I used the original alkalines, not turning it off never gave me problems.

Firmware updates should be more streamlined. They should be like all Software Update, quick and one-click. No need to unstuff the updater, keep in in Applications/Utilities and run it seperately. That's just BS.

I haven't noticed much difference on my BT Mouse with 1.1 so far. The firmware update one before this one was a significant update, including a new button in the BT System Preferences which read:

"Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer"

But this latest update hasn't added anything of that kind. Hope it somehow increases the battery life though, that would be the only fix I think it needs.

that wake up from sleep, has always been there... perhaps its time for glasses...

NiMH batteries can cause problems. Because they have a slightly lower nominal voltage, a monitoring circuit cannot properly gauge the true remaining capacity like the alkaline batteries you're asked to use in the manual. Look around for some nice 1.5v NiMH cells and dump those nasty 1.2 or 1.4v cells you have ;)

The first thing I did look at was the manual. It explicitly says "You can also use lithium or rechargeable AA batteries in the keyboard/mouse." The ones I have are 1.2 V. If the lower voltage does make the battery reading inaccurate, would the lower voltage decrease battery life? These are the same type of batteries I use in my Canon A40 and they knock the socks off any alkalines I throw in that. I figured that if they work well in my camera, they would perform as well in keyboards/mice.

Anyways, they were working fine BEFORE I installed the firmware upgrade. It's after I upgraded that the batteries started dying. All was good before. Anyone else have any ideas?

Longer Battery life!!!

You might not know this, but the update was mainly to implement Apple's new POB (Power Over Bluetooth) technology. Your Mac now charges the keyboard and mouse batteries, as well as any other Bluetooth devices in the vicinity that have been updated to take advantage of the technology.

On a more serious note...but still somewhat relevant:

I got my Bluetooth phone earpiece to work as the audio in/out for my Mac. Cool during iChat. Yeah, mostly useless, but cool.

Perhaps I'm the millionth person to do this.

BT conflict

Installed both mouse and keyboard, but then could not isync my nokia phone via BT anymore... plus during syncing both the keyboard and the mouse connection was lost and did not come back automaticly....
Did this happen to anyone else? Any suggestions how to fix this? Sorry, if this question was already posted and answered... Thanks.

I was given a wireless keyboard today:D by the CEO as he will not switch to OS X

He refused to take any money at all. cheekily I asked if he had a wireless mouse too.
