I've seen a few other people demonstrating this. It is an amazing idea and concept like the magic eye images.

Very cool but not new

I swear all of this "new" VR / AR stuff has been popping up in the last year mostly due to the fact that the 90's era Jaron Lanier VPL patents have expired. Jaron could made me mistake of drinking the socialist Berkeley Kool Aide and that may have ran VPL into the ground.

Either way, this demo is all good stuff. I'm sure Hefner's Law (i.e. "Any new medium's first application is pornography") will play out big on this one. Only a matter of time when some porn star gets 3D scanned for this medium and those who can't get a date will be buying these interactive 3D porn game at $50 a pop!

Personally, I want to see a good air combat game using this. A WWI biplane fight game would be killer on this!

Fuji's 3D camera looks interesting

3D is here to stay. I believe that in less than 10 years we'll wonder how we ever did without it. I read about the Fuji Finepix REAL 3D W1 camera about 6 months ago, which can even record 3D video, and doesn't need glasses. It looks like a big leap in 3D technology. I can't believe Steve Jobs wouldn't want one of these, or at least influence Apple products:

facial possibilities

wouldn't it be possible to use the isight camera(built into every current mac display) and a layer of facial recognition technology to get this same effect?(facial recognition to see where the position of the eyes are)
that way the user doesn't have to wear infared lights on their face :) it's intuitive and doesn't require the user do anything alien or invading to use the new feature :) and they could use it on near 70 percent of the macs currently in circulation...(if not more) which would allow apple to... "bring this new immersive technology to their current fan base, and offer yet another feature on a scope that their competitors simply cannot match" making yet another reason to switch.

this could also bring new possibilities and feasibility to a tablet, although not enough to truly unlock it in apple jaw dropping fashion. (just wanted to give those tablet people hope :)

ok more...

it seems that a lot of people are thinking that this will some how replace how windows are navigated...im referring to the time machine capabilities...this is not gonna replace anything..simply thin the line even more between people and computers...making it feel less alien,... and that is apples take on things... does in fit into peoples day to day lives? its friendly and intuitive? and fun to use..?if they can't sell a feature with those criteria it will NOT be put into one of their computers.:)

ok one more...

gaming...absolutely...its a platform that is unique...not directly competing with anyone else...but that they can sell as their own...although im not confident that they will open the developer platform for the public as wide as they did for the iphone (perhaps but prolly not..)

you can bet they would make a kick butt developer platform...it would be the wii of the computer gaming world...a niche yet to be filled...and no one could fill it better than apple...have a section added to the itunes store stick with itunes and just having a new media being displayed in that window...much like i tunes LP...we might even see the apple remotes finding a whole new function, maybe even enough to package them back with the computers right out of the box.

and the kicker...connection with apple tv...so you can play these games in your living room...it would require a revamp of the apple tv...but they know they haven't gotten it right quite yet...there isnt much of a fan base to piss off...sorry apple :( they wont sell it as a game console that would be stupid...even sony and xbox are marketing there systems as media browsers...apple is just coming from the opposite direction...

it fits with all their home based hardware...apple sells their computers as a family...its better if you have more of them...this gaming platform would support a "cheap" expansion into a new industry for apple and support all of the platforms that they currently have...and it would support apple tv(they want to get into your living room...and they will offer you an unbeatable experience to get there)

Not so

A patent application does not mean that they really have been working/researching on that technology. It could just be science-fiction with a patent paper.

Actually, this isn't so. In order for the patent application to be approved, the technology must be enabled, that is, they must disclose a sufficient amount of detail such that one can use the information in the patent and prior art available at the time the patent issues and recreate the invention. If the Patent Office issues a patent that doesn't disclose all the essential details, it can be invalidated. Given the expense involved in prosecuting patent applications (as much as 100K in gees, and appearances), it is highly unlikely that Apple would file on "science fiction." I know this because I used to my firm billed my time out at $400 an hour writing and prosecuting these puppies, and that was in 1994 dollars. An application, depending on complexity, takes anywhere from 20 to 40 hours of time just to put together initially. That's 10,000 to 20,000$ just to get started in attorney's fees. This does not include filing and prosecution fees, attorney time is preparing and filing responses to Patent Office actions, nor the cost of court appeals if you are unable to get your patent issued in the two to three responses before the Office issues a Final Rejection. It can get very expensive, very quickly. So I can say with some certainty that Apple has a working system up and running. This does not necessarily mean they have a commercially exploitable system. The point of the patent is to lock in the key invention which can then be refined to make it commercially successful.

Personally, I think Apple is waiting until they have all the converging technologies available. OpenGL and a respectable performing GPU with (DRIVERS THAT WORK) is required to support a display of this type. Likewise, it needs to be 'somewhat' affordable to more than just rich folk.
