ah, I see all you anal perfectionists are closing ranks. why not get a group rate with a shrink (maybe go to Germany for the sessions. I lived in Germany for over three years--it's a beautiful country. I'm quite sure you will love it over there)

group rate with a shrink ? nice tip for sure.

There's a difference. A perfectionist would buy an iPod with a light leak and determine that the device does not live up to their standard and return it and look for an alternative device. (they wouldn't exchange it because of the overwhelming reports of light leakage)

Disagree with this. If it weren't for this forum, Apple would have far less returns than what they have had. No one would be returning iMacs because the bottom 10th of the screen has a slight hint of blue and doesn't register correctly on the 'bs'ometer, or the issue with yellow screens, or the issue with wifi, or the issue now with light leakage. Funny when you see people in the Apple store under tables trying to show the genius something that is miniscule or simply not there.

Either way, this forum not only perpetuates perfectionism, it makes perfectionists out of the average user.

Actually...

I have an ipod touch fourth generation; the buttons on it just randomly died. So I called applecare and explained the problem. I also mentioned light leaks, which I was unhappy about but ignored.

Anyway, they put me on the phone with someone higher in technical support, who explained to me that light leaks are generally caused by the assembly of the ipod itself being "off", specifically, how the glass unevenly meets the case and needs adjustment. If the ipod is sent to applecare for light leaks instead of instantly exchanged (which he conceded most stores can do, but mine couldn't because it was engraved), then the ipod will get fixed.

I verified that this is probably true; the right edge of my ipod was sort of like sharp metal sticking out; I always though it was so your finger could trace the border of the glass, but then I noticed there was no "rim" effect on the left side of my ipod (where there were no light leaks).

So it was off by a few nanometers.

Anyway, the staff said do not ignore light leaks, because they're caused by the glass being installed improperly, and if not fixed, dirt and moisture can get into the ipod, breaking it. And it seemed, instead of swapping them out, best is to call Applecare, explain the problem, and ask for them to adjust the glass. Most representatives who aren't high up on the technical support totem pole do not know what light leaks are or what causes them on the current ipod touch 4. And again, its important to fix it.

Third of all, I don't understand what your problem is Botoxopfer. Do you want to know if you can exchange for light leaks or if the light leaks are a big deal? Past all the insults, I'm not sure.
I opened this thread to see if I can to anything else than going to the Apple Store. And if Apple does exchange Light Leaks.

THANK YOU! That was the answer I was looking for

I hope someone in Munich can fix the display :)

No, but it's stupid of you to be calling ME stupid when you can't spell "perfectionist". Also, "iPod" isn't written as "Ipod". Now go away and educate yourself!
I didn't want to insult you, I just wanted to point out that it makes no sense to judge over a problem you haven't seen.

Sorry for the mistakes but I'm in fact German and not a native speaker. :)

edit:

That is exactly what I meant with sharp edges on my Ipod. The "rim" effect is on the right side on my iPod though, the light leak is at the volume buttons. So for me there is no correlation between the two for me. Since the light leak is barely noticable in a pitch black room and the "rim" effect occuring on every iPod Touch 4 I have seen so far I'm not going to exchange it.

But please keep me updated if the "rim" effect is gone when you get it back from Apple.

Ok.

Good luck on your trip to the Apple Store! :)

I will make sure to keep this in mind if this happens to me. This should be put on a sticky....

Again, that points to a hole in your ipod, and it is worth fixing. It doesn't matter I guess that its not on the glass.

If you have an issue, I'd keep trying at multiple Apple stores until you get the result you want.

I had a similar issue with the Apple store near my home. I was trying to exchange for a light leakage problem and they made me feel like, I was stupid. The manager was not any better, very young and had no respect for anyone. I refuse to make trips to different store to get the result I was looking for. Called AMEX and refused the charge, it took a few days for Apple to call me, they offered to send me a new one and ship the defective one back. I refused and made them contact the store and I went in and watched the disrespectful fools eat crow. :D

You sound like every retail store's worst nightmare. You carry on and on about minor issues like its the end of the world. god forbid you had something REAL to worry about, like your loved ones getting cancer, etc.

I take it then that YOU don't believe in the customer being right? I know if I had a problem with my iPod Touch, I'd want to exchange it for a new one, because as one of the posters here said, if the problem isn't fixed, moisture could end up leaking into the device which in turn could cause even worse damage.

It's not a minor problem. It is definitely a large problem. Like the previous poster said, it signifies a hole, which can destroy the iPod, which is a rather expensive device. He/she had every right to do that. It was poor service.

Why would he go into a Apple Store for a relative having cancer?
